1 Bishop’s Letter Dear Friends, Over the last few weeks our television screens and computer newsfeeds have been full of images of the most appalling human suffering, some as a result of natural causes, others driven by fear and conditions which are so intolerable or dangerous that it has led to individuals risking their lives, and those of their families, in attempting to escape across the Mediterranean in overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels. I am humbled by the tireless efforts of aid agencies and individuals across the world who work together to relieve their suffering. It is easy to feel helpless in the face of all this heartache, to imagine that anything we could do would be so small and insignificant in the face of such large-scale problems. But that is not so. All around us, in every one of our communities, there are people who need our help – and every one of us has the ability to make a difference. God calls us to do what we can to help our neighbours and, as Christians, it should be our joyful duty to work hard to do so. I know that many of you already do so much to make a difference in your communities, helping those who are vulnerable, isolated and living in poverty, and building support networks for the young and the old. But there is always so much more to be done. And in greater Lincolnshire, more help is now available as the Diocese of Lincoln, in partnership with community organisations, has launched a £1m Social Justice Fund to provide grants to support projects that make the real difference in the lives of the people who need the most support. In the grand scheme of things, £1m is not a lot of money considering the challenge we face. The average person in the UK will earn more than £1m during the 40 years of their working life. If each of us takes up the call to help our neighbours, together we can help to build a more just society, transforming lives across greater Lincolnshire. We have an opportunity, however small, to live out our Christian discipleship and use our time, our skills and our money to support those for whom there is sometimes otherwise very little hope. Bishop Christopher

East Keal’s Pet Service – the pets are there somewhere!

The Pilgrim Course reminded me of the work of Jean-Pierre de Caussade enjoy the following and pray for those recently Confirmed. PC

“The Gospel shows in the life of Jesus Christ a succession of these truths; and this same Jesus who lives and works always, continues to live and work in the souls of His saints. If you would live according to the Gospel, abandon yourself simply and entirely to the action of God. Jesus Christ is its supreme mouthpiece. “He was yesterday, is to-day, and will be for ever.” (Hebr. xiii, 8); continuing, not recommencing His life. What He has done is finished; what remains to be done is being carried on at every moment. Each saint receives a share in this divine life, and in each, Jesus Christ is different, although the same in Himself. The life of each saint is the life of Jesus Christ; it is a new gospel.

The cheeks of the spouse are compared to beds of flowers, to gardens filled with fragrant blossoms. The divine action is the gardener, admirably arranging the flower beds. This garden resembles no other, for among all the flowers there are no two alike, or that can be described as being of the same species, except in the fidelity with which they respond to the action of the Creator, in leaving Him free to do as He pleases, and, on their side, obeying the laws imposed on them by their nature. Let God act, and let us do what He requires of us; this is the Gospel; this is the general Scripture, and the common law.”

11 ERESBY HALL NEWS

Now the better weather is on its way the residents will be able to spend time outside. Some residents were taken to the Methodist Church for the Monday coffee morning and it is hoped that the wheelchair push to the Hundleby Inn will take place in the near future.

The residents have enjoyed a fish and chip supper and a chine supper as special treats and they will be enjoying entertainment from a visiting singer.

Mrs Phylda Upex celebrated her 101st birthday at the end of April. What an amazing lady!

Members of the craft club made Union Jacks and St George's Day flags for the Quiz night held in St James Church and enjoyed doing various pictures and craft items for the notice board in the home.

Janet and Simon Enderby work very hard for Eresby Hall and the money they raise means the residents can have special treats like a chine supper, an aperitif before Sunday lunch, fruit punches at the various parties and ice cream and chocolate in addition to what the Home provides. Janet and Simon visit the Hall every Sunday lunch time to serve drinks and Janet goes round one afternoon a week serving ice cream. These additional treats are very much appreciated by the residents.

