On the BU Horizon.....a publication of the Division of Student Life HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES Freshman Mass Meeting Wednesday, Oct. 26th 10 p.m. @ the Ferrell Center. Start off this year's Homecoming celebration by coming to the Ferrell Center and learning about the traditions of Baylor! Former Baylor Football head coach Grant Teaff will speak about the Baylor spirit and Neil Knighton will share the story of Baylor's Immortal Ten. At the conclusion of the event, the freshman class will be entrusted with the Eternal Flame, representing Baylor's spirit, to guard and protect until the Bonfire is lit from it on Friday night. Build the Bonfire Wednesday, Oct. 26th, 11 p.m., immediately after Freshman Mass Meeting at the parking lot between Ferrell Center and Baylor Ballpark. After hearing about Baylor's traditions at Freshman Mass Meeting, come be a part of Baylor history as the class of 2009 builds this year's Homecoming Bonfire. For decades, it has been the freshman class who has stepped up to this task, so come out and continue it by staying around at the Ferrell Center. The most devoted will have a chance to light the Bonfire Friday night at the pep rally! Freshman Camp Wednesday, October 26, immediately following Mass Meeting through Friday, October 28 afternoon at the bonfire site. Guard the Eternal Flame next to the Bonfire and take advantage of the new Freshman Camp! There will be pizza, drinks, games, and fun during all hours of the night (and day). The guarding of the flame will continue non-stop from Wednesday night through Friday afternoon, so come and camp out by the bonfire and make it a great fellowship with friends! Extravaganza!! Friday, October 28, 6 p.m. @ the parking lot between Ferrell Center and Baylor Ballpark. Friday night the parking lot will be transformed into an event that Baylor Homecoming has yet to see – "Extravaganza!" Starting at 6 p.m., a carnival atmosphere will take over, complete with inflatables, hot air balloons, a Ferris wheel, and alumni reunion tents. The event will be free and is come-and-go. If you come by car, please park at either the 3rd Street or Dutton Avenue parking garages, as parking at the Ferrell Center will be tight with all the out-of-town guests. Free shuttles will be available between the parking garages and the Extravaganza site through out the evening. Check www.baylor.edu/homecoming for more information. Homecoming Cabaret Friday, October 28, 8 p.m. @ Jones Theater in Hooper Schaefer Fine Arts Center. Forty years of Cabaret equals tradition! Attend the annual Homecoming Show, featuring Baylor Showtime with guest artist Deborah Williamson and enjoy the show of singing and dancing. Call 710-1121 for tickets. Pep Rally & Bonfire Lighting Friday, October 28, 9 p.m. @ parking lot between Ferrell Center and Baylor Ballpark. Come support the Baylor Bear football team as they get pumped up for their game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders! Coach Guy Morriss will be there with the team. Immediately following the pep rally, the Homecoming Bonfire will be lit. Check www.baylor.edu/homecoming for more information. Homecoming Parade Saturday, October 29, 8 a.m. @ 5th Street on campus. Come watch the world's largest collegiate parade march through downtown and campus. The procession will reach the Baylor campus at around 8 a.m. on 5th street. Check www.baylor.edu/homecoming for more information. Baylor Football vs. Texas Tech Saturday, October 29, 11:30 a.m. @ Floyd Casey Stadium. The Bears return home to Floyd Casey to take on 17th ranked Texas Tech. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net. Snicker's Touchdown Alley will open at 9:30 AM and will feature live music, games, autographs, and the pre-game radio show! This weeks guest in the First National Bank of Central Texas Champions Tent is football great Dennis Gentry! There is free parking for students in the grass lot off of Dutton in the Best Buy Student Lot and Free hot dogs will be available for students courtesy of HEB! Students can catch the shuttle from the SUB that begins running two hours prior to game time. ************************* Lifeguard Class October 24, 25, 26 and 29 in the evenings during the week and all day on Saturday. Any student interested in becoming a certified lifeguard is welcome to attend a lifeguard certification class this month. The cost is $75 if you will be working for Baylor Aquatics and $150 if you will not be working for Baylor Aquatics. For additional information, please contact Ben Robert at 710-3530. Leadership Lecture Series Thursday, October 27, 5-6 p.m. McLane Student Life Center, Room 308. “Leadership and Public Life” lecture sponsored by The Academy for Leader Development & Civic Engagement and the Freshman Leadership Organization. Featured speaker is The Honorable Ken Paxton, State Representative for District 70, Texas House of Representatives, who is a Baylor graduate. He served at Baylor as a Student Body President, founder of Steppin’ Out, and founder of Freshman Leadership Organization. Teach For America Sunday, October 30--deadline to apply. Recruiting top graduating college seniors from all backgrounds and majors to be paid, full time teachers in a rural or urban school district for two years. Apply at www.teachforamerica.org.
