  • Guitar in Oxford Music Online
Oxford Music Online Grove Music Online Guitar article url: http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com:80/subscriber/article/grove/music/43006 Guitar (Fr. guitare; Ger. Gitarre; It. chitarra; Sp. guitarra; Port.viola; Brazilian Port. violão). A string instrument of the lute family, plucked or strummed, and normally with frets along the fingerboard. It is difficult to define precisely what features distinguish guitars from other members of the lute family, because the name ‘guitar’ has been applied to instruments exhibiting a wide variation in morphology and performing practice. The modern classical guitar has six strings, a wooden resonating chamber with incurved sidewalls and a flat back. Although its earlier history includes periods of neglect as far as art music is concerned, it has always been an instrument of popular appeal, and has become an internationally established concert instrument endowed with an increasing repertory. In the Hornbostel and Sachs classification system the guitar is a ‘composite chordophone’ of the lute type (seeLUTE, §1, andCHORDOPHONE). 1. Structure of the modern guitar. Fig.1 shows the parts of the modern classical guitar. In instruments of the highest quality these have traditionally been made of carefully selected woods: the back and sidewalls of Brazilian rosewood, the neck cedar and the fingerboard ebony; the face or table, acoustically the most important part of the instrument, is of spruce, selected for its resilience, resonance and grain (closeness of grain is considered important, and a good table will have a grain count about 5 or 6 per cm). The table and back are each composed of two symmetrical sections, as is the total circumference of the sidewalls.

A composer at the age of seven, he was refused admittance to the Paris Conservatorie because of his age so he began his formal musical training at the Madrid Conservatory. Running away from home at the age of thirteen he made his way to Costa Ria, South America, the United States, and then to England. This adventure was supported by his performances. Going to Germany in 1874 he was admitted to the Leipzig Conservatory as a pupil of Jadassohn and Reinecke. Returning to Spain he obtained a grant from Count Morphy, a high dignitary under King Alfonso XII, which enabled him to continue his studies at the Brussels Conservatoire where he studied composition with Gevaert and piano with Brassin.

  • Extending the Boundaries of Classical and Flamenco Guitar with Compositions “The 3Rd Movement”, “Your Way” and “Beyond the Triangle”
EXTENDING THE BOUNDARIES OF CLASSICAL AND FLAMENCO GUITAR WITH COMPOSITIONS “THE 3RD MOVEMENT”, “YOUR WAY” AND “BEYOND THE TRIANGLE” Amaranath Ranatunga Abstract Research Problem: Deviation from Classical Guitar music and Flamenco Guitar music towards Rock, Heavy Metal and Pop music was visible among young generation due to monotone and ridged frameworks followed by those styles. Hypothesis: Combining the Classical and Flamenco Guitar techniques with introducing extended techniques such as tapping the top board, fret board, and sides of the Guitar to produce different sounds from the tuned boards when composing music provides a new dimension which attracts young audience to Guitar music. Methodology: Author composed three compositions using extended techniques and alternatively mixing the mellow sounds of Classical Guitar and rough sounds of Flamenco Guitar and presented the compositions to the randomly selected 50 boys and girls between the age 21-27 to obtain the opinion. "The 3rd Movement visualizes the important movement of human life, by using the techniques of rapidly changing rhythm patterns which portray the reality of changing movement of daily flow of activities. Right hand 'p' finger Tremolo on open E and three-stroke rasgueados continue with the tapping on top board with thumb repeating melody note is an extended technique used in this piece to persuade more vigor to evoke feelings. In the second part, normal melody in Classical Guitar form suddenly change with rough three-stroke bresguedos ending with right hand four finger nail tapping near the 15th fret of the fret board. Two other compositions are also composed using extended techniques created by the author.

  • 75TH SEASON of CONCERTS September 15 – 18, 2016 • National Gallery of Art
75TH SEASON OF CONCERTS september 15 – 18, 2016 • national gallery of art WELCOME NGA GuitarFest It is a great pleasure to present the National Gallery of Art’s GuitarFest. The festival explores the diverse music of Spain and Latin America through the guitar, an instrument central to the culture of these areas and almost as intrinsic to the people as the Spanish language itself. In the early nineteenth century, the guitar and Spanish classical music began to take the form most recognized today, with virtuosos such as the guitarist Dionisio Aguado leading the way. Aguado’s compositions took Spanish dance music, like the fandango, and incorporated it into northern European dance forms, such as the minuet and the polonaise, which are exemplified in his Introducción y Rondo. Later in the century, composer-pianists Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados continued this tradition of celebrating Spain’s dance music, creating entire cycles to chronicle the diverse regional styles that will be heard throughout the festival. The music of both Albéniz and Granados, while composed primarily for piano, was so suggestive of guitar music that Francisco Tárrega and Miguel Llobet almost immediately arranged it for that instrument. Throughout Latin America a greater embrace of folk music emerged, while at the same time musicians continued the use of standard European forms, such as the sonata. Venezuelan Antonio Lauro (1917 – 1986) was known for his use of stylized folk songs, while simultaneously composing a much more rigid sonata. Argentinian Alberto Ginastera, Lauro’s contemporary, combined the folk song with the sonata form in his Sonata for Guitar, op.
