PRESIDENTS REPORT

This year we saw one of our long serving and high profile club life members receive a top honour. Dave Gallop received the Queens Service Medal. On behalf of the Club I would like to congratulate Dave on this outstanding award.

This was another frustrating season for the women. Again this season we were not given automatic right into the senior competition although we were invited to play in a round robin senior competition later in the season where the women played with dignity. The team had there first win as a senior side for many years with a win over Burnside West and some notable performances against the other senior sides. But again, the Canterbury Cricket Association took a dim view of our side gaining senior status on a regular basis. Ongoing discussions with the CCA have seen them continue to put obstacles and conditions in our way. Even as I write this, they still want more assurances. When are going to take the bull by the horns and look at what they are doing to the competition and club cricket in general. It has not been an easy time for everyone both on and off the field. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the women’s/girls sides of the club for all there hard work and effort to get us to where we are. We will be continuing to fight for what we believe we well and truly deserve – a senior women’s team.

At this stage there are two people I would like to thank who are stepping down from their important roles in the club. · Tracy Henderson has been coaching coordinator with the junior club for six years. Her efforts have included setting up the junior clubs coaching plan and having input into the senior club coaching, coaching the coaches and running coaching courses, setting up a junior club holiday program and took a strong part in the development of women’s cricket within our club. Tracy leaves us to concentrate on her career and we wish her all the best. · Ivan Thomson is stepping down as junior convenor. Ivan has been in charge of the junior club since 1992 and now steps down to be involved at the secondary school level. During his time, the junior club has developed into it's own club. Each year it has continued to grow from 10 teams when Ivan first took control up to 45 teams now, making it the biggest in town. Ivan takes an active role on all the club committees and is involved with junior coaching. He would spend Saturdays going around visiting the sides and still have time to play the odd game for our Presidents side. Thanks must go to Ivan and his committee for their continued efforts in developing junior and secondary school cricket in the club.

This season I took the opportunity to go out to the Club’s golf day at Avondale. This event proves to be very popular every year (thanks to Bert for all his hard work). Many seem to find the energy after a hard night to attend this important golfing event. One person even before reaching the second hole found himself racing back to the clubroom toilet but unfortunately didn’t make it in time. The success of the two mystery bus trips was again well supported by the club. In general, club social events are proving to be the club highlights and I would like to thank everyone for supporting them.

Our 6th grade team from the previous season took the opportunity to change competitions and play in the Suburban Association Competition. As a member of this side we enjoyed the change and especially enjoyed our “local derby” matches against Southern Districts. We took this opportunity to help to continue the building of relations between our clubs.

It was good to see so many members supporting our sponsors. Let’s keep it up. They provide the club with much needed sponsorship otherwise we would struggle to survive. A big thank you must go to our sponsors for there continued support especially the Sandridge and Tuskers. Again Dave and his Sydenham Trust team (previously Friends of Sydenham) must take the thanks for there continued hard work in ensuring club sponsorship.

There have been some frustrating times both on and off the field throughout the season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their time and support – the committees, coaches, captains, players and everyone in the club.

I would especially like to thank Simon Vincent for all his hard work over the last season, not only as treasurer but all his time and effort in the general club running and for helping and advising me.

I look forward to next season with the development of the new senior pitch block, upgraded grass practice facilities and hopefully some upgrading of the clubrooms.

And please remember - don’t sit back and be critical – get in and help the committee solve any problems. Let’s get out there and make Sydenham the club the best in town. See you next season.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

We were met by wet pitches and rain at the start of the 2000-2001 season but once the sun came out everyone was eager to get into it.

The majority of last seasons 6th grade team made the change to playing suburban cricket. The guys enjoyed playing against some different faces and along side our friends at Southern Districts. Beckenham Park, the home ground of Southern Districts also proved to be a great practice facility for our senior and 2nd grade squads. It was great for our top players to finally have some good quality grass to practice on. It may have had something to do with our 2nd grade guys playing some good cricket and working their way into the one-day competition semi finals.

