Zhejiang University Overview

Located in the historical and picturesque city of Hangzhou,

Zhejiang University is a prestigious institution for higher education with lasting history. Qiushi Academy, the predecessor of Zhejiang

University, was founded in 1897, one of the earliest modern institutes for higher education established in China. In 1928, the academy was named National Zhejiang University. During the war time in 1940s,

Zhejiang University moved to Zunyi, Meitan and other places in succession and stayed in West China for seven years. In 1946,

Zhejiang University relocated back to Hangzhou. In 1952, due to the restructuring of national universities, Zhejiang University underwent a reshuffling of disciplines. Some departments merged into other universities and Chinese Academy of Science. The remaining departments were divided and evolved into 4 specialized higher education institutions, namely former Zhejiang University, Hangzhou

University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical

University. In 1998, the four universities sharing the same ancestor merged to form the modern Zhejiang University with the mission to

become a world-leading university. In its 120-year history, Zhejiang

University has always committed to cultivating talent with excellence, advancing science and technology, serving social development, and promoting mankind culture, with the spirit best manifested in the university motto “Seeking the Truth and Pioneering New Trails”.

Zhejiang University is a comprehensive research university with distinctive features and a national as well as international impact.

Research at Zhejiang University spans 12 academic disciplines, covering philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, art, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and etc.

With 7 faculties and 36 colleges/schools/departments, Zhejiang

As of Jan. 2016, there are more than 47,339 full-time students enrolled at Zhejiang University, including approximately 14,289

graduate students, 9,153 PhD candidates, and 23,897 undergraduates.

In addition, 5,849 overseas students are currently enrolled at Zhejiang

University. Among its approximate 3,562 standing faculty members,

1,498 faculty members have title of professor. Zhejiang University has also gathered a leading teaching staff including 15 members of

Chinese Academy of Sciences, 18 members of Chinese Academy of

Engineering, 76 experts in State "1000-elite Programs", 41 chief scientists of national 973 projects, 113 Chair Professors in Chang

Jiang Scholars Program, and 119 scholars awarded with National

Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. With seven campuses, namely Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang,

Zhoushan and Haining campus, Zhejiang University encompasses an area of 5,570,408 square meters with school buildings covering

2,287,856 square meters of floor space. The university library holds a collection of more than 6.83 million volumes. In addition, Zhejiang

Graduate School Overview

Zhejiang University was founded as one of the earliest institutions of modern higher education, and dates back to the formation of Qiushi Academy in 1897 by Chinese independently.

After over one century of exploration and development, Zhejiang

University has become one of China's top national universities with its solid research foundation, substantial technical strength and distinctive features. As a leading comprehensive and research-oriented university, Zhejiang University holds its worldwide respect and is in the first batch of memberships of Project 211 (a project of 106 (as of 2007) key universities and colleges in the 21st century initiated in 1995 by the Ministry of Education of China) and

Project 985 (a constructive project for founding world-class universities in the 21st century conducted by the government of

China). The Graduate Education at ZJU was initiated in 1927 and was formally established in December 1984. It was one of the first experimental graduate schools authorized by State Council. In

February 1995, Zhejiang University along with other ten universities, received awards in an experimental graduate school evaluation

organized by the Former State Education Commission, after which the graduate school was officially authorized.

Today's ZJU has become a national comprehensive key university whose fields of study cover eleven branches of learning, namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, medicine, engineering, agriculture and management.

Currently, the university is entitled to confer master degrees in 312 programs and doctoral degrees in 276 programs. Zhejiang University makes great efforts to develop its first-level faculty and facilities. At present, there are 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of

Sciences, 18 academicians of the Chinese Academy of

Engineering, 41 chief scientists of "973 Project", 120 professors of the "Cheung Kong Scholar's Program", 116 winners of National Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. There are over 2400 doctoral advisors and over 3937 master instructors among its full-time professors and associate professors. Besides, Zhejiang University has set up 54 post-doctor stations, 14 state key (specialized) laboratories and 6 national engineering (technology) research centers. In addition, there are 3 state key research bases of humanities and social

sciences, 8 National Basic Research & Teaching Personnel Training

Zhejiang University focuses on a global Graduate education and has been working hard to set up a worldwide education network along with global research. It has agreements with many world-class universities as partner institutions. ZJU encourages students and its faculty to develop international perspectives. As of 2015, 1854 students had taken part in official research collaborations, exchange programs, joint education and international academic conferences over the world. There were also 332 international graduate students

(137 doctoral students, 195 master graduate students) admitted in the

2015 academic year.

