Bibliography………………………………………………………………….pg 36 2 Introduction and teaching suggestions The purpose of this teaching project is to guide Latin III students through Petronius' Satyricon with ease. By Latin III, the students should be reading unaltered texts in Latin. It is important that the students read texts written by Romans, instead of teachers. Students can learn information about culture and language from reading the words of the Romans. This project is designed to help young students navigate their way through an authentic text. This unit has been designed to take about 12 days. The lesson plans are laid out for group work. This Petronius project lends itself to be incorporated into a larger Roman author unit. I incorporate Petronius as one of the six Romans authors whom I expose my students during a semester. This unit could be longer. Students could translate and discuss only one page a day with daily review of the previous page. Using the suggested extension activities would also extend the unit. It is important to read and discuss the introduction with the students in order to familiarize them with the time period, author, and genre of the Satyricon.

												  The 'Wild' Sheep of BritainThe 'Wild' Sheep of Britain </. C. Greig and A. B. Cooper Primitive breeds of sheep and goats, such as the Ronaldsay sheep of Orkney, could be in danger of disappearing with the present rapid decline in pastoral farming. The authors, both members of the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources in Edinburgh University, point out that, quite apart from their historical and cultural interest, these breeds have an important part to play in modern livestock breeding, which needs a constant infusion of new genes from unimproved breeds to get the benefits of hybrid vigour. Moreover these primitive breeds are able to use the poor land and live in the harsh environment which no modern hybrid sheep can stand. Recent work on primitive breeds of sheep and goats in Scotland has drawn attention not only to the necessity for conserving them, but also to the fact that there is no organisation taking a direct scientific in- terest in them. Primitive livestock strains are the jetsam of the Agricul- tural Revolution, and they tend to survive in Europe's peripheral regions. The sheep breeds are the best examples, such as the sheep of Ushant, off the Brittany coast, the Ronaldsay sheep of Orkney, the Shetland sheep, the Soay sheep of St Kilda, and the Manx Loaghtan breed. Presumably all have survived because of their isolation in these remote and usually infertile areas. A 'primitive breed' is a livestock breed which has remained relatively unchanged through the last 200 years of modern animal-breeding techniques. The word 'primitive' is perhaps unfortunate, since it implies qualities which are obsolete or undeveloped.

Wild and feral pigs inhabit wide tracts of the southern and mid-western United States, where they thrive in a variety of habitats. They form matriarchal social groups, sleep in communal nests, and maintain close family bonds into adulthood. Science has helped shed light on the depths of the remarkable cognitive abilities of pigs, and fosters a greater appreciation for these often maligned and misunderstood animals. Background Pigs—also called swine or hogs—belong to the Suidae family1 and along with cattle, sheep, goats, camels, deer, giraffes, and hippopotamuses, are part of the order Artiodactyla, or even-toed ungulates.2 Domesticated pigs are descendants of the wild boar (Sus scrofa),3,4 which originally ranged through North Africa, Asia and Europe.5 Pigs were first domesticated approximately 9,000 years ago.6 The wild boar became extinct in Britain in the 17th century as a result of hunting and habitat destruction, but they have since been reintroduced.7,8 Feral pigs (domesticated animals who have returned to a wild state) are now found worldwide in temperate and tropical regions such as Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia and on island nations, 9 such as Hawaii.10 True wild pigs are not native to the New World.11 When Christopher Columbus landed in Cuba in 1493, he brought the first domestic pigs—pigs who subsequently spread throughout the Spanish West Indies (Caribbean).12 In 1539, Spanish explorers brought pigs to the mainland when they settled in Florida.

In females one X chromosome is transcriptionally silenced through a variety of epigenetic modifications including DNA methylation. Most X-linked genes are subject to X-chromosome inactivation and only expressed from the active X chromosome. On the inactive X chromosome, the CpG island promoters of genes subject to X-chromosome inactivation are methylated in their promoter regions, while genes which escape from X- chromosome inactivation have unmethylated CpG island promoters on both the active and inactive X chromosomes. The first objective of this thesis was to determine if the DNA methylation of CpG island promoters could be used to accurately predict X chromosome inactivation status. The second objective was to use DNA methylation to predict X-chromosome inactivation status in a variety of tissues. A comparison of blood, muscle, kidney and neural tissues revealed tissue-specific X-chromosome inactivation, in which 12% of genes escaped from X-chromosome inactivation in some, but not all, tissues. X-linked DNA methylation analysis of placental tissues predicted four times higher escape from X-chromosome inactivation than in any other tissue. Despite the hypomethylation of repetitive elements on both the X chromosome and the autosomes, no changes were detected in the frequency or intensity of placental Cot-1 holes.

It exemplifies this with the domestication and current use of the pig (Sus domesticus). After a brief review of the process of domestication, the paper looks at modern production and the increase in concerns for animal health, welfare and performance and the link to food for human consumption. The paper elaborates on the extreme nature of intensive pig production systems and the role that design plays in their operations. It points out the prototypical nature of the modern pigs’ evolution and the means by which man contributes his own prototypes to these changes. It pays some attention to the often conflicting concerns of efficient production and animal welfare. It exemplifies this in a brief study of 2 design products - floor systems and feeding systems, and through the use of a Holmesian type puzzle, shows the complex interrelationships of the two products. The paper emphasises the need for designers to avoid extreme anthropomorphism, adopt whenever possible a zoocentric and salutogenic (health oriented) approach and remain fully aware that all technical decisions are also likely to be ethical decisions. The paper concludes with some suggestions of what might be incorporated into the curriculum of product design courses.

INTRODUCTION: Drosophila melanogaster is used extensively in genetic breeding experiments. It is an ideal testing organism for geneticists because it has a short life cycle, exhibits great variability in inherited characteristics, and may be conveniently raised in the laboratory to produce large numbers of offspring. Drosophila can be used in genetic crosses to demonstrate Mendelian inheritance as well as the unusual inheritance of genes located on the X chromosome (“sex linkage”). The organism is also useful for demonstrating the principles of genetic mapping, which you will be exploring in this first experiment. To do this, you will be performing a cross with real flies to demonstrate the principles behind genetic mapping. Your success in these experiments will depend greatly on your ability to properly handle the flies and to accurately observe their characteristics.

Tired of being exploited for human gain, the animals—who have human characteristics such as the power of speech—agree to create a new and fairer society. The novel reads like a fairy tale, and Orwell originally subtitled it as one, but it is also a satire containing a message about world politics and especially the former Soviet Union. In a satire, the writer attacks a serious issue by presenting it in a ridiculous, funny way. Orwell uses satire to expose what he saw as the myth of Soviet Socialism. The novel tells a story that people of all ages can understand, but it also tells us a second story— that of the real-life Revolution. Since the Bolshevik Revolution of the early 1900s, the former Soviet Union had captured the attention of the world with its socialist experiment. This form of government had some supporters in Britain and the United States, but Orwell was against this system.
