ANNUAL REPORT 2018 Message from our CEO Dear Friends, “Vision is seeing something before you see it, so that you can actually see it” (author: unknown). The aforementioned quote not only reflects a powerfully insightful message, it also represents just how relevant it is to what we’ve experienced over the past year at Mariners Inn. We officially embarked on a journey to expand our mission and services in a way that will continue to successfully address the needs of the vulnerable target population that are seeking support to combat the disease of addiction and homelessness. We continue to be blessed beyond measure, because there is no greater feeling than helping to save lives. We recognize that our fortunate position to be able to do so would not be possible without the unwavering support of the community, our friends, donors and stakeholders. It is tremendously challenging for nonprofits in the human service arena to secure the type of fiduciary support that will contribute to the long-term general operating needs of organizations like ours. While that factual premise is supported by the data related to agencies providing services to those in need of help to regain their dignity and respect, it’s not a barrier to our success. We remain steadfastly committed to providing the type of services, resources, compassionate professionalism, expertise and love to the people we serve with a desired outcome of them returning to their families and the community clean, sober and ready to confidently embrace the future. Thank you for believing in us and our mission. More importantly, thank you for helping us return men to their families and the community clean and sober. Finally, I implore you to visit us and/or our website to witness, first hand, why we passionately serve our mission. We believe, with everything we do and say, that Recovery is Real…and Begins at Mariners Inn! David Sampson, LMSW Chief Executive Officer Recovery is Real ... and Begins Here Mariners Inn serves as an anchor for those struggling to navigate the treacherous waters of homelessness and substance abuse through a wide range of social service programs that achieve the best possible outcomes for adults, families and youth affected by addiction. Programs • Residential Treatment • Recovery Housing • Strengthening Families • Residential Youth Prevention • Alumni and Outreach • Alcohol & Highway Safety • Outpatient Treatment • Mariners Extended Residency (MER) • Peer Mentoring • Social Enterprise • Strong, Healthy, Empowered (SHE) Accreditation Our treatment program is certified by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) at the most prestigious three-year level. We are also licensed to provide residential, outpatient, and integrated treatment by the Michigan Department of Community Health. Celebrating Recovery “You have to go through the struggle in order to get to the success.” -Scott, Mariners Inn Alumnus Scott is a well-known face in the Mariners Community. This could be perceived as a negative, but the truth is quite the opposite. “This nest was everything I needed and could hope for,” says Scott. After graduating from the program for his second time, he knew that he could not continue the life he was living. It took bottoming out, pure exhaustion, paranoia, and a feeling of being fiendish before Scott realized that he could not do this by himself. The key to his continued success, fellowship. “You have to take part in the program, stick with it, and keep trying. Support systems and accountability are important,” says Scott. He describes Narcotics Anonymous as a place where you can not only learn awareness and how to listen to your feelings, but how not to let them affect you in a negative way as well. “Sobriety feels weird for an addict, but it feels a lot better than using drugs.” Through total surrender and a willingness to change his way of thinking, Scott now chooses every day to be exactly who he is. “I show up, do work, and get something from it.” We are proud to report that not only did Scott graduate from college after starting his recovery, but he did so with a 3.86 grade point average. He continues to develop his skills in videography and production, while also working at Mariners Inn five days a week. If we could end Scott’s story of success, we would have to do so with one word that he recommends be practiced daily, gratitude. -Written by Austin Essique 2018 By The Numbers In 2018, Residential Substance Abuse Treatment … Served an average of 71 men daily Placed 12 men in permanent housing Placed 192 men in transitional housing Served a total of 857 men In 2018, Recovery Housing (RH) … 73 men completed the program Served a total of 199 men In 2018, Extended Residency Housing (MER) … Placed 4 men in permanent housing Served a total of 30 men In 2018, Strengthening Families … Served 115 families Served a total of 137 adults, 33 teens, and 146 children In 2018, Alumni & Outreach Services … Served a total of 600 individuals In 2018, Alcohol & Highway Safety… Served a total of 22 individuals In 2018, Residential Youth Prevention (RYPP) … Served a total of 124 individuals In 2018, Strong Healthy Empowered (SHE) … Served a total of 16 individuals In 2018, Social Enterprise (SEP) … Oriented 33 clients Completed 86 jobs & 159 parking events Found 16 clients permanent employment Thank You to Our 2017-2018 Donors!
