    HEAVY METAL: THE NCFAA NEWSLETTER (NOV. 13, 2020) Farewell to The Golden Boy: Paul Hornung (1935-2020) Paul Vernon Hornung, one of the all-time great college and pro football players from the 1950s and 60s, passed away today in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., at age 84 after a long battle with dementia. Hornung is survived by his wife of 41 years, Angela Hornung. Legendary Green Bay Packer Football Coach Vince Lombardi once called Hornung, “The most versatile man ever to play the game.” Nicknamed “The Golden Boy” due to his blond hair and handsome features, Hornung won the 1956 Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame as a quarterback, then was a star halfback and placekicker for the Green Bay Packers team that ruled the NFL in the 1960s. Hornung is a member of the college and pro football halls of fame and the namesake of the Paul Hornung Award, presented annually to the most versatile player in major college football. The number one pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 1957 NFL Draft, Hornung became an all-pro halfback in the 1960s who could run, pass, catch, block and kick. The zenith of his colorful NFL tenure came during three exceptional seasons in 1959, 1960 and 1961 when Hornung led the NFL in scoring two of those years and finished second the other year by one point. In 1960, he capped by a stellar season when he scored a record 176 points in 12 games on 15 touchdowns, 15 field goals and 41 extra points – a mark that would stand for nearly 46 years.

    2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List Unveiled

    July 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Steve Richardson [email protected] 214-870-6516 2017 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY WATCH LIST UNVEILED DALLAS (FWAA) — The 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List boasts 103 defensive standouts from all 10 Division I FBS conferences, including four returning players from last season’s Football Writers Association of America All-America team. Christian Wilkins, a defensive tackle for defending national champion Clemson, and Florida State defensive back Tavarus McFadden are the only 2016 FWAA first-teamers on the list. Two other 2016 second-teamers – Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver and Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser – are included along with NIU defensive back Shawun Lurry, a 2015 First-Team FWAA All-America player. The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 20 players on the watch list, followed by the Big Ten (16), SEC (14), Pac-12 (13), Big 12 (11), American Athletic (10), Sun Belt (6), Mountain West (5), Independents (3), Mid-American (3) and Conference USA (2). The list includes 30 defensive backs, 29 linebackers, 25 defensive ends and 19 defensive tackles, all vying for the award representing college football’s best defensive player. Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the course of the season. As in previous seasons, the FWAA will announce a National Defensive Player of the Week each Tuesday throughout the season. If not already on the watch list, each week’s honored player will be added at that time.     Indoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida claims top spot in men’s indoor track: At the end of the two-day gamut of ups and downs that is the Division I NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Champion- ships, Florida coach Mike Holloway had a hard time thinking of anything that went wrong for the Gators. “I don’t know,” Holloway said. “The worst thing that happened to me was that I had a stomachache for a couple of days.” There’s no doubt Holloway left the Randal Tyson Track Center feeling better on Saturday night. That’s because a near-fl awless performance by the top-ranked Gators re- sulted in the school’s fi rst indoor national championship. Florida had come close before, fi nishing second three times in Holloway’s seven previous years as head coach. “It’s been a long journey and I’m just so proud of my staff . I’m so proud of my athletes and everybody associated with the program,” Holloway said. “I’m almost at a loss for words; that’s how happy I am. “It’s just an amazing feeling, an absolutely amazing feeling.” Florida began the day with 20 points, four behind host Arkansas, but had loads of chances to score and didn’t waste time getting started. After No. 2 Oregon took the lead with 33 points behind a world-record performance in the heptathlon from Ashton Eaton and a solid showing in the mile, Florida picked up seven points in the 400-meter dash.
