SPEAKER BIOS

Joanna D. Underwood is the founder and board chair of Energy Vision, an environmental research organization she formed in 2006 to explore and promote sustainable energy and fuel strategies and technologies. Prior to Energy Vision, Ms. Underwood founded and ran INFORM from 1974-2005, where she led pioneering research and published more than 100 reports addressing land use and development, waste management and recycling, transportation and the chemical industry. The work she led on toxic chemicals ultimately resulted in the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990. In 2015, Ms. Underwood was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from NGVAmerica. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in European History.

Cynthia Hansen is Executive Vice President, Utilities and Power Operations. In this role, Cynthia is responsible for the overall leadership and operations of Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas, two of Canada’s largest natural gas utilities, as well as Enbridge Gas New Brunswick, Gazifère and St. Lawrence Gas. She also holds responsibility for the operations of Enbridge’s power generating assets, which currently include renewable energy investments in wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric, as well as waste heat recovery facilities and power transmission lines owned in whole or in part by Enbridge. Cynthia has more than 18 years of experience working in financial, operational and safety leadership roles within Enbridge, most recently as Senior Vice President, Operations within Liquids Pipelines. Cynthia is a member of Calgary- based Enbridge Inc.’s Executive Leadership Team. Cynthia was named one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 by the Women’s Executive Network, and was recognized as a Canadian Business Leader by Catalyst Canada.

Glenn Thibeault was appointed Ontario’s Minister of Energy in June 2016. As Minister of Energy, Glenn is committed to making sure all Ontarians have access to an affordable supply of clean, reliable energy. In October 2017, Glenn launched Ontario’s 2017 Long-Term Energy Plan. The 2017 Plan outlines the Ontario government’s investments to date and how it plans to continue building an energy system defined by fairness and choice for the people of Ontario. He previously served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, focusing on bringing forward the Climate Change Action Plan. Prior to entering provincial politics, Thibeault was the Member of Parliament for Sudbury and the Executive Director of the Sudbury United Way. He was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 2015 as the MPP for Sudbury. As a director with the United Way, Glenn led many successful campaigns in support of community development. He has also been a volunteer with many not for profits, as well as with minor hockey and football leagues as a coach and official. Thibeault was born and raised in Sudbury, and is a graduate of . He lives in Sudbury with his wife, Yolanda, and their two daughters.

Jennifer Green is the Executive Director of the Canadian Biogas Association. She works directly on behalf of the membership, with industry leaders and biogas stakeholders to create awareness and expand opportunities for biogas by advocating for best practices, policies and programs that fit industry needs. She is passionate about biogas and continues to direct her enthusiasm and energy to the betterment and growth of the sector.

Brandon Moffatt is the VP – Development for StormFisher. He has been in the waste-to-energy and value added product space for the past 15 years. He owns and operates a large-scale anaerobic digestion facility in London, ON. He has taken an active role in policy and advocacy as the industry has moved forward and often works with a range of stakeholders to creatively develop projects from the business development, planning, estimating, negotiating, budgeting, and procurement phases to project oversight. He is Professional Engineer with a degree from the University of Waterloo as well as his MBA.

Heather Pearson is Director, Air Policy Instruments and Program Design Branch at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.

Matt Tomich is president of the national environmental organization Energy Vision (EV), where he leads research, outreach and advisory services around sustainable energy and fuel solutions. Since joining EV in 2012, Matt has co-authored five reports, dozens of articles, and spoken widely on the topic of renewable gas and its role as an ultra-low-carbon transportation fuel. In 2015, he was named one of NYC’s Top Ten Energy Entrepreneurs by the publication Breaking Energy. Matt is a graduate of Haverford College (BA) and Kansas State (MBA).

Kevin Matthews is the founder and President of CCI BioEnergy Inc. (CCI), a privately owned company based in Newcastle, Ontario, Canada. Kevin founded CCI in 1992 to build, own and operate organics processing facilities that capture the resource benefits that are inherent in the organic materials. CCI built North America’s first large scale Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant in 2000, and has since built two additional facilities in Toronto and a third in Quebec. Today, CCI has 2 business platforms: Large Scale municipal Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants; and small-scale micro “on-site” energy plants.

Olivier Sylvestre has been the Director of Development for natural gas in transportation at EBI since 2014, a company active in the environment and energy sectors in Canada and Costa Rica. He is in charge of promoting the use of natural gas vehicles and manages the setup and operation of CNG filling stations and CNG vehicle rentals. Olivier graduated from Unversité de Sherbrooke with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He also holds a Master of Engineering in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Indra Maharjan P.Eng., CEM, CMVP, is Program Manager, Energy Conservation, Resource Recovery and Climate Change at the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA). He is a Senior Engineer with experience in energy conservation and energy efficiency projects. He currently leads OCWA’s energy conservation and resource recovery program across Ontario and is the program manager for this group. He brings knowledge of water and wastewater sector in the province, having worked with more than 150 municipalities across Ontario by fostering innovation within this sector to drive efficiency.

Brad DeMaeyer is the Manager of Business Development – RNG within Union Gas’ Sales and Business Development department. Brad has been employed at Union Gas since 2011 and during that time has held roles within Finance and Accounting, Sales and Demand Side Management and Business Development. In his current role, Brad’s accountabilities include RNG strategy development, identifying potential investments in RNG, collaborating with producers and developers and executing commercial arrangements. Additionally, Brad interfaces with industry associations including his board member seat for the Canadian Biogas Association. Brad holds a HBA with an IT minor from the University of Windsor.

