Simon Donaldson and Andrew Wiles will serve as editors-in-chief, while I will serve as managing editor. Associate editors are Brian Conrad, Ingrid Daubechies, Charles Fefferman, János Kollár, Andrei Okounkov, David Morrison, Cliff Taubes, Peter Ozsváth, and Karen Smith. The Monograph Series publishes Letter from the president selected expositions of recent developments, both in emerging areas and in older subjects transformed by new insights or unifying ideas. The next volume in the series will be Ricci Flow and the Poincaré Conjecture, by John Morgan and Gang Tian. Their book will appear in the summer of 2007. In related publishing news, the Institute has had the complete record of the Göttingen seminars of Felix Klein, 1872–1912, digitized and made available on James Carlson. -

We also establish a relation between finite type knot invariants in 3-manifolds and these in R3. As an application we obtain the existence of non-trivial finite type invariants for knots in irreducible 3-manifolds. 0 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved 0. INTRODUCTION The theory of quantum groups gives a systematic way of producing families of polynomial invariants, for knots and links in [w3 or S3 (see for example [18,24]). In particular, the Jones polynomial [12] and its generalizations [6,13], can be obtained that way. All these Jones-type invariants are defined as state models on a knot diagram or as traces of a braid group representation. On the other hand Vassiliev [25,26], introduced vast families of numerical knot invariants (Jinite type invariants), by studying the topology of the space of knots in [w3. The compu- tation of these invariants, involves in an essential way the computation of related invariants for special knotted graphs (singular knots). It is known [l-3], that after a suitable change of variable the coefficients of the power series expansions of the Jones-type invariants, are of Jinite type. -

Newsletter Volume 6, Issue 11, November 2016 Mechanical Aspire Achievements in Sports, Projects, Industry, Research and Education All About Nobel Prize- Part 35 The Breakthrough Prize Inspired by Nobel Prize, there have been many other prizes similar to that, both in amount and in purpose. One such prize is the Breakthrough Prize. The Breakthrough Prize is backed by Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and Google co-founder Sergey Brin, among others. The Breakthrough Prize was founded by Brin and Anne Wojcicki, who runs genetic testing firm 23andMe, Chinese businessman Jack Ma, and Russian entrepreneur Yuri Milner and his wife Julia. The Breakthrough Prizes honor important, primarily recent, achievements in the categories of Fundamental Physics, Life Sciences and Mathematics . The prizes were founded in 2012 by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Jack Ma and Cathy Zhang. Committees of previous laureates choose the winners from candidates nominated in a process that’s online and open to the public. Laureates receive $3 million each in prize money. They attend a televised award ceremony designed to celebrate their achievements and inspire the next generation of scientists. As part of the ceremony schedule, they also engage in a program of lectures and discussions. Those that go on to make fresh discoveries remain eligible for future Breakthrough Prizes. The Trophy The Breakthrough Prize trophy was created by Olafur Eliasson. “The whole idea for me started out with, ‘Where do these great ideas come from? What type of intuition started the trajectory that eventually becomes what we celebrate today?’” Like much of Eliasson's work, the sculpture explores the common ground between art and science. -

Department of Mathematics The Department of Mathematics seeks to maintain its top ranking in mathematics research and education in the United States. The department is a key part of MIT’s educational mission at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and produces the most sought-after young researchers. Key to the department’s success is recruitment of the best faculty members, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students in an ever more competitive environment. The department strives to be diverse at all levels in terms of race, gender, and ethnicity. It continues to serve the varied needs of its graduate students, undergraduate students majoring in mathematics, and the broader MIT community. Awards and Honors The faculty received numerous distinctions this year. Professor Victor Kac received the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement, for “groundbreaking contributions to Lie Theory and its applications to Mathematics and Mathematical Physics.” Larry Guth (together with Netz Katz of the California Institute of Technology) won the Clay Mathematics Institute Research Award. Tomasz Mrowka was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and William Minicozzi was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Alexei Borodin received the 2015 Loève Prize in Probability, given by the University of California, Berkeley, in recognition of outstanding research in mathematical probability by a young researcher. Alan Edelman received the 2015 Babbage Award, given at the IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, for exceptional contributions to the field of parallel processing. Bonnie Berger was elected vice president of the International Society for Computational Biology. -