The women’s teams had another big season with some really good results. The ladies deserve a senior team this season and have done everything possible to try and achieve this.

3rd grade started with two teams but unfortunately ended up having to drop one due to player numbers. The remaining players became the Sydenham Vikings and ended up having a very successful season.

Our junior club has continued to grow and grow. It’s great to see so many extremely talented young guys and girls coming up through the club.

Free BBQ’s always went down a treat. Everyone was keen to get stuck into a sausage and a bit of tomato sauce after a long day in the field. Both mystery bus trips were a hit and enjoyed by all. It would be very hard to find someone who could remember which pubs we ended up going to though.

Things are looking up for this coming season with a lot of great ideas and plans on the cards. I hope everyone has a good one, lots of runs, wickets and fun!

OBITUARIES

BERT KING, one of Sydenham’s best known and respected sportsmen over many decades, died in , aged 98.

Cricket, rugby league, and bowls in the Sydenham district all benefited greatly from Mr King’s unstinting service as a player and administrator, and he keenly followed their fortunes until his death.

After one senior cricket appearance in 1917-18, Mr King became Sydenham’s regular wicketkeeper between 1922-23 and 1942-43. He played in 146 matches, took 145 dismissals, compiled 2254 runs, with a highest score of 66 against Old Collegians, and shared in the 1932-33 championship win.

Mr King was a big hitter. A few years ago Walter Hadlee recalled that as a boy he watched Mr King club sixes over the old Sydenham Park pavilion and across Brougham Street.

As an administrator, Mr King was the Club’s secretary (1925-26), club captain (1947 to 1955), president (1953 to 1955), and patron (1967 to 1982).

Our sincere sympathies and condolences go to any club members who have suffered bereavements. COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

This committee was set up by the Sydenham Cricket Trust (previously Friends of Sydenham) last winter and reports back to the Sydenham and Southern District Cricket Club committees. The committee was made up of myself, Dave Gallop, Simon Vincent, Tony Danenberg, Tom White, Ivan Thomson, Danny Timpson (Sthn Dist), Glen Hooper, Tracy Henderson, with several others joining the committee during the season.

The purpose of the committee is to control and oversee coaching at all levels for both clubs with a budget set at the start of the season. This season, $30,000 was allocated for coaching which included money for scholarships, which this year went to Michael Jones and Greg Airns. Our aim is to be able to offer coaching at all levels to everyone in both Sydenham and Southern Districts Cricket Clubs.

This season was reasonably successful coming in under budget but there were some areas that still need attention, which we will be looking at over the winter months. Thanks must go to Glen and Tracy for their effort in setting up the budgets for the committee this season.

The committee was also responsible for the pitch/ground preparation and the groundsman at Sydenham and Beckenham Parks. As you are aware we encountered problems during the season in this area, which are currently being addressed by this committee. A new senior block, improvement of the practice facilities and the use of other grounds will be addressed over the winter months.

SENIOR MEN TEAM REPORT

The Sydenham Seniors for the season 2000-2001 had an inconsistent season, with many below average performances, which was very frustrating for myself. The season was one of missed opportunities. There was not one match in which the team dominated and pressured the opposition. To be competitive the players have to show a lot more discipline, concentration and responsibility to the situations that arise in the game of cricket. On the positive note there were some good individual performances that these players can be satisfied with.

A bright note was the arrival of a number of young players with very good futures in the game. These young players brought the right attitude, which was encouraging for the Sydenham Seniors.

There are a few thank yous from last season. Firstly the Sandridge Hotel, without them Sydenham Seniors would not be possible, secondly the friends of Sydenham, without their enthusiasm and hard work the club would really struggle and finally a large thank you to Glen, Grant and Mike for all their support and efforts on and off the field.

