History of the Holocaust
HISTORY OF THE HOLOCAUST: AN OVERVIEW On January 20, 1942, an extraordinary 90-minute meeting took place in a lakeside villa in the wealthy Wannsee district of Berlin. Fifteen high-ranking Nazi party and German government leaders gathered to coordinate logistics for carrying out “the final solution of the Jewish question.”Chairing the meeting was SS Lieutenant General Reinhard Heydrich, head of the powerful Reich Security Main Office, a central police agency that included the Secret State Police (the Gestapo). Heydrich convened the meeting on the basis of a memorandum he had received six months earlier from Adolf Hitler’s deputy, Hermann Göring, confirming his authorization to implement the “Final Solution.” The “Final Solution” was the Nazi regime’s code name for the deliberate, planned mass murder of all European Jews. During the Wannsee meeting German government officials discussed “extermi- nation” without hesitation or qualm. Heydrich calculated that 11 million European Jews from more than 20 countries would be killed under this heinous plan. During the months before the Wannsee Conference, special units made up of SS, the elite guard of the Nazi state, and police personnel, known as Einsatzgruppen, slaughtered Jews in mass shootings on the territory of the Soviet Union that the Germans had occupied. Six weeks before the Wannsee meeting, the Nazis began to murder Jews at Chelmno, an agricultural estate located in that part of Poland annexed to Germany.Here SS and police personnel used sealed vans into which they pumped carbon monoxide gas to suffocate their victims.The Wannsee meeting served to sanction, coordinate, and expand the implementation of the “Final Solution” as state policy. -

Journal of Inquiry & Action in Education, 2(1), 2009 From the Holocaust to Darfur: A Recipe for Genocide Joseph D. Karb Springville (NY) Middle School and Andrew T. Beiter Springville (NY) Middle School All too often, social studies teachers present the cruelty of the Holocaust as an isolated event. These units focus on Hitler, gas chambers, and war crimes and end with a defiant and honorable “Never again!” While covering mass murder in this way is laudable, it ultimately might not go as far as it could. For as teaches if we really want to empower our students to prevent genocide, we must look beyond the facts alone to the larger lessons these horrific events can teach us. It is with this background in mind that we wrote this chapter; that in order to teach our students to be good, we have the obligation to help them develop their own understandings of where and why society has fallen off the tracks. The idea of a recipe provided us with a way to help students understand the early warning signs of mass murder such that they would be better equipped to prevent them in the future. Doing so would hopefully inspire them not to bystanders to any similar cruelty, both in the world and in their daily lives. After all, Rwandan President Paul Kagame notes, “people can be made to be bad, and they can also taught to be good.” My responsibility as a teacher is to try to help my students to be good people. And good people work to make the right choices and work against evil. -

The thesis provides a comparative analysis of two films which investigate the origins of ‘fascism’ in their nation through the allegory of the female protagonist and her relationship to the institution of the family: Toshiya Fujita’s 1973 Lady Snowblood (Shurayukihime) and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s 1974 film Martha. -

THE FASSBINDER FOUNDATION Newsletter 2004/2005 Dear Friends, Partners, Followers and Supporters of RWFF and FF Inc., Since we did not send out a Newsletter last year we thought we should not delay in sending you this year's Newsletter before the spring is out. To start with, there is one especially good piece of news: we have "modernized" our website. In future, you will be able to find the latest reports and information at www.fassbinderfoundation.de under the heading NEWS. The German version is running since March 1, 2005, the English version will be ready shortly, and the French version from April 1, 2005 on. It is not only past events which we have cause to celebrate. We were particularly delighted to move offices in December 2003 to our new base at Giesebrechtstrasse 7, which is in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg not far from the Kurfürstendamm. Our new premises have been specially designed for our needs, and the move was organized so impeccably by our employee and Curator Dr. Daniel Kletke, who heads up logistics and coordination, that just one day after the official moving date, we were able to resume daily business. Since 2000 –and thus also last year –the focus of our work has been on the development and prepa- ration of our extensive RWF manuscript archive as well as preparations for releasing further Fass- binder films on DVD. With 24 titles having been released in the USA to date, this year we are launch- ing DVD editions in France, Belgium, Spain and Japan. From April 2005, the titles of sets 3 and 4 al- ready announced by e-m-s will be continued by Kinowelt Home Entertainment under the Arthaus label. -

PERPETRATORS & POSSIBILITIES: HOLOCAUST DIARIES, RESISTANCE, AND THE CRISIS OF IMAGINATION by ERYK EMIL TAHVONEN Under the Direction of Jared Poley ABSTRACT This thesis examines the way genocide leaves marks in the writings of targeted people. It posits not only that these marks exist, but also that they indicate a type of psychological resistance. By focusing on the ways Holocaust diarists depicted Nazi perpetrators, and by concentrating on the ways language was used to distance the victim from the perpetrator, it is possible to see how Jewish diarists were engaged in alternate and subtle, but nevertheless important, forms of resistance to genocide. The thesis suggest this resistance on the part of victims is similar in many ways to well-known distancing mechanisms employed by perpetrators and that this evidence points to a “crisis of imagination” – for victims and perpetrators alike – in which the capability to envision negation and death, and to identify with the “Other” is detrimental to self-preservation. -

The views of survivors to- ward post-war adjustment, drawn from interviews with Holocaust victims, are also presented. INTRODUCTION Considerable interest has existed in the scien- tific and professional communities regarding the long- range effects of psychic-trauma. It is not surpris- ing, therefore, that the World War II Holocaust stimu- lated scientific and professional interests in post- traumatic stress. -
