Qiushi Academy, the predecessor of Zhejiang University, was founded in 1897, one of the earliest modern institutes for higher education established in China. In 1928, the academy was named National Zhejiang University. During the war time in 1940s, Zhejiang University moved to Zunyi, Meitan and other places in succession and stayed in West China for seven years. In 1946, Zhejiang University relocated back to Hangzhou. In 1952, due to the restructuring of national universities, Zhejiang University underwent a reshuffling of disciplines. Some departments merged into other universities and Chinese Academy of Science. The remaining departments were divided and evolved into 4 specialized higher education institutions, namely former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University. In 1998, the four universities sharing the same ancestor merged to form the modern Zhejiang University with the mission to 1 become a world-leading university. In its 120-year history, Zhejiang University has always committed to cultivating talent with excellence, advancing science and technology, serving social development, and promoting mankind culture, with the spirit best manifested in the university motto “Seeking the Truth and Pioneering New Trails”. Zhejiang University is a comprehensive research university with distinctive features and a national as well as international impact. Research at Zhejiang University spans 12 academic disciplines, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, art, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and etc. With 7 faculties and 36 colleges/schools/departments, Zhejiang University has 14 primary and 21 secondary national leading academic disciplines. A large number of outstanding talents have turned out in the history of Zhejiang University. Advancing with the times, Zhejiang University paces the whole nation in educational reforms. Rich campus culture, advanced teaching facilities and wide spreading international exchanges provide favorable prerequisite for student training and development. Zhejiang University focuses on assiduous study and research, and science and technological innovation. It has launched a number of world’s leading research platforms, and gathered experts, scholars and high-level research groups in various disciplines. In recent years, Zhejiang University has maintained the leading ranking in China, including publications, patents and etc., and has gained abundant important achievements in science, technology, humanities and social sciences. Zhejiang University always takes initiative in catering for national and regional needs, and exerts itself to become an influential high-level source of innovation and a pool of talents. In 2015, research fund at Zhejiang University reached RMB 3,316 million. As of Jan. 2016, there are more than 47,339 full-time students enrolled at Zhejiang University, including approximately 14,289 3 graduate students, 9,153 PhD candidates, and 23,897 undergraduates. In addition, 5,849 overseas students are currently enrolled at Zhejiang University. Among its approximate 3,562 standing faculty members, 1,498 faculty members have title of professor. Zhejiang University has also gathered a leading teaching staff including 15 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 18 members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 76 experts in State "1000-elite Programs", 41 chief scientists of national 973 projects, 113 Chair Professors in Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 119 scholars awarded with National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. With seven campuses, namely Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining campus, Zhejiang University encompasses an area of 5,570,408 square meters with school buildings covering 2,287,856 square meters of floor space. The university library holds a collection of more than 6.83 million volumes. In addition, Zhejiang University has 7 high-level affiliated hospitals. After over one century of exploration and development, Zhejiang University has become one of China's top national universities with its solid research foundation, substantial technical strength and distinctive features. As a leading comprehensive and research-oriented university, Zhejiang University holds its worldwide respect and is in the first batch of memberships of Project 211 (a project of 106 (as of 2007) key universities and colleges in the 21st century initiated in 1995 by the Ministry of Education of China) and Project 985 (a constructive project for founding world-class universities in the 21st century conducted by the government of China). The Graduate Education at ZJU was initiated in 1927 and was formally established in December 1984. It was one of the first experimental graduate schools authorized by State Council. In February 1995, Zhejiang University along with other ten universities, received awards in an experimental graduate school evaluation 7 organized by the Former State Education Commission, after which the graduate school was officially authorized. Today's ZJU has become a national comprehensive key university whose fields of study cover eleven branches of learning, namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, medicine, engineering, agriculture and management. Currently, the university is entitled to confer master degrees in 312 programs and doctoral degrees in 276 programs. Zhejiang University makes great efforts to develop its first-level faculty and facilities. At present, there are 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 18 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 41 chief scientists of "973 Project", 120 professors of the "Cheung Kong Scholar's Program", 116 winners of National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. There are over 2400 doctoral advisors and over 3937 master instructors among its full-time professors and associate professors. Besides, Zhejiang University has set up 54 post-doctor stations, 14 state key (specialized) laboratories and 6 national engineering (technology) research centers. In addition, there are 3 state key research bases of humanities and social 8 sciences, 8 National Basic Research & Teaching Personnel Training Bases, 4 National Teaching Bases for Basic Engineering Courses, 2 National Personnel Training Bases, and 41 provincial & ministerial - level key (open) laboratories at the university. Excellent graduate advisors and the state-of-the-art research facilities provide a solid foundation for high-level graduate education. Zhejiang University focuses on a global Graduate education and has been working hard to set up a worldwide education network along with global research. It has agreements with many world-class universities as partner institutions. ZJU encourages students and its faculty to develop international perspectives. As of 2015, 1854 students had taken part in official research collaborations, exchange programs, joint education and international academic conferences over the world. There were also 332 international graduate students (137 doctoral students, 195 master graduate students) admitted in the 2015 academic year. Zhejiang University has cultivated a pool of superior talents in the light of precise "Qiushi" (with the literal meaning of "seeking truth" in Chinese) learning style, and has made great achievements 9 through innovative education and research systems.