Next season has more promise and I am sure that the players will be keen to improve their performances and this will lead to a successful team unit.

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

For the first time in recent years 2nds had a new captain, while not a sprightly young thing, definitely someone who wasn’t alive when man first discovered fire. Seriously though, Burt Walker, has been a huge influence on both the team and myself, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all the support he has given me in this first year of captaincy and in my years playing under his captaincy.

Seconds started the season with a very new look side. Some subtle recruiting in the off season had secured a number of players with plenty to offer the club. These new players and existing members of 2nds formed a formidable side that dominated the first half the season, in both the one trophy and cup competitions.

Stand out performances for the season in batting (2 day Trophy) included Jamil Hassan (75, 55, 55), Adam Neylon (96, 50, 134), Kim Smythe (49,58), Dave Crosbie (100*), Brendan Diamanti (68), Ben Larter (49,65). Stand out performances for the season in batting (1 day Cup) included James Berryman (75), Kieran Williams (73*, 84, 90*), Ben Larter (54*, 41, 51*), James Coyle (115, 44), James Stevens (57), Cam Moffat (66*), Dave Crosbie (63, 49), Todd Harris (43).

Stand out performances for the season in bowling (2 day Trophy) included Ben Larter (5- 37, 6-24, 4-52), Craig Ross (8-38), Burt Walker (6-16), Dave Crosbie (4-55). Stand out performances for the season in bowling (1 day Cup) included Dave Crosbie (3-4), James Stevens (4-7), Ben Larter (3-21, 4-31, 3-53), Kieran Williams (3-42), Todd Harris (3-30), Kim Smythe (4-74).

In the two-day competition we finished in 6th place. We had convincing wins against BWU (8 wickets), LPW Gulls (218 runs), MAR (innings and 75 runs), with draws against LPW Dragons and HSOB. In the one-day competition we were unfortunately beaten in the semi- finals and ended up finishing 5th. Two highlights from this competition were the 449/5 put on against Marist, and the 10 win over St. Albans chasing 174.

With a strong team that mainly stayed the same up until Xmas, we ended up highly placed in both competitions at the half way point at Xmas. Unfortunately (as has been the case for quite a few years) things went awry at this point. Ryan Kramer managed to dislocate one thumb and then break the other one while bowling against Riccarton, effectively ruling him out for the season. Players moving up to seniors and unavailability due to other commitments put a large strain on player numbers, and unfortunately we didn’t have sufficient numbers coming through from lower grades. 2nds were forced to field under strength sides for much of the second half of the season as a result.

However overall the season was an enjoyable one. Sydenham 2nds showed they can play some exciting and intelligent cricket, and gave the eventual winners of the competition a run for their money.

Kim Smythe, James Stevens, Dave Crosbie, and Ryan Kramer have shown great potential as valuable all rounders this season. Adam Neylon, James Coyle and Kieran Williams have been the anchors of our batting as shown by some of their great knocks. Cam Moffat, Craig Ross, Burt Walker, and Ben Larter have done the bulk of the bowling this season and have all bowled their hearts out, picking up some impressive figures along the way. Lastly I would like to give a huge thanks to Brent Whear our scorer, who yet again was called onto the field this season. Likewise our manager/coach Grant Matthews without whom this season couldn’t have run as smoothly. From sorting out tactics to fixing my car, Grant has been a huge asset to both the club and the team.

Cheers to the boys for the 2000/2001 season, hope to see you all at preseason for 2001/2002.

3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

The Vikings formed right from the start a team would challenge for the title all year. The team consisted of a wonderful mix of youth and experience, some players exhibiting both as in the case of Tony ‘the walking frame’ Danenberg whom return for another year of gruelling 3rd grade competition. The age range in the team was as varied as Rob ‘iron paw’ Kelly, with the youngest being Jason 'the baby' Robinson up to Tony (age unknown).

The team quickly established a fine all-round drinking record at our suburb sponsors Tuskers with many players forging a very special and close relationship with the bar staff.