Zhejiang University has cultivated a pool of superior talents in the light of precise "Qiushi" (with the literal meaning of "seeking truth" in Chinese) learning style, and has made great achievements

through innovative education and research systems. From 1999 to

2016, Zhejiang University has conferred 18,900 doctoral degrees, and

84,470 master degrees in total. There are 48 doctoral dissertations being prized for the "National Hundred Excellent Doctoral

Dissertations" Award, and 93 doctoral dissertations being prized for

Nominations. A large number of students have been involved in top quality research and these graduates are headed towards a great future ahead of their counterparts. Nowadays, there are 23,073 registered graduates, of which there are approximately 8,931 doctoral students and 14,142 master students. In addition, there are over 9,000 graduates pursuing professional degrees in part-time courses.

Zhejiang University enrolls over 1,956 doctoral students and 5,050 graduate students in 2015.

Department of Chemistry Overview

The Department of Chemistry at Zhejiang University is one of the recognized and leading institutions in China. It has a long history.

Its predecessor can be dated back to Qiushi Academy and Yuying

Academy in 1897. On one hand, Qiushi Academy was developed to be Zhejiang Tertiary Institute in 1912 and the Department of

Chemistry was established in 1915, which became the Department of

Chemistry at Zhejiang University in 1928. On the other hand, Yuying

Academy established its Chemistry Discipline in 1897, and then this

Chemistry Discipline developed to be the Department of Chemistry at

Zhejiang University in 1920 after Yuying Academy became Zhejiang

University in 1914. During the readjustment of China’s Tertiary

Education system in 1952, the two chemistry departments were combined to be the Department of Chemistry at Zhejiang Normal

University, which became the Department of Chemistry at Hangzhou

University in 1958. In 1958, Zhejiang University recreated its own department of chemistry. In 1998, the four departments of chemistry at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agriculture

University and Zhejiang Medical University reunited as the

Department of Chemistry at Zhejiang University during the

amalgamation of the four individual universities.

With a brilliant history, the Department of Chemistry of

Zhejiang University has cultivated a large number of outstanding scholars. Many famous chemists, including 25 academician of

Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering used to study or work in our department.

The Department of Chemistry at Zhejiang University is playing a very important role in the development of chemistry education and research in China. Currently, it is a National Basic Research &

Teaching Personnel Training Bases and a National Teaching Bases for

Basic Engineering Courses, The chemistry experimental center is the first State Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Higher

Educational Institutions. Chemistry was appointed to be a State Key

Discipline in 2007.

Currently, this department has about 176 faculty and staffs including 64 professors and research fellow (2 Chinese Academy of

Sciences, 1 experts in State "1000-elite Programs", 1 Chair Professors in Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 9 scholars awarded with

National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars), 64

associate professors. 290 doctoral graduate students, 238 master graduate students and approximately 307 undergraduates. The department has 3 overseas students and 35 postdoctors.

files and programs of Zhejiang University, the department of

3、Rules for the recruitment

（i）recruitment qualification of tutors

1. Tutors’ admission qualification is re-confirmed once a year.

Advisors who employed as paying equal attention to teaching and research work and mainly research work (including the distinguished researcher) have the qualification of graduate students’ recruit. The teachers with other jobs types no longer recruit graduate students.

2. In recent three years, the tutors whose annual research budget is above 50, 000 yuan, and funds for masters are not less than 20, 000 yuan, for doctors not less than 40000 yuan have the qualification to recruit students. Every year in March the teacher’s recent 3 years’ scientific research funds in the account of chemistry are checked to determine the enrollment qualification. The funds include: all kinds funds from an administrative project (including funds sponsored by school)；funds from a participant project (as a top three participant), including (1) State funds, 973, 863 and other national and provincial projects, which are responsible for 50, 000 yuan annual budget in

nearly three years; (2) Single fund which is more than 1 million, and separately more than 150, 000. To ensure enough funds for graduate students to complete their studies successfully, the project’s participates need the signature of the project leader, to make sure that the leader is willing to pay for the bills when the funds is inadequacy.

3. Besides special provisions of school, on June 30 this year, doctoral tutors reached 58 years old can no longer recruit a bachelor-straight-to-doctorate student and reached 60 years old can no longer recruit doctor students. Master’s tutor reached 58 years old can no longer recruit master students. The application for recruitment qualification of an instructor will be terminated the year before prescribed age.

4. The tutors who didn’t pass the last year’s examination can’t be allowed to recruit students.

（ii）the vacancy of tutor’s recruitment

1. Scholars of one thousand people plan in Zhejiang province, the national youth one thousand entrants, distinguished professor of

Yangtze river, Qiushi scholar chair professor, the national key talent project participants, winners of national science fund for

distinguished young scholars, winners of national natural science foundation--outstanding youth foundation, distinguished researchers and university researcher at the "one hundred plan", and whose annual research funding over 1 million in recent 3 years can award another 1 vacancy of master student. Every tutor can recruit not more than 2 masters every year.