14 FAMILY SERVICE

On entering St James Church on Sunday, May 3rd for the Family service sounds of laughter could be heard as children (and adults) attempted to knock down skittles with quoits and score points on the round target area. The equipment was kindly loaned to the Church by Eresby Hall. The theme of the service was Going Round in Circles and once the service had begun the twelve children then coloured circular patterns with the help of Jane Howsam and Harriette Rowden-Jones. Crucifor for the first time was Josh Hall. A poem entitled The Circle of life was read by Angharad Faulkner. Richard Swithenbank read the first lesson from Ecclesiastes who was the son of David, King of Jerusalem, and who considered everything meaningless. Bill Rose read the second lesson from Revelation when St John saw a new heaven and a new earth.

Jane Parker and Margaret Cook talked to the children about circles seen in everyday life, sang Ring a ring of roses and asked the congregation to move round and make a huge circle by holding hands and introducing themselves to their neighbour. There was little movement as clambouring over the pews was not an option! But the activity caused smiles and laughter. During the offertory Margaret played "Windmills of your mind"

Reverend Joan Thornett, who led the service, and Jane Parker then read a poem by Peter Dainty entitled ‘The Roundabout of Life’. This poem described the world as a roundabout and the daily round making our lives more meaningful enabling us to develop a new relationship with God and joining in God's circle of love. Reverend Joan invited us "to give a joyful shout as we are here to ride on God's fantastic roundabout". Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Although it was a very wet morning it was good to see over 50 people at the service and the team were pleased to welcome visitors who were attending for the first time.

The next Family service will be on June 7th at 10.00 when the theme will be Don't judge a book by its cover.

16 It was a grey day even before I set out for Lincoln. Pouring with rain (well the gardens need it), a little bit windy (blows the cobwebs away), and generally just grey. It wasn’t a whole heap better driving home again – OK, so it wasn’t raining quite so hard – but circling in my head were all my reflections on what we had discussed at our Discipleship Team meeting – it was one of those journeys when you get to your destination without really recalling where you have been.

But then, driving from through to Revesby, suddenly the sun came out. Turning a corner, there was a vibrancy in the different greens of the bushes and trees, and a sparkle in the blue of the sky. It was as if the whole world had been washed clean – and I just had to stop the car and marvel at the difference.

But then I had to get back into the car and drive home to the work which was piled on my desk (including this article)!

It was a small glimpse of something wonderful in the busyness of daily life. Sometimes these glimpses which give us a fresh outlook on life seem few and far between, but I wonder if that is because we are not looking for them. As part of the Discipleship Programme, we encourage Parishes and individuals to take a step back and look with fresh eyes at what they are doing, and how it fits within the mission of the church. Sometimes the reflections seem grey – ‘we do what we do because we have always done it’. Sometimes there is a kaleidoscope of bright ideas with little pattern or focus. God’s abundance brings colour and grey – freshness and tradition, growth and maturity, inspiration and calm. We can learn to work with both. Rev’d Fran

18 All You Need Is Love (Beatles all the way!)

I know it is a week or two ago now, but if you saw, heard or read anything to do with the V.E Day 70th Celebrations, I shall be very surprised if you tell me you were not moved by something or someone. I do not think it can be emphasised enough how much we owe those incredible people. They tell us, nearly as one, that they were only doing what anyone would have done. Incredible, in tears more than once as I listened to their stories and watched as they laid wreaths at war memorials. What, I wondered, have we actually learnt? Surely we must have learnt something? Surely we all now know the futility of war and hostility? Surely it can never ever happen again?

Jesus told his disciples, commanded his disciples to love one another: This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has a greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. John 15.

Jesus commanded us to love one another, do we? He said no one has a greater love than to lay down their life for their friends. Would we? He said we are his friends if we do as he commanded. We cannot fail then, can we? He told us he has made known everything that he heard from his Father. So we have no problems, have we? Jesus Christ told us, showed us, how to be and to live with one another. Many thousands of people gave their lives for our freedom, for the freedom to choose and to believe Jesus Christ. Surely we have heard and are determined to obey? Surely to goodness, everyday sees us striving in some tiny way to ensure people know how to love one another? Jesus called each and every one of us, we have no excuses. You and I are called to love one another, we may not be asked to sacrifice our lives, but we are commanded to love each other. Our families, our homes, our friends, our communities, our world, all will be enriched if we actually strive to keep this commandment. As we thank God for the gift of his son and for all those incredibly selfless people who gave us our freedom, I pray we can all heed Christ’s command and try to obey.

