“My aim was to reach the truest part of a man, an artist, who followed his convictions and defined the spirit of his life’s experience using the mate- rial of his passion. 6 DECEMBER 2012 DECEMBER 2012 7 Story by Pastor Z- Photos by Randy Twells & Pastor Z

On Saturday night October 13th, 2012 – the famous boys from the “Southtown San Diego”, P.O.D. (Payable on Death) played to a huge crowd of a few thousand at San Diego Harley Davidson. Host: New York Myke and event promoter Trisha Marshall really know how to throw an awesome benefit party ! Here’s how it all went down. Real bikers have huge hearts – and thank the vets for the freedoms that we all experience. The planning took almost a year! They found a very worthy cause: The Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

Its mission is to provide a college education to every child who has lost a parent while serving in Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps Special Operations during an operational or training mission. The Warrior Foundation is committed to providing scholarship grants, not loans, to more than 900 children. To date, some 191 children of fallen special operations warriors have graduated from college. This event brought in tens of thousands of $’s for the Foundation… what a blessing!

The P.O.D. boys are all Harley lovers… their careers have sky-rocketed… and each of them own a sweet custom HD. So because of the gratitude for the benefit - S.D.H.D. put all four of them through a 5-day extensive bike riding training course called “The Rider’s Edge”, to make sure the guys would have the skills they need to conquer the asphalt.

There was also a “Backstage V.I.P. Meet and Greet Party” put on by S.D.H.D., and Rock 105.3 that included some really lucky raffle winners, some of the Special Ops men and their families, the band and their families and close friends. I had the pleasure of meeting Bryan “Head” Welch from the band “Korn”, plus outreach pastor Ryan Reese – and his “Whosovers” crew, and lots of others.

New York Myke welcomed the masses from the stage, a Navy Seal sang the National Anthem… Then “Sprung Monkey” opened things up and got the crowd fired up. I’d never seen them and yeah they are wild men… and very talented…

Then P.O.D. hit the stage with their incredible nuclear version of blended high strung thrash metal, rap, and hip-hop that has made them famous – literally around the world. They’ve got it down to a fine art, and their world-wide fan base P.O.D. – they’ll give and give – until they’re worn 105.3… and of course – our combined gratitude proves it. out - at every show. Truly an incredible band. for our troops and vets. May we all rock on – and fight on - for freedom, God, and country… and I’ve been a close friend with the guys in P.O.D. This sums it up folks: I love the fact that as Bikers “Pay it Back”… to those who gave the greatest since 1989. We’ve always had mutual respect for – we can think of exciting, fun, creative ways to sacrifice. each other - in fact they played at my 1st church support those who bless us with our freedoms – in the early 90’s, before their music & name that well never take for granted. I’ve personally Jesus said in John 15:13 “Greater love has no went ballistic. I have had the unique pleasure of done a lot of biker benefits (over the last 22 years)– one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his watching their lives, music, and career grow & and they take a lot of Planning, promotion, sweat, friends.” mature. hard work, fortitude and determination – to make it all come together! With Love and Respect – until Next Time… If you’ve never seen P.O.D. live – you’ve missed The Rolling Reporter and Sharp-Shooter, Pastor Z. a rare treat… The boys totally tore it up – the Great job and major kudos to New York Myke, crowd went crazy, and the party was ON! And of Trisha, and their crew at SDHD, a very special See more photos at course the crowd wished it would never end! The band’s lineup included original 1967 members George Bunnell, Randy Seol, Mark Weitz, Gene Gunnels, and Steve Bartek, and they were joined by 1987 addition Howie Anderson on guitar. At the Celebrity Press Conference with Jay Leno, L.A. City Council member Tom LaBonge honored the Strawberry Alarm Clock on the occasion of the 45th Anniversary of “Incense and Peppermints” being the #1 song in the United States in the fall of 1967. The many celebrities greeting the crowd included Robert Patrick, Antonio Sabato Jr., Willie G. Lorenzo Lamas closed the Glendale stage show with the national anthem. My good friend Tom “Disco” Loveland, the enduring emcee from numerous previous Love Rides, returned to host this year. Wel- come home Tom! Castaic Lake opened at 10am and offered a totally new interactive layout that kept the crowd moving. Canned Heat played set of new and classic blues with its original 1969 Woodstock lineup (Wow!): Harvey Mandel, Larry Taylor, Fito de la Para, and Dale Spalding. The band has been together for over 45 years and first made their mark at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Finally the triumphant return of George Thorogood and the Destroyer- sto Souther California delighted the crowd for 90-minutes, playing his many hits, including “ I Drink Alone”, “Bad to the Bone,” and selections from his new , “2120 South Michi- gan Ave.” A light cloud cover provided a sanctuary of comfort for the bands and the leather clad crowd, who enjoyed their comfort with biker family and friends in this hilly amphitheater setting with hay bale cushy seats. In all, it was just a great time, which is all we ever want at these beloved motorcycle events. Stat Speakin’: Robert Patrick and other celebrities who made the ride from the Glen- dale press conference to Castaic Lake greeted the crowd on stage as Oliver Shokouh announced the top ten fundraisers: Mark Alex Cheely ($10,100), Eric Schmoranzer ($7,295), Jim Carnes ($5,311), Judi Flournoy ($4,271), Gerard McKenzie ($3,491), Kent Vest ($2,930), Melanie Postell ($1,500), J. Michael Popovich ($1,070), Lonnie Hood ($1,030), and Diana Donaldson ($1,025). The winners of the Peter Fonda Ride-In Bike Show were then an- nounced in seven categories: Alfred Barajas’ 2004 Road Glide (Tour- ing); John Kuhn’s 1993 Heritage Softail (Softail, FX); Lenny Meyer’s 2012 Big Boy Chopper (Custom Built); Mike Lee’s 1998 Sportster (XL); Edna Clingerman’s 2003 Softail Springer (Lady Ridden/Owned), and Steve Margeson’s 1949 Harley-Davidson (Antique). The People’s Choice award went to Mike Bilek’s Custom Boss Hoss. “Love Ride 29 was an exciting climax to our third decade,” said Oliver Shokouh, the owner of Harley-Davidson of Glendale who founded the Love Ride in 1984, “and the overwhelmingly positive response will cer- tainly propel us full force into our fourth decade next year.” The beloved Love Ride lives. 26 DECEMBER 2012 DECEMBER 2012 27 28 DECEMBER 2012 DECEMBER 2012 29 Do you live to ride, love the 2nd amendment, enjoy a great party…then read on!