2. Doctoral tutors who meet the admission qualification can recruit 2 doctors; Academicians, top experts of Zhejiang province, scholars of one thousand people plan, the national youth one thousand entrants, distinguished professor of Yangtze river, Qiushi scholar chair professor, the national key talent project participants, winners of national science fund for distinguished young scholars, winners of national natural science foundation-outstanding youth foundation, distinguished researchers and university researcher at the

"one hundred plan" can award another 1 vacancy of doctor student.

Every doctoral tutor can recruit not more than 3 doctors every year.

3. Tutors whose students win the Zhu Kezhen prize this year, can award another 1 admissions vacancy.

4. Every tutor can only recruit one exam-free undergraduate student in the department of chemistry in Zhejiang University

(include masters and bachelor-straight-to-doctorate students).

Students from Qiushi class and “3+5” exam-free don’t occupy the number of exam-free student in the department of chemistry in

Zhejiang University, but occupy the total numbers of recruitment.

5. Every teacher can only recruit one spring successive master-doctor students, the remaining vacancy held until the following April for the recruitment of students.

6. Do not allow all forms of titular advisors.

7. Each tutor can totally recruit not more than five masters and doctors. (except for the international students and the school guaranteed rewards enrollment).

8. Tutors whose total Ph. D candidates reached ten can’t get the reward recruitment. Tutors’ total Ph. D candidates can’t exceed 12 in principle (excluding school awarded Ph. D students).

（iii）Two-way selection of students and tutors

Academic advisor and master/bachelor-straight-to-doctorate students in department of chemistry implement two-way choice.

1. Students after admission should interview with at least three tutors to make full understanding between teachers and students.

After interview, students should fill in "graduate student and mentor two-way selection interview record ".

2. Students should determine tutor within two months after admission, and tutor should sign the opinion in "graduate student and mentor two-way selection interview record ".

3. Both teachers and students should confirm and sign the two-way choice table. After that, graduate student should submit

"graduate student and mentor two-way selection interview record" and "graduate student and tutor two-way selection table" to graduates’ secretary.

1. Study Period: 2.5 years (from 2018 on, study period adjusts to

3 years)

2. Objectives：

Master graduates from department of Chemistry at Zhejiang

University shall possess the correct outlook of the world, life and values; love the motherland and cultivate good character; seek truth from facts; study rigorously; have good professional ethics. They should also possess a solid basic theory of chemical and wide scope of knowledge. They could do research independently in chemical for being competent professionals in the investigation of academic research and project management.

3. Basic requirement：

(1) Morality: All masters should strictly comply with national laws, regulations, the relevant rules and regulations, adhere to the principle of seeking truth from facts, do academic research strictly,

abide by the academic ethics and possess social sense of responsibility, team work spirit, physical and mental health.

(2) Knowledge structure: All masters should learn the basic theoretical knowledge of chemistry, pay attention to the development of synthesis and preparation skills, learning and innovation of the characterization technology, and research methods. They should systematically master a certain specialized knowledge and experimental skills of chemical disciplines, including the theoretical system, synthesis technology, characterization and specialized research methods, understanding the present situation and development trend.

(3) Basic ability：All masters should have relatively independent scientific research ability, including design a research plan, carry out the experiment, repetitive control experiment, experiment data processing and result analysis ability, etc. They should be able to show the academic expertise of academic communication ability in written or oral form.

4. Credits requirement：

No less than 26 credits are compulsory for graduation of the

master degree. This includes 5 credits for public courses, 1 credit for general quality course, no less than 6 credits for professional degree courses, 4 credits for major-related optional courses, and 2 credits for reading reports.

5. Requirements for graduation：

(1) All master students are required to finish the compulsory courses and achieve the minimum required course credits；

(2) All master students are required to pass all assessments and meet the relevant requirements；

(3) All master students are required to pass the dissertation defence；

(4) All master students are required to publish at least 1 scientific paper related to the research project as the first author except tutors in

Chinese core journals (CSCD); or at least 1 scientific paper related to the research project as the second author except tutors in SCI journals which impact factor above 3.0.

Doctor graduates from department of Chemistry at Zhejiang

They should possess a solid broad chemistry theoretical knowledge and system of professional knowledge. They should also have the innovation of scientific spirit, international vision and communication ability, and can independently engage in scientific research, making creative achievements.

3. Basic requirement：

(1) Morality: All doctors should strictly comply with national laws, regulations, the relevant rules and regulations, adhere to the principle of seeking truth from facts, do academic research strictly, abide by the academic ethics and possess social sense of responsibility, team work spirit, physical and mental health.

(2) Knowledge structure: All doctors should learn the basic theoretical knowledge of chemistry, pay attention to the development of synthesis and preparation skills, and learn innovation of the characterization technology and the research methods. They should systematically to master a certain specialized knowledge and experimental skills of chemical disciplines, including the theoretical system, synthesis technology, characterization and specialized research methods, understanding the present development trend and the international academic research frontier.