Spilsby Surgery PPG Newsletter May 2015

Spilsby Surgery Appointment Bookings

Regular Appointment Bookings All the regular weekday Surgeries are by appointment only. Please see the receptionist or telephone between 8.30am and 6.30pm on 01790 378005 to arrange an appointment to see the doctor or nurse. You can also book an appointment via the telephone system (01790 378005, Option 1) or online through the Surgery website (registration is required). If you think your appointment will take an unusually long time please inform the receptionist so that she can make allowances for this. Additional appointments are offered on a Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. These appointments MUST be booked in advance as the surgery building will not be open to the public and telephone access will not be available during these times.

Urgent Appointments – Duty Doctor/Advanced Nurse Practitioner The Surgery operates a telephone triage service to deal with urgent requests of a clinical nature to consult with the doctor or advanced nurse practitioner. If your request is urgent call the surgery and make a request to be put on the duty doctor’s list for a call back. The receptionist will take your name and telephone number and may ask you for a brief summary of your condition and the duty doctor will call you back as soon as possible. If they think that you need to be seen you will usually be offered an appointment that day. The triage service is not available during the additional appointment times of Tuesday or Wednesday evening or Saturday mornings as mentioned above. Sometimes patients are not comfortable telling the receptionist about their condition. However, it allows the duty doctor to triage the most critical cases that day. Also remember that the receptionists are bound by confidentiality and the Data Protection Act so your personal information remains confidential.

Cancellation of Appointments If you are unable to keep your appointment please let the surgery know as soon as possible so that they can allocate it to someone else. Every year more than 1000 appointments are not used because patients fail to attend. This prevents other patients from accessing an appointment that would otherwise be available. You can also cancel your appointment outside of working hours by calling 01790 378005 and choose option 1. The facility to cancel appointments is also available online. The Surgery operates a text messaging service for appointments so remember to let the Surgery know if you change your mobile number.

St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice in your community… A most enjoyable morning was had by all at the recent Coffee Morning organised by Pat & Alan Brumpton and Mavis & Albert Maw in Village Hall. This is the third annual Coffee Morning organised by the two families and was once again a huge success raising over £600.

Pat & Alan's daughter Michelle and family were cared for by St Barnabas nurses before Michelle passed away with cancer in 2012. The family are extremely grateful to St Barnabas for the wonderful care and help they all received and organise this event to support the continuing work of the Hospice. Over the last three years their Coffee Mornings have raised almost £1900 which is fantastic and very much appreciated. My sincere thanks to all who organised, came along, made cakes and donated raffle prizes etc!

I recently attended one of the very popular Tea Dances held in Louth Town Hall; which this year are supporting St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice in the care and services we provide to patients and their families across the area from the Louth Hospice. My thanks to Marjorie Barnes and friends who organise these Tea Dances and the wonderful volunteers who come along and help St Barnabas in delivering the catering element of the event. Come along and enjoy a wonderful afternoon with friends at the next Tea Dance… Louth Town Hall, Thursday 11th June. Doors open 1.30pm, Dancing 2.30-4.30pm Tickets £6 from Louth Town Hall, Eve & Ranshaw, Louth or call 01507 602031

Our first ever `Paws 4 A Cause’ sponsored dog walk in Horncastle was a great success seeing dogs and their owners enjoy a Sunday morning stroll along the beautiful Spa Trail, whilst at the same time raising over £550 to support the delivery of our Hospice community services in the East Lindsey area. Many thanks to all involved, we look forward to seeing you again next year!

A reminder… tickets are available now for our ever popular Ladies Lunch at Kenwick Park Hotel on Tuesday 23rd June. As well as enjoying a delicious two course lunch, the event presents a fantastic shopping opportunity with beautiful local craft and gift stalls. Lunch will be followed by our wonderful guest speaker; Dr Paul Whittaker OBE as he talks about his life as a deaf musician, the work of “Music and the Deaf” along with some piano music and signed song. Tickets in advance only £22.50