Kyle ‘Italian stallion’ Hunter always keen and eager in the field except when it came to actually having to field was the backbone of the team, well actually the backbone, torso, legs and arms of the team. The bowling was held together by Ryan ‘special officer doofus’ Burnett whom with a personal tally of 50 wickets at an amazing average of 8.7 really was the standout player and fully deserved the player of the year even if at the prizegiving he couldn’t work out how to turn his cell phone off when it rang three times during the speeches. James ‘the glove’ McKenzie picked up the fielder of the year with 19 catches, many of those with his eyes closed and a few with a little help from his friends. Iron paw won the keeping trophy which when you have seen Rob keep you’ll know just how remarkable this effort was, Garry Endacott has nothing on Rob. Jason ‘the baby’ Robinson developed superbly well throughout the year and I have no doubt that he will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come. The two Andrews, Stace and Craggs, formed a valuable combination with Ryan and between them led the way for the Vikings bowling destroying more than their fair share of batting orders. Mike Mitchell was the form all rounder of the team bowling well and batting solidly all year and with help from James ‘why run when I can hit boundaries?’ Berryman produced most of the batting from the top order, which at times looked suspect. Tony Danenberg, James McKenzie, Kyle Hunter, and Tapi Himiona all had some brilliant batting performances usually to win a game or to gain first innings but could have been a bit more consistant.

I would like to pay special thanks to all those people whom filled in for us throughout the year, Brian Campion, Gareth Lawless and towards the end along with Kyle Butcher, Tom Merral, Ben Williams, Gareth Martin, Hayden Spatcher and Regan Hall. Without these players we would have struggled to field teams and I thank them. To all whom played for the Vikings I wish the best and for the rest of the Sydenham club I wish them many years of prosperity and enjoyable cricket.

SUBURBAN 3C GRADE TEAM REPORT

What a scandal. A long serving club team defecting to the Suburban competition. You would think that the world was coming to an end if you listened to some of the pre-season talk. With the possible merging of Sydenham and Southern Districts we had the option this season of playing in the Suburban competition but still as a Sydenham side so we decided to give it a go with the main attraction being playing against different sides and at new venues.

The season started poorly including a 10-wicket loss in the opening game to the eventual competition winners and by the Xmas break we were near the foot of the table with only three wins.

The Xmas pudding must have agreed with everyone because the second half of the season saw a complete form reversal where we won our opening nine games, and of the two we lost one was the last game of the year against the leading team, who couldn't be caught, and most people were more interested in the BBQ and beer.

As usual our batting was the area that let us down with many players having the odd good innings but struggling for consistency. Our bowling was a different story having seven first choice bowlers to call on ranging from penetrating to containing to unique and we were often able to defend small targets. Also our catching and fielding standard (with two glaring exceptions) was much better than in previous years making the bowlers' jobs much easier. Three bowlers took career best figures during the season.

Overall, an enjoyable season to which everybody contributed in some way and hopefully everybody should be back for next season to do it all again.

Season Highlights Thrashing the competition winners by 137 runs. Syd 213/6 v. Richmond WMC 76.

Defending a score of 129 against Maddisons after they were 74/0 and 114/3. Syd 129 v. Maddisons 123.

Season Lows Losing to Richmond WMC by 10 wickets on the opening day of the season. Syd 106 v. Richmond WMC 107/0.

Losing to upper Riccarton in the first round. Defending 81 we had them 40-9 but from then on we couldn't catch a cold and lost by 1 wicket. Syd 81 v. Upper Riccarton 82/9.

Players: Jon Bennett Batted consistently with only two scores in single figures but out too often in the 10-29 range. Didn't bowl much this year but was able to abuse captaincy in order to field in the best positions and take most catches.

John Gower Started the season OK but fell away as time went on. Needs to work on which ball to defend instead of trying to attack every ball.