(3) Basic ability：All doctors should master the advanced method of scientific research, and can learn the professional area with a foreign language expertly. Besides, they should possess the ability to conduct academic research and communication follow the international academic front. By participating in scientific research project, they could independently engage in creative scientific research, scientific research and technology development projects; explore and solve the fundamental problems of the economic and social development.

4. Credits requirement：

No less than 14 credits are compulsory for graduation of the master degree, including 4 credits for public courses, no less than 2 credits for professional degree courses, 2 credits for major-related optional courses, and 2 credits for reading reports.

5. Requirements for graduation:

(1) All doctoral students are required to finish the compulsory courses and achieve the minimum required course credits;

(2) All doctoral students are required to pass all assessments and meet the relevant requirements;

(3) All doctoral students are required to pass the dissertation defence;

(4) All doctoral students are required to publish at least 2 scientific paper related to the research project as the first author except tutors in SCI journals, among them at least one paper which impact factor above 3.0; or at least 1 scientific paper related to the research project as the first author except tutors in SCI journals which impact factor above 5.0.

They should systematically master a certain specialized knowledge and experimental skills of chemical disciplines, including the theoretical system, synthesis technology, characterization and specialized

research methods, understanding the present development trend and the international academic research frontier.

(3) Basic ability: All doctors should master the advanced method of scientific research, and can expertly learn the professional area with a foreign language. Besides, they should possess the ability to conduct academic research and communication follow the international academic front. By participating in scientific research project, they could independently engage in creative scientific research and technology development projects; explore and solve the fundamental problems of the economic and social development.

4. Credits requirement:

No less than 34 credits are compulsory for graduation of the master degree, including 7 credits for public courses, no less than 1 credit for general quality courses, 8 credits for professional degree courses, 6 credits for major-related optional courses and 4 credits for reading reports.

5. Requirements for graduation:

(1) All doctoral students are required to finish the compulsory courses and achieve the minimum required course credits;

II、Curricula-elective

（1）Basic information

1. Graduate students shall conduct a system of online elective

(withdraw) classes. Online elective have three stages: primaries,

supplement (withdraw), supplement (withdraw) in winter (summer)

semester. Primary elective will be open in the middle of every summer or winter holidays; supplement (withdraw) elective will be open from the first week to the second week of autumn (spring) term；supplement (withdraw) in winter (summer) term is open from the ninth week of autumn (spring) term to the second week of winter

(summer) term. Primaries, supplement (withdraw) stages can select

(withdraw) the courses of the second autumn-winter (spring-summer) term; supplement (withdraw) stage can only supplement (withdraw) the courses of winter (summer) term while the successive courses in autumn-winter (spring-summer) term can't be supplement (withdraw).

2. Graduate and the undergraduate students with qualifications for course selection should select courses according to "the notice for graduate students’ online courses", "the undergraduate and graduate students’ management for exchange course (trial)". Graduate education is responsible for the general course selection and the department of chemistry is responsible for the professional class.

3. During the online course selection, elective doesn't have order.

The final list is confirmed randomly. During the primaries, graduate students can select two English and political courses.

4. During online supplement (withdraw) selection: English and political course of graduate students are alternative to undergraduates in spring and summer semester; public courses which have capacity can be chosen, the courses of no capacity can be candidates; professional courses are handled by the department of graduate students.

5. During online supplement (withdraw) selection, graduate students and undergraduate students with elective qualification can withdraw course on the Internet.

6. During online supplement (withdraw) selection in winter

(summer) terms, graduate students and undergraduate students with elective qualification can select (withdraw) the course in winter

(summer) terms. Meanwhile, the selected (withdraw) courses needn't to be handled by department of chemistry. The courses which possess capacity can be chosen. If the courses are full, only when someone withdrawed the courses can they be chosen.

7. Course selection should be finished within the allotted time.

The result can be referred on the internet.

（2）Elective procedure

1. Associated training program

Each graduate student will be associated with a corresponding professional training program based on their personal information.

The training program can be viewed in the pages of "cultivation" -

"direction choice".

If no training program is displayed on this page, online course selecting system could not work. Please contact the department of graduate student in time to complete the corresponding training program.

2. The determination of research direction

There are various research directions in the training program and select one of them as a guide of future courses after discussing with your tutor. Once the research direction is determined, it can’t be changed at will. Once the changes are made, the individual learning plan that has been formulated will be automatically cleared.

3. Making individual learning plans

Please develop individual learning plan based on the selected research direction. The program of individual learning programs needs to meet the credits requirements and courses required in the

training program.

