DATE OF ACCESSION September 1982 November 1984 PROVENANCE Colm Gavan Duffy ACCESS Open 2 This collection was received in three parts which accounts for three fronting pages within this list. The three parts have kept separate and no attempt has been made to move items from one section to another. This collection of personal papers is of paramount importance for those wishing to understand political development s within Ireland and concerning Ireland from the periods 1918–1922. 3 ACCESSION NO. 1125 DESCRIPTION Correspondence, secret memoranda and reports received by George Gavan Duffy at the Delegation of elected representatives of the Irish Republic while in Paris and Rome. 1918–1921 DATE OF ACCESSION September 1982 PROVENANCE Colm Gavan Duffy ACCESS Open 4 This collection was presented to the Public Record Office in two ring binders. As no order, other than a rough chronological one, was apparent within the binders the material was separated and placed in new classifications. This has ensured that, as far as is possible, incomplete letters separated within the binders have now been joined together. For this reason it was impossible to believe that the order was original or the work of George Gavan Duffy himself.

Member of Supreme Council of I.R.B. 1916. Subject. The Countermanding Orders of Holy Week, 1916. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil File No. S.3o Form B.S.M.2 The Countermanding Orders of Holy Week, 1916. The attached eight-page printed document entitled: "The Countermanding Orders of Holy Week 1916" by Diarmuid Lynch is a printer's proof. The article was written, by Diarmuid Lynch early in 1947 for publication in An Cosantoir. It was, it the first instance, submitted by the Editor of An Cosantoir to Mr. Bulmer Hobson for his comments. Mr. Hobson, who was intimately connected with the incidents covered by the article, and whose name is frequently mentioned therein, replied to the effect that "statements about myself and about certain other matters just do not happen to be true". In view of all the cicumstances, the Editor decided to postpone publication of the article and forwarded copies of it together with Mr. Hobson's original letter to the Bureau for inclusion in our archives.     Estella Solomons: a Portrait of the Artist As a Republican

    CULTURE Estella Solomons: A portrait of the artist as a Republican Painter concealed ammunition in her studio, writes Róisín Kennedy STELLA SOLOMONS came from a prominent Jewish Dublin family. Her E father, Maurice, was a well-known optician and his practice on Nassau Street is mentioned in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Solomons trained at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where Willie Pearse had also been a student. Her contemporary at the school, Beatrice Elvery remembered that ‘it was difficult not to be swept away in a flood of patriotism’. Solomons continued her studies at the Chelsea School of Art in London and at Colorossi’s Studio in Paris where she was accompanied by Elvery and Cissie Beckett, aunt of the future writer Samuel Beckett. A visit to a major exhibition of the work Estella Solomons’ portraits of Erskine Childers and Sinn Féin activist Darrell Figgis, and a self-portrait. of Rembrandt in Amsterdam in 1906 had a decisive impact on one of Seán Milroy, a frequent back in Limerick, discovered that in this endeavour by Kathleen her art practice.     The 1916 Rising and County Wexford Introduction The 1916 Rising and County Wexford pack is an introduction to County Wexford’s contribution to the uprising of that year. It offers information on many aspects: causes and context, a timeline of events, the aftermath, profiles of some local leaders, the role of women, and arts and literature inspired by the Rising, among others. Extracts from original documents of the period - letters, newspaper accounts, and witness statements are included. The selection provides a flavour of life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Ireland and in County Wexford. It is intended to encourage and enable students to embark on further study. The pack includes references for all sources quoted and offers guidance to sources and resources for further research. The 1916 Rising and County Wexford pack cannot and does not attempt to tell the story of the Rising in its entirety. Rather, it introduces the reader to the wealth of information available in primary sources - an essential starting point for all reliable research- and in books, websites and other e-sources. The pack focuses in particular on local supports - the materials in the Wexford Studies Collections located on the top floor of the County Library in Mallin St., Wexford town, and in the Wexford County Archive collections in Ardcavan, Wexford. While every effort is made here to offer as current a resource as possible, you are directed also to the Council’s website for the 2016 Commemorations, www.enniscorthy1916.ie which will be updated beyond the print date of this publication.

    Dorothy Macardle: ‘The Irish Republic’ author who was much more than de Valera’s propagandist Dorothy Macardle was much more than de Valera's mouthpiece: she was a politically persuasive and stoically independent woman, writes Leeann Lane, the author of a new biography Dorothy Macardle is best known for writing the first full-scale account of the Irish revolutionary period from an anti-Treaty viewpoint, The Irish Republic (1937). She is also known now, to an increasing extent, for the Gothic fiction she produced in the 1940s and early 1950s as a result of the republication of same by Tramp Press. A teacher, a playwright, a novelist and a political propagandist, Macardle was a multifaceted woman who has remained too often below the radar of historical recognition. Commissioned by Éamon de Valera, The Irish Republic established Macardle as one of the key Irish political propagandists of her era. However, it would be reductive and historically inaccurate to conflate Macardle's political viewpoints with those of de Valera or to view her as someone who docilely served his political desire to legitimise his stance on the Treaty. While Macardle's political relationship with de Valera was one she valued and maintained throughout her life, she was not merely a subsidiary or helpmate to him; she was a strong and principled woman never afraid to assert her point of view. By considering her political thought purely through the prism of de Valera, the paradigm of women in a supportive rather than proactive role in the history of the Irish revolution, and the state that formed in its wake, is reinforced yet again.