Ahmed Finally had the season we all knew he could. Played a lot straighter this year and more patiently although not afraid to bring out the big pull shot when the ball was short. Three fifties a good reward and also made mid-on "his" position taking the second most number of catches.

Andy Chisnall El Presidente started the season as a bowler but due to injuries ended up a specialist batsman. Often distracted by the pressures of the world, Andy still had the third best runs total and got some cheap wickets even though he bowled more wides in 25 overs this season than in the whole of any other season.

Simon Vincent Even though he is a walking advertisement for ACC Simon can still do it all. Bowled for a third of a season, wicket keeper for a third of a season and injured for the other third. Simon had two methods of dismissal when batting. Either he was out to the easiest catch of all time or someone took the catch of the day.

Lionel Schulte 46 wickets at an average under 10, what more needs to be said. Lionel remains one of the grade's best bowlers always getting the early breakthrough and an expert at cleaning up the tail. Unfortunately injury towards the end of the season cut short his aim of 50 wickets for the season.

Stacey Garrett A good year opening the bowling into the wind, Stacey's outswing was a good complement to Lionel's inswing at the other end. Didn't get as many wickets in the second part of the season as early on but still bowled well. While he took out the 'Duck' award with seven (including 4 golden) Stacey was valuable down the order where he usually scored at better than run a ball.

Shane Evans Shane had a great year picking up a lot of wickets, career best figures and the team's player of the year award. A guy with a good attitude he didn't get as many overs as he should because we tried to fit all bowlers into the game. Always able to get the breakthrough usually with a ball that confused the batsman even more than our fielders.

Scott Tizzard Bowled well through the middle of the season but struggled with consistency either side. Career best 6/25 against Addington and one of the season's highlights was watching Scott smash the ball over Cow Corner in what turned out to be a match winning last wicket partnership. More concentration needed on cricket and less on fast cars and text messages.

Rocky Kingi Rocky gave up bowling this year to take back his schoolboy position of wicket keeper with some success. Also decided to open the batting although there were too many 10 year olds bowling to enable the same success here. Should be an expert on cloud formations by now, judging by his batting technique.

Richard McKernan Played after Xmas and his joining coincided with the team's pickup in form (although we don't dare tell him this). Gave us the extra batsman we needed as well as keeping and showing the other batsmen why you don't charge or reverse sweep. Never short on advice for the opposition he also picked up the season's best figures with 7 wickets for 11 runs including a double hat-trick when called upon to complete an over when Lionel broke down.

Tim Bloomfield Also played after Xmas. Tim's bowling meant we could attack from one end the whole game and he is a handy batsman as well especially when quick runs are required. "Step- thru" boy will be a big boy when he grows up and should go on to bigger and better things for the club.

PRESIDENTS GRADE TEAM REPORT

The 2000-01 season was the most successful for some years with 10 wins gained, and a place in the top half achieved.

A number of wins were real ‘nail biters’ which added to the excitement and enjoyment, if not to the amount of hair on one head.

The introduction of a few “young fluffs” in there 40’s from the successful cavalier side was an important factor in the improved performance.

Two great servants of the club, Jack Harliwich and Noel Moorhead each turned 70 prior to the season. Jack has turned his skills to bowls (successfully – who would have expected anything else) whilst Noel, despite a move to the Marlborough Sounds, managed to turn out in a few matches.

Season highlights were many with perhaps scoring 330 against St Albans Blue and dismissing Sumner Blue for 47 being the most exceptional performances. The desperately close wins against HSOB, West and Hospital were memorable also.

The low points were few. The Riccarton disaster apart (after we were dismissed for 49 Fitzie offered to run a batting clinic during the week) we were competitive in all matches. Tom White had a prolific season with the bat including a great century against Old Colls. Unfortunately he spent most of March on the Physios slab. Mark Paget had a productive season and in partnership with Tom, generally got the side away to a good start. George Carnoutsos showed his class with a number of brilliant innings whilst others to contribute well were Bill Thomson, Paul Shanks, Bill Nicolson and Stu Simpson.