The individual learning plan will be the basis for the examination of the course credit for graduation and the minimum requirement for the course credit at graduation. If you fail to complete the program, you will not graduate successfully. Therefore we suggested that you would not add courses that are not related to graduation requirements in the individual learning program.

The individual learning plan will be efficient after the approval by the tutor and graduate office. If the individual learning plan needs to be modified, a revised individual learning plan needs to be submitted. Upon approval of the tutor and graduate office, the new learning plan will take effect.

Due to special reasons (including cross-professional master-doctor students and the master-doctor students obtained the old course credits before English or political course reform), the individual learning plan is not able to meet the requirements of the professional training program. A new individual study plan could first carry on according to the actual course and then special approval of individual learning plan could be processed.

4. Online course selection

In the "my courses" page, you can view all the courses in progress, including all the courses within and out of your individual learning plan.

If the courses in individual study program are not available for online courses selection in this semester, the reason may be that the courses do not start in this semester. (Part course should be supposed to start in this semester, but failed for some reason. You can inquire in the online "full school opening class" column or consult the graduate school of the open course). You can select this course next time or change your learning plan to select other courses with the help of tutors.

There is a program called “0000999”, which is named as

“General Quality Courses (at least one credit)”. This course is not open actually, but you need to incorporate it into your individual learning program. When online courses selection started, the quality public course can be selected as an alternative course for “0000999” course. If a course is both a professional course and general quality course, the credit review can be counted as the professional courses

or general quality course. If you want to choose a curriculum out of your individual learning plan, you can select the course through

“cultivation”-“my curriculums”-“course searching”.

5. Class schedule

If the color of current semester course is black, the course is selected and if it is orange, the course is pending. means the conflicting course.

6. Examination

The schedule will be arranged two weeks before the exam.

Remember to check the time.

(3) English course

1. Teaching arrangement and exam

0500008 “Graduate students basic skills of English” doesn’t have

lesson, mainly depending on self-learning. It needn’t be selected.

Students just need to apply the online examination within the

allotted time. Students can utilize graduate students’ course center to

learn this course. The platform is in order to improve the graduate

students’ basic skills in English listening, reading, vocabulary,

translation and so on. By using the computer examination, the exam

of this course can be arranged many times every year (according to

the graduate school notice), and the graduate students can select the

examination room according to the online application. Exam time is

80 minutes (20 minutes for listening, 60 minutes for the rest), the

score distribution is as follows: 15 points for hearing, 30 points for

vocabulary, 40 points for reading and15 points for cloze test.

0500009 “Graduate students enhancement of English” need select online and participate the course teaching and examination.

This course is in fall, winter, spring and summer short term. The period is 32 credit hours. This course mainly teaches English practical application strategy, in order to make the graduate students grasp the ability of international situation expression, communication, the etiquette and so on. The test time is at the end of term, specifically arranged by teacher.

2. Qualification for exemption

Graduate student degree English course adopts the exemption rule. After exemption, students don't have to take part in the daily teaching and examination. Before obtain the credit, students can apply exemption.

Graduate students passed one of the examinations below can apply exemption: ① CET-6: above 480 points and the hearing part above 145 points；② TOEFL: above 80 points; ③ IELTS: above 6 points；④ passed TEM-8; ⑤ masters who passed 0500008 “Graduate students basic skills of English” or 0500009 “Graduate students enhancement of English” can apply exemption after being admitted to doctors within 2 years.

Graduate students satisfied exemption qualification need to apply the exemption online during the elective time and make a confirmation at graduate school within the allotted time.

(4) Notes

About retake a course: If graduate students didn’t pass or miss the examination, they can select the course again. The “retaken” record will be leaving on the academic transcript.

The variation of elective will be issued on the graduate school homepage in time. During elective time, the public course can consult the department of postgraduate education (Tel: 88981406). II、Training Process

（1）thesis proposal

Thesis proposal is an important part of the graduate students’ degree cultivation, which promises the progress and quality of the academic dissertation, thus it’s necessary for graduate students to do the thesis proposal.

1. Time

Master: first academic year after admission

Doctor: first academic year after admission for general doctor and second academic year for bachelor-straight-to-doctorate graduates

2. Requirement

Graduate students should draft the thesis proposal under the indication of supervisors. The thesis proposal should contain the topic significance, the review about this research, the main research contents and research plan. Mainly includes:

(1) Topic basis：

① the origin, formation and content of this topic

② research significance

③ analysis of this research from home and abroad at present

④ main reference

(2) research plan：

① research object, innovation point, research contents and the

key problem to solve

② research methods, technical route, experimental scheme and feasibility analysis

③ research program and progress prediction

④ anticipate research achievement

If the thesis proposal doesn’t pass, it should be redone within the

required time. If the graduate students need to change the academic

dissertation, the thesis proposal should be redone.

3. The reviewer of the thesis proposal

Master: The review panel of experts should be constituted by at

least 3 associate professors or upper the title of a technical post.

