Ho deciso di lavorare sui testi di Jünger scegliendo, analizzando e citando quegli scritti che risultavano particolarmente di rilievo nel contraltare tecnica- nostalgia. Il lavoro si divide in due parti. Nella prima seguo principalmente il percorso filosofico di Jünger sulla questione della tecnica e lo sviluppo anche grazie al costante confronto con alcuni pensatori tedeschi che hanno vissuto il disagio della modernità. Poi tento di mappare i luoghi letterari jüngeriani oscillanti tra tecnica e nostalgia, raggruppandoli – nella seconda parte – in una sorta di atlante. Ne emerge una geofilosofia dei topoi che Jünger sceglie per fuggire l’accelerazione, la mobilitazione massiva nata sotto l’insegna del lavoro e la dilagante tecnicizzazione e trasformazione del mondo. Ho potuto delineare, attraverso questo percorso, lo stato d’animo scelto come trasporto verso un tempo e uno spazio diversi da quelli offerti nel panorama del mondo mutato della tecnica, come una spinta opposta al lineare avanzare del progresso. La premessa al lavoro è relativa a una breve sintesi della ricezione di Jünger in Italia. Un chiarimento in questo ambito – che avviene accennando alcune delle principali posizioni critiche – è necessario se si pensa che alcune interpretazioni legate a rigide schematizzazioni, hanno a lungo condizionato la diffusione e la circolazione della produzione di Jünger in Italia. Nonostante la sua “riabilitazione” avvenuta durante gli anni Settanta, molti interpreti anche contemporanei tendono a leggere il dopo-operaio come un arenarsi nella perdita della carica spirituale esponenzialmente affievolitasi con il passare del tempo, come uno spiaggiamento in una produzione fiacca, un’estetica letteraria dai contenuti aridi. Altra è la matrice interpretativa che ha indirizzato questa ricerca. Diversi studiosi contemporanei si sono infatti interessati notevolmente anche alla produzione successiva a L’operaio [Der Arbeiter, 1932], tracciando fertili sentieri ancora poco battuti e ampliando la critica sul pensiero di Ernst Jünger. Considerato questo, la mia ricerca si apre tracciando una cornice biografica che cerca di mettere in luce l’epoca in cui Jünger si forma, focalizzando l’attenzione sulla sua adesione al movimento culturale della Konservative Revolution1. L’aspetto conservatore e quello rivoluzionario, emblematici del movimento konservative-revolutionäre che viene analizzato come contenitore del disagio della modernità della Germania weimariana, faranno sempre parte della personalità di Jünger come insanabili tensioni e contraddizioni riscontrabili in tutta la sua produzione letteraria. Per questo ad alcuni capitoli è stato dato un titolo “ossimorico”, valorizzando le coppie oppositive che contraddistinguono i relativi contenuti dei paragrafi sviluppati e cercando al contempo di trasmettere al lettore il profondo senso di frattura interna dell’autore stesso. Lo stesso titolo generale del lavoro: Tecnica e Nostalgia vuole sottolineare che l’argomento che ci si appresta ad affrontare verterà su due elementi in tensione. L’indagine vera e propria si dispiega a partire dagli anni Trenta, un’epoca emblematicamente definita della mobilitazione totale. Tale definizione è anche il titolo di un saggio di Jünger La mobilitazione totale [Die totale Mobilmachung, 1930], panoramica di quel tempo che ha indotto il massimo dispiegamento delle forze umane sotto il segno della produzione e del lavoro e che funziona come sfondo imprescindibile e formulazione preliminare alla sua opera più conosciuta, L’operaio. Lo scritto al quale in questa sintesi si accenna soltanto, è estremamente eterogeneo ed è stato letto criticamente analizzando i diversi livelli testuali riscontrabili al suo interno: politico, sociale, filosofico, estetico, visionario e profetico. 1 I principali riferimenti critici sulla Rivoluzione conservatrice consultati sono stati: S. In questo senso il lavoratore mobilita il mondo ricorrendo alla tecnica, la quale non rappresenta solo il simbolo della figura de L’Operaio ma anche, e soprattutto, la maniera con cui questa figura mobilita il mondo. L’impero tecnico non distingue più tra tempo di guerra e tempo di pace, perché tutto è preda di questa titanica mobilitazione. Il rapporto che si instaura tra il Lavoratore e la tecnica è di reciprocità, nel senso che mentre la tecnica è l’unica potenza che consente al Lavoratore di instaurare il proprio dominio sul mondo, solo l’instaurazione del regno del Lavoratore può consentire alla tecnica di raggiungere la sua perfezione, la sua compiutezza o espressione totale. Jünger crede che l’impersonalità attiva che trova espressione come “Arbeiter” possa dominare la tecnica, dunque l’avvento del regno del Lavoratore equivale all’irruzione di forze elementari nel mondo borghese ed è il preludio alla formazione totale dello spazio del Lavoro. La formulazione dell’essenza non tecnica della tecnica influenzerà profondamente le riflessioni filosofiche di uno dei più fedeli lettori di Jünger, Martin Heidegger [1889-1976]. Un paragrafo della presente ricerca è dedicato proprio a questa ascendenza. Il confronto tra i pensatori, a lungo vincolato e in parte ridotto allo scambio epistolare pubblicato e conosciuto con il titolo Oltre la linea [Über die Linie,1950] sul quale la critica è ampia e dibattuta2, non può non tenere conto anche del volume Zu Ernst Jünger3 che raccoglie gli appunti 2 In Italia sul dibattito, F. Jay, Chair This dissertation argues that ideas and experiences of friendship were central to the thinking of German radical conservatives in the twentieth century, from the pre-WWI years to the emergence, beginning in the 1970s, of the New Right. I approach this issue by examining the role of friendship in the circle around the writer Ernst Jünger (1895-1998). Like many in his generation, Jünger’s youthful alienation from a “cold” bourgeois society was felt via a contrast to the intimacy of personal friendship. A WWI soldier, Jünger penned memoirs of the trenches that revealed similar desires for mutual understanding, glorifying wartime comradeship as a bond deeper than words and a return to the “tacit accord” that supposedly marked traditional communities.

Jay, Chair This dissertation argues that ideas and experiences of friendship were central to the thinking of German radical conservatives in the twentieth century, from the pre-WWI years to the emergence, beginning in the 1970s, of the New Right. I approach this issue by examining the role of friendship in the circle around the writer Ernst Jünger (1895-1998). Like many in his generation, Jünger’s youthful alienation from a “cold” bourgeois society was felt via a contrast to the intimacy of personal friendship. A WWI soldier, Jünger penned memoirs of the trenches that revealed similar desires for mutual understanding, glorifying wartime comradeship as a bond deeper than words and a return to the “tacit accord” that supposedly marked traditional communities. After 1933, Jünger turned from a right-wing opponent of democracy into a voice of “spiritual resistance” to the Nazi regime. For Jünger and other non-Nazi Germans, friendship was a crucial space of candid communication and nonconformity to the norms of the Third Reich.