The bowling was generally steady without striking loose bowelled terror into the opposition. Mike Dolden was particularly demanding and was the top wicket taker whilst Paul Fitzimons was accurate and typically miserly in his run concession. Stu Simpson, Bruce Fergusson, John Lovell Smith, Murray Freeth and Martin Abel all had their successful days whilst Bill Thomson and Bill Nicolson proved effective partnership breakers. I will leave it to Tom to talk you through his bowling figures.

The irrepressible Mr White also featured in one of the fielding highlights – 4 catches at slip against Sumner. In general, the fielding and catching was pretty good with Mark Paget, Stu Simpson, George Carnoutsos, Bruce Ferguson and Bill Nicolson leading the way.

The quality of Paul Shanks wicket keeping was an important factor in our success. The high standard behind the stumps positively influenced the fielding overall and the bowlers gained added confidence also.

My sincere thanks to all team members for your support and advice. Thanks also to those who made themselves available to “come off the bench” often at short notice, in particular Russell Dann.

Thanks also to Mark and Paul for leading the team in my absence and congratulations to Paul Fitzimons who was our Player of the Year.

Overall I feel we had an enjoyable and rewarding season and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2001-02.

WOMEN’S FIRST RESERVE/SENIORS

After the delight of winning the CCA Second Grade competition the previous season and then the disappointment of not gaining First Grade status, the 2000/01 season turned out to be a non-event. The team had trained once a fortnight through the winter in the Cashmere High School gym to brush up on fielding and other skills. CCA created a new grade at a level below First Grade, but the Sydenham Team was unable to test itself fully in this grade for the full season. This new grade played 45 over one day games and whilst the team did reasonably well and adjusted to the concept we sometimes let the concentration level slip at critical times and did not finish with the desired result. It was very encouraging to see some of the younger Second Grade players make the step up and adjust well to the higher level competition.

At the end of February the team was promoted to a new First grade competition along with BWU. We were not so keen to play in this competition as it would not have been the team we would have entered in First Grade and while we had good First Reserve players, some had no intention of wishing to play First Grade now or in the future. To these players, I admire you and your commitment to the club for making yourselves available against your wishes. During this latter competition the team was strengthened by the admission of Philippa Gerrish and Aimee Mason, Lincoln Academy players from Central Districts. We were unable to get a result against any of the current First Grade Teams, but we did beat BWU twice and finished the mini competition in 5th place.

Once again thanks must go to Kevin McGowan, Tracy Henderson, AC and Ivan Thomson for all their support and help and to Erin for her captaincy.

Congratulations to Jane Allison, Christchurch Red, Greer Hill, Captain Christchurch Black and Kelly Samson Christchurch Black who all played in the Under 17 Tournament in Ashburton in January.

WOMEN’S SECOND GRADE TEAM REPORT

Team: Jacqui Rose (capt), Kelly Samson, Fran Quinn, Melissa Barber, Mischale Falconer, Emma Wallbank, Lara Thompson, Amanda Ching, Amanda Crook, Pip Rawson, Emily Henry, Chani Trornop, Melissa Matthews.

This team played 3rd Grade during the previous season and made The move up to 2nd Grade with some trepidation. Their fears were not substantiated by the level of competition they faced however and they acquitted themselves very well, finishing in the top half of the competition. It is felt they could have done better but for the vagaries of the draw, which saw them playing against the eventual competition winners four times as opposed to playing some of the easier teams only once.

There were many outstanding performances during the season and the girls can be proud of the way they played and their commitment to the team. They proved that they could chase big targets and win (150 v Harewood, 170 v Marist) and that they could defend small targets by bowling out the opposition.

Most of the other teams we played relied totally on 4-5 players to bat and bowl while the remainder of the team occupied a space in the field and didn’t get a chance to star. Our team was different, in that everybody has an equal part to play and consequently everybody is happy.