Doctor: The review panel of experts should be constituted

mainly by doctoral supervisor and team members, and encourage the participation of the teacher from other department and major.

4. The submission of the thesis proposal After the thesis proposal past the review，the proposal content is to be submitted to postgraduate student management system, and its related paperwork is required to be submitted to postgraduate office.

(2) Reading Report

Assessment includes:

(1) Participation of poster exhibition (No less than 1 time)

(2) Reports for research-related seminar attended (No less

than 6 reports)

(3) Attendance of postgraduate academic forums

The relative content is required to be uploaded to postgraduate student management system before the deadline scheduled, and all related paperwork shall be submitted. 2 credits in total for the reading report.

Master students should conduct reading reports at least 4 times, attend postgraduate academic forums at least 1 time, attend international conference and perform oral report at least 1 time. 2 credits in total for the reading report.

General doctor students should conduct reading reports at least 6 times, attend postgraduate academic forums at least 1 time, attend international conference and perform oral report at least 1 time. 2 credits in total for the reading report.

Bachelor-straight-to-doctorate students should conduct reading reports at least 10 times, attend postgraduate academic forums at least

2 times, attend international conference and perform oral report at least 2 times. 4 credits in total for the reading report.

(3) Mid-term assessment

According to “graduates’ mid-term assessment conducting plan

of Zhejiang University”, all doctors should conduct mid-term

assessment. The time for general doctors,

bachelor-straight-to-doctorate students, MD-PhD stduents is the end

of the first academic year, the end of the second academic year and

the year after finishing one year’s doctoral study, respectively. The

assessment ranks from excellent, qualified and disqualification.

(4) Social practice

Doctoral candidates should participate in social practice according to the relevant provision of school.

(5) Pre-dissertation defense

All doctoral students should arrange pre-dissertation defense.

The time for pre-dissertation defense should within 4 months before dissertation defense.

Pre-dissertation defense should be public, and reviewed by assess group consisted of doctoral supervisor and the team members.

PhD student should send thesis draft to expert to review three days before pre-dissertation defense and post the defense notice. Doctoral dissertation should be checked strictly and seriously. The innovation, workload, format and the academic writing of the doctoral dissertation are very important. The deficiencies and problems in paper should be point out and the improvement opinion should be put forward. Experts should decide whether the pre-dissertation defense passed or not. Those who didn’t pass the pre-dissertation defense should improve the dissertation according to the opinion raised by experts and put forward the application of pre-dissertation defense once again within the requirement time. After the pre-dissertation defense, doctors should upload the details in postgraduate student management system.

III、International communication

(1) A scholarship under the State Scholarship Fund of the

China Scholarship Council

To work closely for the implementation of the outline of national science and technology development planning and cultivate a number of top creative talents for national construction, China Scholarship

Council set up “a scholarship under the State Scholarship Fund of the

China Scholarship Council” in 2007.

Our school can recommend to China Scholarship Council: about

150 joint training of doctoral students and a certain number of students pursuing a doctoral degree.

The time of overseas study for joint training of doctoral students and students pursuing a doctoral degree is 6-24 months and 36-48 months, respectively.

The China Scholarship Council will afford the international travelling expenses and the living expenses (according to the national rules) in the period of overseas study.

(2) The overseas study sponsored by Zhejiang University

To advance the substantial and strategic cooperation with the

world first-class universities and academic institutions cooperation, use high quality resources of science, technology, education and train top-notch innovative personnel who can grasp the development of world science and technology, possess the innovation ability and top-notch international vision, "funded PhD student of Zhejiang university international cooperation project" was set up. The international travelling expenses and the living expenses are sponsored by Zhejiang University. The funding affords for six months.

(3) The sponsor for international academic conference

To encourage graduate student in our school to take an active part in international academic exchanges, promote the internationalization of graduate education in our school, further broaden the graduate international vision and improve the quality of graduate education, outstanding graduate students can be sponsored by school to participate a disciplinary authority international conference.

The sponsor limit is according to the ability and essays of the applicants.

If the participant’s paper is employed as a post, a one way international travel funding is sponsored; If the participant’s paper is employed as an oral report, a round-trip international travel funding is sponsored;

If the participant’s paper is employed as a special report, a round-trip international travel and the living expenses during the period of conference are sponsored.

Every graduate student can only get the sponsor one time in

principle.

(4) The Lu’s funds of graduate students’ international exchange

To make Zhejiang University as a world's advanced first-class university, the Hongkong’s famous entrepreneur Zengyong Lu and

Zengqi Lu contributed money to set up the Lu’s funds of graduate students’ international exchange.

The fund is 25,000 yuan for each student; every year 8 students

can get the sponsor; the sponsor time is 3 months (over 90 days).

