    Panentheism and Panexperientialism for Open and Relational Theology Thomas Jay Oord and Wm. Andrew Schwartz Open and relational theologies have a particular affinity for panentheism and panexperientialism (panpsychism). These theologies come in various forms, however. And scholars propose various forms of panentheism and panexperi- entialism. Diversity reigns. We begin this essay by describing open and relational theology. We also describe panentheism and panexperientialism, broadly understood. We note reasons why open and relational theists would be attracted to each. And we argue that panentheism and panexperientialism complement one another, al- though a person could be attracted only to one. Much of the essay argues for one form of open and relational theology we think makes the best sense overall. This form includes belief in a personal/ relational God, makes distinctions between God and creatures, affirms God ev- erlastingly creates (thereby denying creatio ex nihilo), and offers a solution to the theoretical aspect of the problem of evil. Adopting panexperientialism and panentheism offers ways to overcome theoretical problems in contemporary thought, while arguably motivating adherents of the view to love (promote overall well-being). 1. Open and Relational Theology The label »open and relational theology« serves as an umbrella designation for a family of theologies.1 This family shares at least two core convictions. The »open« aspect refers to the idea that both creatures and God experience the ongoingness of time. Consequently, both God and creatures face an open, yet to be determined future.     RELATIONAL HOLINESS: CORE AND CONTRIBUTING NOTIONS Thomas Jay Oord and Michael Lodahl* The classical terms of holiness – “Christian Perfection,” “Entire Sanctification,” “The Second Blessing,” and “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” – no longer seize the imaginations of many people. Evidence of this is found chiefly in the fact that Christian leaders both inside and outside the holiness tradition rarely use these terms today. Lay people use them even less. Perhaps we in the holiness tradition are becoming like the Myanmar pygmies. At the turn of the 21st century, conservationist Alan Rabinowitz set out to explore the remote mountain regions of Myanmar. Prior to 1989, this relatively unexplored nation was known as Burma. Rabinowitz wanted to document species of indigenous animals largely unknown to the outside world. Myanmar officials supported the venture, because they knew little about the plants, animals, and even some people living in the isolated mountains areas. Prior to setting out on the excursion, Rabinowitz happened across long forgotten reports on the region written in the late 1950s and early 60s. These reports mentioned a tribe of approximately one hundred pygmies living in the Myanmar mountains. This tribe apparently contained the world’s only pygmies of Asian ancestry. Rabinowitz realized that since the writing of these reports nearly four decades earlier, no one from outside the region had documented the state of this hidden and peculiar tribe. After searching the deep mountain valleys for some time, Rabinowitz found the pygmy people. He regretted to discover, however, that only about a dozen of these dwarfish humans still existed. The genetic lineage of only three remained pure, and these three had decided not to marry.

The early W esleyans sought to renew the church and to spread scriptural holiness throughout the land. The Holiness movement desired to make holiness of heart and life a living reality in the lives of Christians and the motivation of a vast evangelistic and social mission. Pentecostals proclaimed the full gospel in the power of the Spirit as both a warning to the church and a witness to the nations of the coming of the Lord. Charismatics sought to reappropriate the charisms of the Spirit in order to renew the church and its mission. In one way or another their essential contribution to the Christian movement was to renew the life of the church and enable it to engage in mission to the world. But they also faced crucial choices. As these movements grew, they were continually tempted to compromise the vision of renewal and mission, yet also presented with opportunities to faithfully revision their theology and practice for new contexts. What contributions can these movements make to the church and the world as we enter a new century? What crucial choices do they face? Is there something vitally essential to God's mission in the world and to the life of the church that these movements can and must contribute? There are a multitude of ways this theme might be addressed: • Early participants in these movements were passionately committed to renewal and mission.

    FILIAL LOVE IN THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE Dr. Erik Groeneveld, senior pastor Purmerend Church of the Nazarene the Netherlands In his contribution to Didache 14:1, John Bechtold states that historically and foundationally the Church of the Nazarene placed filial love above the possibility of univocal doctrinal development. The focus needs to be on cooperation rather than on agreement.1 The goal of this article is to support that view and to elaborate on it from a theological and ecclesiological perspective. I will argue that the Church of the Nazarene needs to have mechanisms in place to involve lay members in decision-making processes since filial love, or cooperation, is an expression of relational holiness.2 Wesleyan holiness theology is a theology of love Like other theologies of love, a Wesleyan theology of love is based on the biblical revelation of a God whose essential nature is that of holy love.3 Biblical passages such as Leviticus 19 or Matthew 5-7 underscore both the relational character of Christianity and the centrality of love. Based on these texts, Nathan Crawford argues that what makes a Wesleyan theology distinctive is that the starting point is not a specific doctrine or method, but rather a disposition and way of being: ‘This disposition is one of love, both love of God and love of neighbour. [It is] a hermeneutic of love that begins from the place of both loving and being loved; this becomes the beginning point of any theology that marks itself as Wesleyan.’4 In a similar way, Wesleyan scholar Kenneth Collins states: Faith, then, as great as it is, is not seated on the throne, and in one sense it will pass away in the world to come.