Cam Carruthers is the Executive Director of the Oil, Gas and Alternative Energy Division (OGAED) at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), where his priorities include methane and fuels regulations. Previously, he was a Director at both Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). He has worked with five federal departments, two provincial governments and the UN. His areas of focus include climate change, sustainable development and compliance enforcement. As a legal officer, he served at both Global Affairs Canada and the UN, and was briefly with BC Crown Counsel in .

Carlyle Khan is the Director, Infrastructure Development and Asset Management at the City of Toronto. In this role, Carlyle is responsible for the stewardship and state-of-good-repair of program assets valued at over $600M associated with the Solid Waste Management Services program. With over 25 years of public and private experience in the Public Works, Carlyle has a high level of working knowledge of municipal programs, and has excelled in assessing business and developing strategic plans and highly effective business solutions.

Martin Imbleau is Senior Vice President, Operations, Transport and Development of new Energies at Gaz Metro. He is responsible for identifying and managing strategic business opportunities, as well as new energies. He is also notably responsible for the operations, as well as the gas supply and transport, along with the company’s strategic planning. Mr. Imbleau began his career at Gaz Métro in 1996 as Legal Counsel and went on to hold the positions of Director, Business Development, and Vice President, Business Development, Gas Supply, Transport, Operations, Major Projects and Renewable Energies. Mr. Imbleau has a master’s degree in law from the Université de Montréal and is a member of the Barreau du Québec. He chairs the board of Écotech Québec and sits on the boards of Forces AVENIR, Lawyers Without Borders Canada, the HEC Chair in Energy Sector Management and UQAM’s Raoul-Dandurand Chair in Strategic and Diplomatic Studies.

David Donovan is a Senior Government Affairs Advisor at Enbridge, Inc. As a member of the government affairs team, David advocates for Enbridge initiatives in Ontario, including a wide range of low-carbon projects, including renewable natural gas, hydrogen, natural gas transportation, energy conservation programming, and renewable energies such as geothermal, wind and solar. Over the past two years David has been helping inform the provincial government on ways to advance a market for RNG in Ontario. David has been with Enbridge for four years and brings a wealth of experience to his role, including 5 years at Queen’s Park.

Amir Ghasdi is Business Development Director for Xebec Adsorption, Inc. In this role, he oversees the development of Xebec’s biogas business globally. Mr. Ghasdi is an expert in the field of biogas purification technology, with more than 12 years of experience in process development and design. Personally and professionally, Mr. Ghasdi is inspired by and committed to the power and possibilities of renewable energy as the source to a clean, sustainable future for our planet.

Aaron Baker leads the Global Environmental Products group at BP Canada. He has been with BP for 13 years and has worked in a number of roles in Trading and Marketing business, most notably, 8 years Marketing Natural Gas in Eastern Canada. In his current role, he is responsible for procuring Canadian produced RNG and marketing Carbon allowances and offset products in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Aaron has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary.

Ricardo Hamdan is the Sales Manager for Hitachi Zosen Inova, a supplier of high solids anaerobic digestion, biogas upgrading, and power to gas technologies based out of Toronto. He has 10 years of experience in the industry, particularly in RNG. Prior to working for HZI, he was the Director of Business Development for Octaform, a tank supplier in the biogas industry, and the North American Sales Manager for Greenlane Biogas, a supplier of biogas upgrading equipment. Ricardo has participated in signature private and municipal projects in Mexico, US and Canada and currently serves on the board of the Canadian Biogas Association.

Charlie Ker is Director, Industry Relations & Regional General Manager at Cummins Westport, Inc. (CWI) for Canada. Charlie oversees CWI’s business interests as he works closely with Cummins’ North American distribution network to help private companies, governments and industry groups on broad policy issues as well as fleet-specific projects. A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Charlie serves on the board of the Canadian Natural Gas Vehicle Alliance and California NGV Partnership.

Paulina Leung is the Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Business Development of Emterra Group, a family-owned waste diversion and recyclables resource recovery leader in Canada and the state of Michigan for over 40 years. Wearing multiple hats as both an employee and family business member of Emterra Group, Paulina is responsible for initiatives that grow and develop all companies within Emterra Group, including developing new products and services for the circular economy, bidding and implementing new contracts and undertaking special projects, especially those related to business process improvements, customer service delivery, and green/alternative fuels and technology.

Mark Isherwood is vice president, infranchise sales, marketing and customer care for Union Gas Limited. As a member of the Union Gas Leadership Group, Isherwood leads all in-franchise residential, commercial/ industrial and demand side management functions. In addition, he is accountable for the management of Union Gas’ revenue cycle through its customer care operation. During his more than 30 years with the company, Isherwood has held a number of senior management positions, leading Union Gas’ ex- franchise business development and long-term storage and transportation sales efforts, as well as capacity management and utilization. He gained broad experience in previous roles at Union Gas, which involved responsibility for purchasing natural gas supplies, marketing and sales for industrial customers and, early on, pipeline and compressor engineering. Isherwood graduated from the University of Waterloo with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and a MBA from the University of Windsor. His interests include golf in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter.

Malini Girdhar is Vice President, Market Development and Public Affairs at Enbridge Gas Distribution, one of North America’s fastest growing utilities with a customer base of more than 2 million households and businesses.

Malini is accountable for the company’s strategic response to a lower carbon economy, which includes the advancement of renewable natural gas, compressed and liquefied natural gas for transportation, geothermal energy, and energy conservation. Malini also oversees the company’s Cap and Trade program. In her previous executive role, Malini led the team responsible for Enbridge Gas’ largest capital project, working collaboratively with stakeholders to secure regulatory approval for a major pipeline reinforcement project in the GTA.

Malini is a Chartered Financial Analyst and has a graduate degree in Economics. She also sits on the Board of Directors for Utilization Technology Development (UTD) and the Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC).
