PACE OF PLAY

Simi Hills Men’s Golf Club Pace of Play Policy Our pace of play policy is intended to keep everyone in the tournament playing at the same pace. It is not fair for the early groups to finish in 4 to 4.15, and the last groups to finish at 5 or more hours. There needs to be more urgency to get caught up when you fall out of position. Many groups in the mid- dle of our tournaments fall from a half a hole to a full hole or more behind, and this needs to be correct- ed. The board believes the possibility of penalty strokes being assessed will encourage players to focus on pace of play and catch up if they fall behind. Our tournament scorecards have the expected finishing time under each hole. If everyone follows these guidelines, all should enjoy good pace of play equally. The policy is straight forward; if you fall behind, catch up. If you arrive to the tee on a par three and there is no group on the green, you are behind. If you arrive to the tee of a par four and the group in front of you is on the green, you are behind. If you arrive to the tee of a par five and the group in front of you is hitting their third shots, you are behind. It is at this point that you need to make an urgent at- tempt to get caught up. It is every single golfer’s responsibility to keep themselves in position and then help other players in their group if time permits. It is not the groups’ responsibility to look for your ball if your group is falling behind, nor is it your responsibility to look for others’ lost balls. The new rule is three minutes to look for your ball and three minutes goes by fast. If you are behind and you hit an er- rant shot, you should not expect the playing partners to help you as they must hit their balls in a timely fashion and try to get back into position. It is your responsibility and yours alone to keep up with the group in front of you. Golf course professionals / staff will be driving around with color coded cards. If your group is shown a green card (good), your group is in position. If your group is shown a yellow card (falling be- hind), you have been warned and should immediately pick up your pace to regain your position. Your group will have 20 minutes to close the gap. When the marshal comes around again, after your group has received a yellow card and you are not back into position, a red card (penalty) will be shown. This indicates that your group has failed to get back in position in a timely manner and you may be assessed a penalty of 1 stroke. If your group is shown a second red card, a second penalty of 2 strokes may assessed. Penalties will not be assessed on the spot. The course marshal will provide the records to the tournament director, and the tournament director and/or board will be responsible for assigning penalty strokes or issuing warnings. If your group receives a warning, and it is clear that only one player in the group is responsible for the delay or some other mitigating circumstance exists, the marshal may choose to split your group into 2 twosomes to alleviate the issue. This information will be provided to the tournament director, who may consider taking other corrective actions including suspensions from tournament play for re- peat offenders. Please note that if you get confrontational, verbal or otherwise you will be held in viola- tion of Club By-Laws and subject to disciplinary action including disqualification or sus- pension from tournament play. By most member’s opinion, the Victoria Lakes Course is the better of the two courses at that facility. Multiple large ponds (or small lakes), make it more scenic than the Vineyard Course with a view of the Channel Islands from the 13th tee box. Victoria Lakes is rat- ed at 72.5 with a slope of 130 from the blue tees and 70.3 with a slope of 126 from the white tees.

Unlike the rest of the country, we don’t have “March Winds” but instead October—through February winds. The ferocity of the Simi winds tapers off in March. It doesn’t stop so tapering off is good. Go to SHMGC.org and signup electronically for this month’s tournament.

A new, actually old but back again, course for this season will be Tierra Rejada. Right on Tierra Rejada Road and the 23 freeway. This hillside built course made it through change in ownership and has rebounded from that period where it’s future was unknown. Reports are very positive about it’s playability. One thing for sure, you cannot beat the views from the tops of those hills above the Road. From the green for the 4th hole, you have a 340 panorama view from the Reagan Library to the Pacific and over to the Topa Topa Mountains above Ojai.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Team Play is underway with two matches played and we are 2-0. The first match against Olivas Links was at home with 25 mph winds. Every member of our team came to play and with windy conditions and fast Simi Greens. The edge went to the home team. We won by a score of 44 to 4. Our second match was at Olivas Links and our Team Play horses rode the team to another win. The final score was 31 to 17. Our next match is at home against Santa Barbara on Feb. 1st. On the top of our schedule on our website there is a link to the Team Play Portal. We are in group 2 if you want to keep up.

Membership is up to 247 members. With just two tournaments played this year we have 109 members that have already played in one of our events.

Our full schedule is up on our website and we have our pocket calendars for 2020 available at our tournaments and general meetings until they run out. New courses this year are Tukwet Legends and Tierra Rejada. We are bringing back La Purisima which is always tough and can have you wondering after the round, why did I take this game up? It’s still a favorite of many and so it is back on the cal- endar.

After daylight savings we will start our Horse Races back up before our monthly meetings.
