College Calendar • Mission Statement • History of Houghton College Philosophy Houghton College, an educational institution of the Wesleyan Church, seeks to prepare “scholar servants” for effective engagement with the rapidly changing world of the 21st century. As “scholars,” students are trained in the theoretical knowledge of their field but also in how to apply that knowledge to practical circumstances in this country and around the world. As “servants,” they are inspired to steward their gifts humbly and graciously in the name of Jesus Christ in whatever circumstances God calls them to serve. To be prepared to serve effectively, a Houghton graduate must develop effective skills in listening, reading, written and spoken communication, computation, problem solving, logical reasoning, and value discrimination. In addition, the graduate’s cumulative knowledge must provide a solid foundation for lifelong learning through a thorough grounding in one or more academic disciplines in addition to familiarity with fundamental concepts, principles and methods of the basic fields of knowledge. Learning must also relate disciplines to one another and to life in ways that assist in making wise decisions
