Fiestalicious and More: The Celebration of Faith Continues

The pandemic has not stopped the Filipino faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto from continuing with initiatives marking the 500th year of Christianity in the Philippines (PH500). A fresh wave of activities has been prepared to extend the celebration of our faith in our community.

One of these activities is FIESTALICIOUS! With the enthusiastic support of FV Foods, led by Mr. Mel Galeon, FIESTALICIOUS aims to celebrate our rich heritage and delicious cuisine and at the same time, to support the goals of the Quincentennial celebration. Mel and his team came up with meal sets for family and friends to enjoy at a very reasonable price ($60-75/set) and which will be available at FV Foods from August 1 to 31, 2021. What makes FIES- TALICIOUS even better is that FV Foods will donate part of the proceeds to help support Filipino seminarians and religious studying at the Archdiocese of Toronto. As Mel would say, “Nag-enjoy ka na sa masarap na pagkain, nakatulong ka pa sa ating pananampalataya!”

Each FIESTALICIOUS meal set is good for 4 people and comes conveniently packed in a large takeout box. The dishes in each set were carefully chosen and prepared to complement each other. To align with the celebration, the meal sets were named after people who were part of that historic time when Christianity was first brought to the Philippines – Lapu-Lapu, Magellan, Rajah Humabon, Reyna Juana and the Missionaries. FIESTALICIOUS features dishes such as kare-kare, crispy pata, chicken adobo, pansit, barbeque, inihaw, pinakbet, sago’t gulaman and more! Are you getting hungry now? For more details, visit www.ph500toronto.com or call FV Foods at (416) 751-7555 to order.

Following the series of PH500 activities started last year (Simbang Gabi, Inaugural Mass, LenTalks, Easter Mass with Fr. Jerry Orbos, Virtual talks for fami- ly, young adults, youth, etc.), more faith-focused events are being lined up in the next few months - a Mass and Healing service on August 13 at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Virtual Rosary in October, Video takes on real-life stories of Filipino migrants in Canada and their journey of faith, and more. The closing ceremony for the year-long event will be held in November and Fr. Lorenzo Salandanan, chairperson of the PH500 Organizing Committee, has invited Cardinal Thomas Collins to be the guest of honour and main celebrant at the closing Mass.

The Committee maximized online and social media’s potential in place of in-person gatherings to ensure that the faithful are engaged and safe amid the pandemic. It was a pleasant surprise to discover the enthusiasm and support of Filipinos across the diocese, elsewhere in Canada and around the world. The participation of several Filipino clergy and religious in the many talks done over the past few months was likewise a major highlight and blessing for the Jubilee celebration in the diocese.

Filipinos are ‘gifted to give’ and it is this ‘giftedness’ that continues to enflame the hearts of Filipinos today to engage in mission here at home and in oth- er countries. It is hoped that the Quincentennial celebration will bring a missionary renewal of the Church—in the Philippines and in many Filipino com- munities abroad including here in Canada, not only now but into the future. ◼