(5) Other short period international exchange program

Please pay attention to the notification on the website of

graduate school and department of chemistry.

IV、Social practice

In order to further improve the quality of doctoral education, promote the combination of doctoral education and social practice, strengthen the sense of responsibility for doctoral students’ country and social service, enhance the comprehensive competitiveness of doctoral students, according to the ministry of education on further strengthening and improving the research (teach education [2010] 11), the education reform plan of graduate student in Zhejiang university

(Zhejiang university research [2014] 31), combining the reality of doctoral education work, social practice management approach (trial) for the doctoral student in Zhejiang university was established

(hereinafter referred to as the "method").

The “method” provision: The social practice is a compulsory part of doctoral education. All of the academic degree doctoral after

(including) Class of 2014 (except Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreign students), are required to take part in social practice activities.

V、Graduation and degree awarding

(1) application procedure

After finishing the studying period, there are 4 times to apply for

graduation and degree awarding in spring, summer, autumn and

winter every year. The deadline of application is January 15th, April

15th, July 15th and October 15th, respectively. The time for

graduation and degree awarding is March 30th, June 30th, September

30th and December 30th, respectively. Here is the application flow

Login postgraduate management information system, check the information and study plan; tutor review the study plan; upload the Preparation stage primary reviewed paper; system entry thesis proposal, reading reports, scientific research, preliminary defense information and degree information, etc.

Confirm Print reply application report, published papers' homepage, application certificate of SCI and impact factor. Submit them to department of chemistry for review after tutor's sign.

Pre-review by the experts within department of chemistry (1-2 Pre-review weeks). According to the preliminary opinions, modify and upload 56 the paper again.

3 copies anonymous review papers (Dr.) or 1 copy anonymous

External review paper (Ma.) is sent by department of chemistry, 2 copies of review the papers are sent by tutor.

Reply will conduct when all opinions are "agreed to reply" or Dissertation "small modified defense". Before reply, the information such as stage time, location and rejoin committee members should be input into the "system".

Materials Submit all materials as required to subject evaluation committee, submission division evaluation committee for discussion.

Graduate students can login the unified identity authentication system, clicking on the "leaving application". After all leave

Departure formalities, print the departure chart, then brought the diploma and school degree certificate (30th).

(2) Relevant provisions

1. Dissertation should be strictly in accordance with the

“Zhejiang University graduate dissertation writing rules”.

2. Research achievements should use Zhejiang University as the first institution and the graduate student should be the first or second author (the first author is tutor). Research achievements with the following situations are also accepted:

(1) If the first author of the research achievement is one of the mentor groups and the second author is graduate student, it is also accepted. The members of the group should be input in the

"postgraduate education information management system" within one year of the admission.

(2) The research achievements accomplished by joint training doctoral students in our school under the advisor of overseas professor, complying with the following circumstances shall be accepted: The first author is doctoral student in our school and the institutes are partner universities and Zhejiang University; partner mentor is the first author and the doctoral student in our school is the

second author, but Zhejiang University is the first institute; doctoral student is the second co-first author, but Zhejiang University is the first institute.

(3) The reviewer of master's degree thesis should composed by 3 or more associate professor or professor in relevant field (including at least 1 expert in other school). If 2 or more experts don’t agree to reply, the reply will be terminated. If only one expert don’t agree, another expert tutor can be hired to review under the agreement of science committee director. The defense will continue if the expert agreed and terminate if not.

(4) The reviewer of doctor's degree thesis should composed by 5 or more professors in relevant field (including at least 4 experts in other school). If 2 experts give “E” or “D”, the reply will be terminated. If only one expert don’t agree, classics science committee director or president of the department will decide whether the reply will continue or not.

(5) Masters' dissertation committee is composed by 3-5 experts with associate professor and above titles, among them experts from

other department and other major are necessary. The chairman of defense committee should be held by a professor. If the committee is made up of three people, the tutor of applicant can't attend dissertation committee.

(6) Doctoral dissertation committee is composed by 5-7 experts with professor and above titles, among them experts with the qualification to indicate doctors should be no less than 4, in other department and other major should be no less than 2. The chairman of defense committee should be held by a professor with the qualification to indicate doctors except the applicant’s tutor. If the committee is made up of five people, tutor of the applicant can’t exceed 1 people among them. The reviewer of the thesis can only include 1 people in the dissertation committee.

(7) The dissertation should make a record. The recorder of master's degree thesis should be the person with master's degree or above middle title; the recorder of doctoral degree thesis should be the person with a doctoral degree or above vice-senior title.

(8) Defense committee shall vote in secret ballot way, and make a reply. With the consent of two thirds or more members, reply is passed. Defense resolution is valid after being signed by the defense committee chairman.

