Group Masturbation Among Young and Old(er): A Summary With Questions Martha Cornog Philadelphia, PA Masturbation involving groups has been virtually unstudied. There is some evidence that a substantial percentage of heterosexual and homosexual men have participated in group mas turbation as boys. Girls, who masturbate with lower incidence and less frequently than boys, appear to form pairs more often than groups for masturbation. At least 40 organized adult men's masturbation clubs exist worldwide. Probably many more small, informal male groups flourish less publicly. Adult women's recreational sex groups do not appear to focus on masturbation per se. A few mixed-gender adult masturbation clubs exist. Conjectures are given about participation by males versus females, number and characteristics of partici pants, and trends. -]SET 26:340-346, 2001 We have termed onanism a solitary vice, and nothing used to assemble to practice this vice, and that a whole is more just. ARAFAT AND WAYNE L. COTTON Abstract In this study, the authors have examined the masturbation practices of both male and female college students, attempting to test some of the premises long held that men and women differ significantly in such prac- tices. The findings indicate that while there are differences in many of the variables examined, there are others which show striking similarities. Thus, they open to question a number of assumptions held regarding differences in sexual needs and responses of males and females. Introduction The theoretical framework for this study has its basis in the early studies of Kinsey, Pomeroy, and Martin (1948). These first studies sought to document factually and statistically masturbation practices in this country. Though innovative, these studies have become out- dated and limited in light of contemporary developments.

Tinder-ing Desire: The Circuit of Culture, Gamified Dating and Creating Desirable Selves Tanya F. Oishi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading Committee: LeiLani Nishime, Chair Ralina Joseph Carmen Gonzalez Program Authorized to Offer Degree Communication 2 ©Copyright 2019 Tanya F. Oishi 3 University of Washington Abstract Tinder-ing Desire: Tanya F. Oishi Chair of the Supervisory Committee: LeiLani Nishime Communication This dissertation starts at intersection of race, gender, and technology, all of which will be discussed in depth throughout this project, and the fluid state of being constituted and being undone by one another. It is in this state of vulnerability that relationships are initiated, through technology that these relationships are shaped and facilitated, and within the constraints of social expectations that these interactions are able/allowed to occur (Duck, 2011). As life becomes more mediated and interactions more facilitated through technological means, focusing on relationships facilitated through dating apps is illustrative of the ways in which mobile technologies are changing the way we communicate with one another. The introduction provides the theoretical overview of the literature off of which the rest of the dissertation builds its arguments: the importance of interpersonal connections, the positionality of Asian men in the U.S., and the mutual shaping of society and technology, as well 4 as a justification for a mixed methodological approach to these areas of inquiry. The second chapter looks at the subreddit r/Tinder Profile Review Week thread to see how individuals seek feedback on creating a desirable self and describes how these impression management strategies of Asian men differ from the group which is comprised predominantly by white men.

  • Aphrodisiacs in the Global History of Medical Thought
Journal of Global History (2021), 16: 1, 24–43 doi:10.1017/S1740022820000108 ARTICLE Aphrodisiacs in the global history of medical thought Alison M. Downham Moore1,2,* and Rashmi Pithavadian3 1School of Humanities and Communication Arts, Western Sydney University, Locked Bag 1797, Penrith NSW 2751, Australia, 2Freiburg Institute for Advanced Study, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Albertstraße 19, Freiburg im Breisgau 79100, Germany and 3School of Health Sciences, Western Sydney University, Locked Bag 1797, Penrith NSW 2751, Australia E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The study of aphrodisiacs is an overlooked area of global history which this article seeks to remedy by considering how such substances were commercially traded and how medical knowledge of them was exchanged globally between 1600 and 1920. We show that the concept of ‘aphrodisiacs’ as a new nominal category of pharmacological substances came to be valued and defined in early modern Latin, English, Dutch, Swiss, and French medical sources in relation to concepts transformed from their origin in both the ancient Mediterranean world and in medieval Islamicate medicine. We then consider how the general idea of aphrodisiacs became widely discredited in mid-nineteenth-century scientific medicine until after the First World War in France and in the US, alongside their commercial proliferation in the context of new colonial trade exchanges between Europe, the US, Southeast Asia, Africa, India, and South America. In both examples, we propose that global entanglements played a significant role in both the cohesion and the discreditation of the medical category of aphrodisiacs.

  • Evil Habits: New Zealand's Anti-Masturbation Fervour, 1860S
New Zealand Journal of History, 50, 1 (2016) Evil Habits NEW ZEALAND’S ANTI-MASTURBATION FERVOUR, 1860s–1960s1 IN DUNEDIN IN 1883, SEVEN-YEAR-OLD JOSEPH WAIN DIED. His parents had beaten him, tied his hands to his back and confined him to his bedroom without food, drink or a source of heat. At the inquest Dr Hocken explained that ‘this little boy was given to an evil habit, and that the correction was administered to cure him’. In desperation Joseph’s father had approached Dr Isaiah De Zouche in the hope of having Joseph circumcised to stop the ‘evil habit’.2 ‘Evil habit’ was a euphemism for masturbation, a term indicating ‘self-stimulation which is deliberate and designed to effect erotic arousal’.3 The post mortem revealed that Joseph had a fractured arm, but had died from tuberculosis. There had been irritation in the bladder and he had probably passed a kidney stone.4 Joseph was simply trying to gain relief, yet his parents interpreted his actions as autoerotic and therefore masturbatory – a commonly made parental and medical error when dealing with prepubertal boys during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Why did Joseph’s parents so vehemently fear masturbation? The answer lay in a blend of Judeo- Christian religious dogma and nineteenth-century mainstream medicine and quackery, both of which fed off an inheritance of the eighteenth century’s erroneous comprehension of male sexuality.5 Historians have provided various accounts of the rise and fall of masturbation anxiety. Jean Stengers and Anne Van Neck have given an overview

Bestiality and Religion Richard L. Matteoli Those who lie down with dogs, get up with fleas. Blackfoot proverb. (Monterey, Calif.) – Bestiality, one aspect of Zoophilia, causes cancer of the penis documented in a Brazilian interdisciplinary study.[1] Zoophilia, is categorized in the DSM-IV as a paraphilia not otherwise specified. Zoophilia is an erotic fixation on animals that may result in sexual excitement through real or fancied contact. Man having intercourse with a horse, exterior of temple in Khaguraho.
