Two boys placed in top 1% in SA; Kearsney average mark: 75%; Physical Sciences: 37% of boys achieved distinctions (IEB schools’ ave: 12.9%). Seven boys in top 48 in SA. 60% of Kearsney boys wrote Physical Sciences and the average mark was 71%; Engineering Graphics & Design: 52% achieved distinctions. Top eight candidates in SA. Cultural The Kearsney College Choir won 3 Gold Medals and World Champion status at the 2014 World Choir Games in Latvia. The World Choir Games is the biggest choir competition in the world, attracting 27 000 participants in 460 choirs from 73 nations in 2014. The Kearsney College Choir, with 13 Gold medals and 6 silver medals, is the second-most decorated Choir in the history of the Games. The Choir is currently ranked 8th in the world overall. The definitive version is available at: http://www.africanstudies.uct.ac.za/downloads/29_1farquharson.zip Transforming the Springboks: Re-imagining the South African Nation through Sport 1 Karen Farquharson and Timothy Marjoribanks Abstract Nation-building occurs not only through the creation of formal institutions, but also through struggles in cultural and symbolic contexts. In apartheid South Africa, the rugby union Springboks both symbolised and institutionalised a racially based form of ‘bounded citizenship’. In post-apartheid South Africa, the Springboks have emerged as a contested and significant site in the attempt to build a non-racial nation through reconciliation. To explore these contests, we undertook a qualitative thematic analysis of newspaper discourses around the Springboks, reconciliation and nation-building in the contexts of the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups. Our research suggests, first, that the Springboks have been re-imagined in newspaper discourses as a symbol of the non-racial nation-building process in South Africa, especially in ‘media events’ such as the World Cup. Second, we find that there are significant limitations in translating this symbolism into institutionalised practice, as exemplified by newspaper debates over the place of ‘merit’ in international team selection processes. We conclude that the media framing of the role of the Springboks in nation-building indicates that unless the re-imagination of the Springboks is accompanied by a transformation in who is selected to represent the team, and symbolically the nation, the Springboks’ contribution to South African nation-building will be over.

It critically engages with the “South African Surfing History Archive”, collected in the course of research, by focusing on two inter-related themes in contributing to a critical sports historiography in southern Africa. The first is how surfing in South Africa has come to be considered a white, male sport. The second is whether surfing is political. In addressing these topics the study considers the double whiteness of the Californian influences that shaped local surfing culture at “whites only” beaches during apartheid. The racialised nature of the sport can be found in the emergence of an amateur national surfing association in the mid-1960s and consolidated during the professionalisation of the sport in the mid-1970s.

    Sport Awards 2015 Foreword The annual Sports Awards is a highlight of the Western Cape Government’s calendar. The Awards recognise and officially acknowledge the esteemed excellence of sportspeople hailing from the Western Cape. Today, we pay tribute to the exemplary role these individuals have played in the development of sport and motivating others to achieve more. I wholeheartedly thank each sportsperson awarded their prestigious acknowledgement for serving as a beacon of hope to all in the Western Cape. Their perseverance, focus and positive choices have groomed them into significant role-models to whom youth can aspire. Excellence in their respective sporting codes requires dedication, motivation and many hours of practice, but also most importantly support and encouragement from significant others: family, friends, coaches, managers and others. Heartfelt gratitude is expressed to them for their continuous support and encouragement toward our sporting success.