When you think of machine guns, handguns and all the trimmings plus tricked out bikes and an all day party with live music and food, well if you’re me, you say, “why didn’t I think of that”? Hey I’d love to take credit for this year’s first annual Both Barrels Bike and Gun show however the genius behind this event goes to Joe Wyson owner of Discount Firearms and Ammo of Las Vegas. Joe rides and like most of us, loves to ride, so when Cheryl Warren, South West Region Sales Manager for our very own Quick Throttle Magazine approached him about running an ad campaign, he proposed a unique concept to her. As they talked more, Joe brought in his marketing Guru Dan Schott and Both Barrels Guns and Motorcycle show came to life. Cheryl put in the extra 130% effort to help spread the word about the show using all her biker connects and exciting the local bike vendors.

At the same time, the super cool folks at Discount Firearms were doing their magic to bring gun vendors and the like together. Cheryl or Lady Z as she is known to our readers, Joe and Dan pulled all their markers, as we say here in Vegas, to bring the various vendors, bike shops, show bikes and more to this event, these folks are well known and respected in the firearms and biker communities here in Vegas, and so the mix was made for a one day event that would leave people begging for more and Vegas would never be the same.

Just let me give you the layout, if you weren’t among the lucky that got to attend. Discount Firearms and Ammo are located on Highland Drive, just minutes from the Las Vegas Strip and major freeways. 30 DECEMBER 2012 DECEMBER 2012 31 Article and Photos by Digger Dave

Up where I live in the northern part of Phoenix, Nov. 10th dawned a little on the cold side, yep..cold..in Arizona. Luckily with a KSU of 2:30pm I thought it would warm up enough to not have to gear up in leathers, so much for that thought. 11am and the temp was still in the high 40’s, maybe that’s not very cold for some of you but for a desert rat it’s downright chilly!! So, I break out the leathers justifying it by the fact that I wasn’t going to get home until after dark anyway. I headed towards the highway for the 30 mile trip south to the start point at Sanderson Ford in Glendale and I was glad I had taken the time to leather up! I pull in to the parking lot and someone turned the temps up, off came the leathers and all the other cold weather gear, it was beautiful out! The parking lot was already fairly full, with other riders (like me) still trickling in and there was a steady line of people registering for the event. With over 200 riders pre-registered this was going to be a good sized pack rolling out with the Patriot Guard Riders leading the way for an escorted ride. Local radio celebrities Mike Broomhead (KFYI 550 News Talk); Tim and Willy with Jim Owen (KSLX); Fitz Madrid (KUPD); and “NeanderPaul” (KDKB) were keeping everybody in a lighthearted mood as we awaited the opening ceremonies.