Top performances include: Jacqui: who led the team very well and kept wickets well in addition to opening the batting with determination. Kelly: whose batting has improved markedly and who scored 332 runs, including three scores of over 50. Fran: who bowled outstandingly even though she had back problems. Emma: who was superb in the field, taking some stunning catches. Melissa B: excellent allround performances, including 6/22 from 10 overs. Mischale: who took the only hattrick of the season (all bowled). Chani: who discovered that she could bat and promptly began flogging boundaries to all parts of the ground. Emily: whose batting has improved markedly and is our specialist fielder when it comes to running out the opposition. Amanda Ching: whose improved performance with the bat gained her rep.honours. Amanda Crook: who never gives up in the field and whose bowling netted her three wickets against the comp. winners when no one else could get the breakthrough. Melissa M: who came through for us many times with her slow left- armers as well as with the bat during crucial times. Pip: outstanding all round talent and Lara: solid performances with bat and ball.

This very young team continues to improve and I am confident that they will be a part of the Sydenham scene for several more years to come.

Representative honours went to Kelly v/capt. Canty Black U14, Pip, v/capt, Canty. Red U14, Amanda Ching, Canty U14, Fran, Canty/Otago combined U17 along with Kelly.

The team and I thank the parents/supporters for their ongoing assistance and in particular Gerard Henry, Paul Ching , Ann Thomson , Ivan, Tracy, and Ian and the 1st Reserve team as well as the Sydenham C.C. and members for their help.

Kevin McGowan Coach.

3rd GRADE WOMEN TEAM REPORT

Team: Carmen Anderson, Melissa Barber, Mischale Falconer, Emily Henry, Marcia Nuttridge, Fran Quinn, Pip Rawson, Jackie Rose, Kelly Samson, Lara Thomson, Chani Trornop, Emma Wallbank, Amanda Ching.

Under the captaincy of Jackie, the girls played very well this season. Certainly, there were matches lost, but even in these the team tried they’re hardest. We were fortunate in that we had a strong and settled bowling attack and only rarely did we fail to bowl a side out. The fielding was frequently outstanding with several excellent catches taken and runouts effected with accurate throwing. The batting was solid throughout the season, with everybody contributing at some stage. If the recognised batsmen failed, the rest of the team fought very hard and with skill to reach winning targets. I do not choose to mention any players in particular as they all performed well and were very supportive of each other and the team morale therefore was very high. The team finished just outside the top 4 in the competition, which is a just reflection of their skills and the way they played. This is a very young team [aged between 12-15] and they were playing against opposition who were not only several years older but were also vastly more experienced. To perform as well as they did, individually and collectively reflects great credit. I was and am proud of them all. Their attitude and work ethic remained positive throughout the season and this translated into the good results they had. From this team, several players had the opportunity to play representative cricket at under 14 level. They were: Kelly, Jackie, Fran, Melissa, Lara and Pip. Naturally they all performed well and were a credit to themselves, their teams and the Sydenham C.C.

As punishment for giving me a hard time all through the season, they now have to put up with me next season.

Kevin McGowan [Coach]

JUNIOR SECTION

The Junior Committee for the 2000-2001 season was: Ivan Thomson, Yvette Southorn, Richard Barton, Tony Yeadon, Jos Bakker, Hugh Wilkinson, Carl Ahlfeld, Tracy Henderson, Ross Thomson, Kerry Constable.

The 2000-2001 season saw the number of junior teams stabilize at 36 making Sydenham the largest junior club in Christchurch. In addition the Club entered three junior girls teams and joined with Southern Districts and Halswell in forming six secondary schools teams, making a total of 45 teams managed by the Junior Section. The Club is fortunate to have a dedicated committee prepared to put so much time and effort into ensuring that the children are well supervised, have the opportunity to develop their skills, and become involved in a range of social activities. It was particularly pleasing to see an increase in the number of girls playing cricket and special mention should be made of Tracy Henderson, a former member of the Club, who developed and implemented our junior coaching program. Tracy has resigned as coaching coordinator after six years on the Committee and she will be sorely missed.

