Wellington Rugby League are growing! So, we are looking for a special person with passion for our game to join our hard-working team.

We are after someone who has a range of skills with a heart for our Communities and a passion to grow Rugby League. We are on the hunt for someone who can develop sport programmes, has a proven record of engaging with teams/people and delivering results, with strong vision and energy to take our game and people from strength to strength; someone who can manaaki our tamariki, an agile thinker that can develop programmes based on our communities needs around rugby league and holistic wellbeing.

This is an action orientated position, and the successful candidate will work closely with our community.

Our team is small so sometimes that means we all get stuck in to get the mahi done well! You will have excellent communication skills, and understand positive relationships are how we make the magic happen. The successful candidate will be offered a fixed term contract of up to six months.

The WRL Board is seeking applications from people who have a passion for rugby league and people. We need a dynamic development officer who will inspire whole generations to not only enjoy our game but to celebrate their involvement in it because of the lifelong love of rugby league they share with their families and clubs.

Our new Development Officer will have experience in development within the community and a strong management background. They have an in-depth knowledge of rugby league ideally with direct community experience of the game such as that gained in a club setting. You understand the concept of pathways and the importance of participation at all levels and for everyone.

The ability to engage with a majority Māori and Pasifika stakeholder community is essential for this role. You will understand holistic wellbeing concepts that resonate with this group and have a strong understanding of developing relationships that are centred around concepts of whanaungatanga and manaakitanga.

The Development officer will report to the WRL CEO. This is a full-time, six-month fixed term role based in the Pelorus Trust Sports House.

WRLs new Strategic Plan (available with the role description) sets aspirational goals for our game which will see more people playing and enjoying rugby league, greater community connections, well run competitions and a well led, accountable organisation that serves the needs of our participants and future participants. Together with the Board, NZRL and the staff of WRL you will deliver this strategy in partnership with our community.

Competencies & Attributes

• Broad knowledge across all aspects of Rugby League competitions and development, especially with youth programmes • Experience having worked with youth in a sports environment • Knowledge and experience of competition and development in a sporting environment • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of coach development and Referee development at community level and representative level • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required • Ability to engage with Māori and Pasifika communities • Desire and ability to lead through our values • Superior communication and engagement skills • Ability and desire to think strategically and to work to constantly improve WRL • Ability to work in a high-energy, dynamic, and fast-paced environment • Courage to set high stretch standards of performance for self and others • Willingness to chip in and help all others in a small office environment • The highest standards of professionalism at all times across all situations • Understanding, embracing and enforcement of WRL policy relating to health and safety and other legislative requirements such as the Vulnerable Children’s Act • Relevant tertiary qualification desired but not required
