Sunday Car Walks 10.30am start

Sun 30 Oct Anglezarke B Walk with Margaret Oliver Meet at Horrobin Lane on the bridge Sun 30 Oct Garstang C Walk with Derek Lowe Meet at the main car park A 6 mile / 9.7km walk climbing 456ft / 139m. Parking is in the pay & display near the river and costs £2 30p for 6 hours (you never know!!). From the car park we follow the River Wyre to the viaduct, the old Pilling Pig Railway Line, where we cross over the river and follow field paths to Lingart Lane. We go past Higher Lingart Farm and cross the railway and the M6 motorway to reach Keepers Lane. There is a very muddy patch to cross at the end of this path but it cuts quite a lot off the distance. At the end of Keepers Lane we make for Burn's Farm where we once had a meal with Cyril Spiby. From Burn's Farm we make our way around Spoil Bank Wood to Birk's Farm. Lunch will be taken here. Afterwards we head across field paths to Barnacre Church to follow a path at the back of the church to reach a road which takes us over the motorway again to the remains of Greenhalgh Castle then, when we reach the main road at Garstang, we follow the river back to the car park. As usual I have arranged for there to be weather, HAVE A NICE DAY!

Today’s Walks Today’s starting points: 1. B: A593 shortly before – 2. C: Skelwith Bridge 3. B+: Dungeon Ghyll

Loopy Langdale with Kevin Poole

Grade. A Distance miles / km Climbing ft / m No details available at time of printing

High Raise & the Langdale Pikes with Colin Manning . Grade B+ Distance 6¾ miles /10.9km Climbing 2700ft /822m

Today’s walk, whilst short with a lot of climbing, is one of the classics of the and includes 7 Wainwright Hills. We start our walk from the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and immediately begin our ascent towards via Mark Gate. Once we reach the base of Loft Crag we are between all three of the Langdale Pikes. We go up Loft Crag (2231ft/680m) and follow the path round to the base of Pike O’Stickle (2326ft/709m). Pike O’Stickle involves a bit of a scramble but it is only a short climb and well worth the effort. This option may be omitted in severe weather conditions or for anyone not wishing to do it. From here we head for the highest of the Langdales, (2415ft/736m). This summit does not require any scrambling and is a most impressive peak. This is the second highest point of our walk and the hardest work is now done. After a short stop or possibly lunch break (time depending) we head down a short distance to our next peak, (2297ft/700m), atop the challenging Jack’s Rake. We now cut back to head for (2372ft/723m) before our final notable ascent to the summit of , the highest point of the walk at 2500ft/762m. A short stop here for photo opportunities and refreshment before turning back to head for our final summit, (2395ft/730m). Now it’s all downhill. The path here starts well enough but becomes almost non-existent until we reach the tarn, so care will be taken to keep together so that we don’t stray from the way. Once we reach the tarn it is a rocky, but scenic, descent down the side of Stickle Ghyll to the coaches and refreshment.

Great Langdale Ramble with Phyl & Jim Grade B Distance 8½ miles / 13.7km Climbing1500ft / 457m

Our walk today starts on the A593 at GR349036. We head north for Ivy Crag before turning west to go around Loughrigg Tarn. Turning south we pass Loughrigg Fold and go over Crag Head to descend to Skelwith Force. Here we join the Way,and travel west to High Park and on to Stang End. We now go north and west on field paths and tracks through Wilson Place, Baysbrown and Oak Howe to reach the New Hotel for refreshments and the coaches home. We hope you will enjoy this walk and thank you for your company.

Langdale Laissez Faire with Bill Manning Grade C Distance 6 miles / 9.5km Climbing 450ft / 137m

Starting from Skelwith Bridge we follow the via the waterfalls to Elterwater where there are toilets. We then climb out of the village and, after walking down through the woods, we come to Thrang Farm at Chapel Stile. Here we rejoin the Cumbria Way to walk alongside Great Langdale Beck. After crossing the beck we take field paths to reach the road. We make a left turn here to take the track to Dungeon Ghyll for the coaches and a brew.

Please help to keep the coaches clean by removing muddy boots. Please check that you have all your belongings and take newspapers etc. away with you. Thank you.
