Email:[email protected]. sch.uk School Profile John Paul Academy is a coeducational Catholic comprehensive school covering the stages S1 to S6. It serves the north west of Glasgow and the towns of and in East Dunbartonshire.

The school had a roll of 914 at the start of 2017/2018.

The school is housed in a comfortable modern building on the edge of the development with an open outlook beyond the school playing fields to the north. Special features of the school include an upgraded and redesigned multipurpose hall, theatre and social area, new ICT suites, a modern library with full ICT facilities, a redesigned Art department and Home Economics department, a state of the art sports complex incorporating a modern fitness suite and 3G surfaced, floodlit playing field, hairdressing salon and upgraded facilities throughout the school.

All classrooms have been refurbished and modernised.

The school has a lift for use by pupils with physical disability, staff and visitors. The games hall, gymnasium and playing fields are used extensively in the evenings and at weekends, and other school facilities are used by different community groups.

John Paul Academy was opened in 1982 and named in honour of Pope John Paul II who visited Scotland in that year.

We aim to both support and challenge our pupils to ensure that they each develop their own talents to the full while ensuring that we all work together in a spirit of partnership and care.

The involvement of pupils and staff in activities outwith the normal classroom is seen as extremely important for the development of the pupils by allowing them to pursue their interests with pupils from different classes and by encouraging them to form good relationships with their teachers in a setting different from that of the usual school routine. There is an extensive programme of activities within and outwith the school day from which the pupils can chose.

Football, badminton, athletics, cross-country, skiing, drama, orchestra, dance, cheerleading, golf, DJ skills, first aid, science, cookery, music making and crafts have all been offered.

In addition pupils are given the opportunity to become involved in a number of other activities in the course of their working year, to promote citizenship and enterprise as well as work experience, work shadowing and community links to prepare for life beyond school. Trips to France, Spain, Italy and London have been organised in recent years.

During the course of the year many of our pupils take part in a number of competitive events with other schools, notably in music festivals, athletic championships, the Art Galleries competition, and various technology and essay competitions.

The pupils are involved every year in a major fundraising initiative to assist a number of specially selected charities as well as Mary’s Meals. Both pupils and staff support a pastoral programme to enliven the links between the school and associated parishes and to foster the liturgical life of the school.

John Paul Academy is a part of the John Paul Learning Community. The other partners are:

St Blane’s Primary, St Mary’s Primary, St Charles’ Primary, St Joseph’s Primary St Charles’ Speech & Language Unit, St Joseph’s Hearing Impairment Unit, Langa Street Nursery and Park Nursery