Richard Barton our Treasure has done a great job once again in managing the raffle and keeping our books in order. He was also instrumental in setting up the junior section as an incorporated society.

Because of the rapid growth in teams, the junior committee was enlarged significantly and a grade management structure put in place to improve communication and overall organisation. This has worked well and lessened the demands on me as convenor.

Sponsorship continued to play an important role in the development of junior cricket. The junior committee would like to acknowledge the support of the Friends of Sydenham in making possible the fund raising raffle facilitating our access too much needed funding. This support together with numerous donations funded the following:

· a coaching program run by Tracy Henderson and Kevin McGowan; · new practice facilities at Cashmere H.S.; · social functions for coaches, parents and children · an excellent prize giving · financial assistance for parents to gain coaching qualifications. · player of the day trophies and end of season awards.

Sydenham players continue to be selected for the Canterbury primary schools teams with several others making zone teams. This year over 20 players were selected for various representative teams including Canterbury Primary Schools, and Under age Canterbury secondary schools teams, both boys and girls.

Canterbury Under 17 David Crosbie Dean Comyns Canterbury Under 15 Sam Wilkinson Canterbury Under 14 Matt Golding Christchurch Primary Schools Matt Golding Adam Chivers

Canterbury Under 17 Girls Greer Hill, Kelly Samson, Jane Allison Canterbury Under 17 Canterbury/Otago combination Fran Quinn, Amanda Ching Canterbury Under 14 Girls Amanda Ching Kelly Samson Pip Rawson

The talent that now exists among our youngsters must be nurtured for the long-term survival of our club and cricket in general, and we look forward to senior members of the Club increasing their contribution in this area.

The Committee would like to thank Andrew Chisnall and Dave Gallop in particular for their continued support this year.

OUR THANKS TO BILL THOMSON WITH ASSISTANCE FROM BERT WALKER FOR ORGANISING THE RAFFLE.IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THIS IS CONTINUED AS IT THE ONE ACTIVITY WHICH INVOLVES ALL CLUB MEMBERS. IN ADDITION IT PROVIDED $5700 FOR THE JUNIOR SECTION. OUR THANKS TO THOSE WHO DONATED PRIZES. UNDER EXPENDITURE IS $5126 FIRST AID KITS. THESE KITS WILL BE PROVIDED FOR ALL TEAMS IN THE COMMING SEASON AND WILL ALSO BE USED AS RAFFLE PRIZES.

THE COMMITTEE IS CONFIDENT THAT THE COACHING ACTIVITES INCLUDING ALL GROUND COSTS AS WELL AS THE RESITING OF THE NUMBER ONE PITCH CAN BE MET. IT IS ALSO THE CONTINUING AIM OF THE TRUST TO INCREASE THE CAPITAL BASE AND THAT ALL YEARS ARE TO BE FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT. WE ARE MINDFUL THAT SOME EXPENDITURE IS NEEDED ON THE LOUNGE AND THIS IS BEING EXAMINED. THE TRUST IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FUNDING OF SOUTHERN DISTRICTS AS PART OF THE AMALGAMATION. IT IS THE INTENTION TO INCLUDE THIS IN NEXT YEARS REPORT.

EACH YEAR BRINGS MORE CHALLENGES FROM A FINANCIAL PERSPECTIVE. WE ARE CONFIDENTLY LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING THESE CHALLANGES AND ONCE AGAIN ACKNOWLEDGES THE FANTASTIC SUPPORT OF OUR SPONSORS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE COMING SEASON AND TRUST THAT IT WILL BE A SUCCESSFUL ONE FOR THE CLUB.
