ACADEMICIAN NICOLAE CAJAL SYMPOSIUM – 5TH EDITION TRANSLATIONAL ONCOLOGY, CELL THERAPY, BUCHAREST, APRIL 14–16, 2010 36 Translational Oncology Session Academician Nicolae Cajal Symposium 37 FOREWORD Professor Nicolae Cajal (1919–2004) is considered between the founders of a new Romanian scientific school, a research institute of the Romanian Academy called the “St. Nicolau” Institute of Virology. Many renowned physicians, pioneers of national medical specialties, have been educated in this Institute or in the Chair of Virology at the Bucharest University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Among Cajal’s most significant scientific contributions we will cite only a few, such as production and application of viral vaccines against poliomyelitis, influenza, and measles; important research programs in the domain of significant viral diseases as: AIDS, viral hepatitis, acute and chronic viral neuroinfections; the implication of certain viruses in oncogenesis and others. Cajal set high standards for him and other and shaped the field by training many young virologists all over the country and abroad. His experience indicates that successful projects adopt multidisciplinary approaches. Many of Cajal’s students and their second-, and third- “descendants” are still major contributors to the field of virology, vaccinology and cell biology. In the last years Cajal Foundation created by his daughter, Irina Cajal, organized annual scientific sympozia that have been attended by scientists in microbiology, biochemistry, informatics etc. as well as practitioners in the field of infectious diseases and epidemiolgy. This year symposium hosted three sessions: virology, genomics and translational oncology. 38 Translational Oncology Session TRANSLATIONAL ONCOLOGY SESSION DEFA-1, DEFA-5, DEFA-6, IL-8, CXCL-1, SPP-1, CTHRC-1), identified as up-regulated by microarray, in adenoma and tumoral samples FROM BENCH TO BEDSIDE: compared with matched normal tissues.

  • THE DISCOVERY of INSULIN and NICOLAE PAULESCU
1 THE DISCOVERY OF INSULIN and NICOLAE PAULESCU F. I. Dworschak 2 : I have tried not to be offensive and you may think I have been too mild, but I know that any criticism of the Toronto workers will be regarded as almost sacrilegious in certain quarters.” Ian Murray to I. Pavel, 4 April 1970 “He (Paulescu) was the first to describe the actions of what was later called insulin and demonstrated clearly that it was a hormone with actions on all aspects of metabolism”. Sir George Al berti December 2001 3 INTRODUCTION This essay will re-examine the contributions to insulin research and other areas of Medicine and Physiology by Nicolae Constantin Paulescu and account for his relative lack of recognition in English language historiography. 1 One important reason was that he wrote and published exclusively in French. He also had little access to English language medical publications, likely because he could not afford them (see his unanswered letter to Banting dated 5 February 1923). As such, he was out of touch with the rapid advances in diabetes research in the Anglo-Saxon medical literature, relying exclusively on French sources. Starting in 1922 this became fatal, he was left behind and his contributions, meager at this stage also due to financial problems, became almost irrelevant. This is in marked contrast to the previous years (1920-1921) when one could rightly say that he was the leading researcher investigating the whole range of physiological properties of the “inner secretion” of the pancreas that eventually would be known as insulin. Viewed from this angle he should be considered the discoverer of insulin as a hormone affecting practically all aspects of the metabolism.

FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. DISTORTION, NEGATIONISM, AND MINIMALIZATION OF THE HOLOCAUST IN POSTWAR ROMANIA Introduction This chapter reviews and analyzes the different forms of Holocaust distortion, denial, and minimalization in post-World War II Romania. It must be emphasized from the start that the analysis is based on the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s definition of the Holocaust, which Commission members accepted as authoritative soon after the Commission was established. This definition1 does not leave room for doubt about the state-organized participation of Romania in the genocide against the Jews, since during the Second World War, Romania was among those allies and a collaborators of Nazi Germany that had a systematic plan for the persecution and annihilation of the Jewish population living on territories under their unmitigated control. In Romania’s specific case, an additional “target-population” subjected to or destined for genocide was the Romany minority. This chapter will employ an adequate conceptualization, using both updated recent studies on the Holocaust in general and new interpretations concerning this genocide in particular. Insofar as the employed conceptualization is concerned, two terminological clarifications are in order. First, “distortion” refers to attempts to use historical research on the dimensions and significance of the Holocaust either to diminish its significance or to serve political and propagandistic purposes. Although its use is not strictly confined to the Communist era, the term “distortion” is generally employed in reference to that period, during which historical research was completely subjected to controls by the Communist Party’s political censorship.

Forth- with, we present two patients with congenital IGF-I deficiency who developed type II diabetes and subsequently retinopathy. Methods: Eighteen adult patients with classical Laron syndrome (8 males, 10 females, aged 20–62 years) were followed by us since childhood or underwent fundus photography with a Nikon NF 505 instrument. Three had been treated in childhood with IGF-I, the rest were never treated, includ- ing the two patients reported. Results: Two never-treated patients were diagnosed with type II diabetes (DM) at ages 39 and 41 respectively. There was no diabetes in the families. Oral treatment was followed by insulin injections. Metabolic control was not optimal and one patient developed proliferative diabetic retinopathy, neces- sitating laser surgery. He also has nephropathy and severe neuropathy.