(9) If doctoral research results meet the minimum requirements of school, but not reach the standard of department of chemistry, the doctoral degree application can be sent to discipline evaluation committee by tutor once he completed high quality dissertation. After the agreement of discipline committee, 3 copies of papers will be sent to pre-evaluate by department of chemistry anonymously. Then official defense and degree application could be submitted to the graduate school if the evaluate results are "agree to defense" or

"minor revision".

(10) For master students, if the scientific results can't be published timely, the no result defense could be applied. In order to encourage the high-level-research master, master degree application can be sent to discipline evaluation committee by tutor. After the

agreement of discipline committee, the no result degree can be applied.

1. Object

Full-time graduate students except freshman can apply the awards and honors. Freshman can apply the national awards.

Graduate students finish the study period can’t apply any awards

(except the awards of excellent doctor).

Ph. D changed from masters can apply any awards and honors; doctoral and master students should apply awards as the identification in the application time; master students who changed to Ph. D in graduate grade can only apply the national awards.

3. Procedure

After the relevant notice issued by school and department of chemistry, students can apply the awards and honors voluntarily.

The final list will be determined after evaluation by chemistry graduate student scholarship evaluation committee and working groups.

4. Awards projects

(1) Zhu Kezhen scholarship：Zhu Kezhen scholarship is the top

awards of Zhejiang University evaluated by school scholarship

evaluation committee. The honor can be owned with other

awards but the bonus can’t.

(2) National awards: The bonus is 30,000 each person for Ph. D and 20,000 each person for masters. The honor can be owned with

other awards but the bonus can’t.

(3) Special project scholarship: Set up by the money donated from education organization.

(4) Individual Scholarship: People possessing social practice, social work, training programs for innovation and entrepreneurship, recreational and sports activities, special contribution and so on can apply this scholarship. Everyone can only apply for one project. The winner is recommended by department of chemistry and determined by school.

I、Weekly academic forum

Since 2011, every Friday afternoon, the department of chemistry invites many famous scholars at home and abroad, including the world's top chemical scientists, making a wonderful, frontier academic report for the chemistry teachers and students.

Weekly academic forums strengthen the department of chemistry academic exchange with domestic and international, broaden the graduate student's academic horizons and cultivate the habit of the graduate student academic exchange.

Graduate students should attend lectures eight times or more per semester and submit a review related to lecture. Then course credits

(2 credits) of "chemical theory" will be obtained.

II、Poster Show

In order to improve the graduate student's scientific research ability and innovation consciousness, create good academic atmosphere, set up effective scientific communication platform and

encourage the scientific exchange among students, department of chemistry will organize poster show regularly.

Posters present researchers' research contents and working achievement using clear chart and simple language, which is a commonly form of international conference on academic exchanges and a general way to carry out scientific exchange and display in universities and research institutions.

Since 2010, department of chemistry has held six sessions postshow, every time hundreds of posters will be received. First, second and third prize and the best popularity award will be evaluated according to certain proportion.

Poster show has become the brand activity of chemistry department to cultivate the graduate students' academic exchange capacity and improve the comprehensive quality of graduate students.

III、Teacher assistant reformation

Teaching assistant reformation is one of the mainly reformation in department of chemistry. According to "the regulation of chemistry graduate students' teaching practice", the full-time master and doctoral students in department of chemistry must take "teaching

practice" classes, accomplish a certain period of teaching practice

(TA) task. This regulation conducted for the students enrolled since

2014.

"Teaching practice" is a lesson to make graduate students to take part in teaching basic chemistry experiment for undergraduates.

Through the pre-service training, preliminary experiment, presentation, experiment teaching, safety training and assessment, the graduate student's teaching ability can be cultivated and developed.

The comprehensive quality of graduate students and training quality can be improved.

To regulate the teacher assistant work of graduate students in chemistry department, graduate assistant management team was established, in charge with organizing and coordinating post calculation, evaluation, TA allowance, etc. The team members include department member, office administrator, secretary of undergraduates and graduates, director of experiment center and the analysis platform.

Graduate teacher assistants are divided into theory teaching assistants, experiment teaching assistants and analytical test teaching

assistants, which are confirmed by the secretary of undergraduates, experimental center and analytical test platform, respectively. After

TA notice issuing, students can apply voluntarily with the agreement of tutor.

Theory teaching assistants, experiment teaching assistants and analytical test teaching assistants are assessed by course teacher, experimental teacher and analytical test platform, respectively. All teacher assistants must accept the whole assessment. If any circumstance which isn't suitable for teacher assistants happened, the work will be stopped. The corresponding TA allowance will be not grant and excess money should be retrieved. In the teaching process, graduate students can be rated as excellent TA, given appropriate incentives. Excellent teaching assistant can continue doing the work.

After the workload of TA reaching 96 credit hours, 3 credits can be obtained for "teaching practice lesson" once the assessment is passed.
