4 The Collect of the Day

celebrant: The Lord be with you people: And also with you celebrant: Let us pray. Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. people: Amen. The Lessons Please be seated. reader: A reading from the prophet Jeremiah Jeremiah 33:12–26

12 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: In this place that is waste, without man or beast, and in all of its cities, there shall again be habitations of shepherds 13 resting their flocks. In the cities of the hill country, in the cities of the Shep- helah, and in the cities of the Negeb, in the land of Benjamin, the places about , and in the cities of , flocks shall again pass under the hands of the one who counts them, says the Lord.

14 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise 15 I made to the house of and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for , and he shall 16 execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

17 “For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of 18 the house of Israel, and the Levitical priests shall never lack a man in my presence to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to make sacrifices forever.”

19 20 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day 21 and night will not come at their appointed time, then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his 22 throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered and the sands of the sea cannot be measured, so I will multiply the offspring of David my servant, and the Levitical priests who minister to me.” 5 23 24 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “Have you not observed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two clans that he chose’? Thus they 25 have despised my people so that they are no longer a nation in their sight. Thus says the Lord: If I have not established my covenant with day and night and the 26 fixed order of heaven and earth, then I will reject the offspring of and David my servant and will not choose one of his offspring to rule over the off- spring of , Isaac, and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and will have mercy on them.”

reader: The word of the Lord.

people: Thanks be to God.

Please stand for the Gospel reading. Alleluia

deacon: The holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew

people: Glory to You, Lord Christ. Matthew 14:22–33

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to 23 the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening 24 came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from 25 the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the 26 fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is 27 a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you 29 on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on 30 the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, 31 and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little 32 faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind 33 ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

“The Return of the Shepherd-King” — Fr. Trevor McMaken, City of Light Anglican The Creed

people: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and was born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontious Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

7 The Confession of Sin

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen
