2 TRYON PALACE 2012 ANNUAL REPORT TRYON PALACE 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 3 very day, I remind myself how lucky Tryon Palace is to have a group of individuals who come together and Echoose to support its mission. During the past two years of unprecedented challenges I have been able to highlight, with pride and gratitude, the large number of dedicated contributors and the financial commitments made to Tryon Palace. What we do here at Tryon Palace matters to a lot of folks – and that remains an incredibly potent advocacy tool for us. When I look at the photographs in this report, I see many individuals and families themselves making history and enjoying memorable moments throughout our unique venues. Tryon Palace is not only a first-class history museum, but we have also grown into a vibrant cultural institution in North Carolina, blending history and the arts in new and interesting ways. At a time when museums in general are facing serious challenges, it is particularly gratifying to acknowledge that with your support Tryon Palace has been able to continue to offer high quality educational and cultural programs for our students, our visitors, our community, and our state. The past 18 months have been quite challenging to the core of Tryon Palace and its mission, but they have also underscored our resilience and perseverance. The future always demands changes and adjustments and there is no exception for Tryon Palace. It is clear to me that the Foundation will continue to play an ever more important role in Tryon Palace’s success, and in helping pave the way for a Tryon Palace that is well-equipped to face the future – and to thrive. Our strength will come through the continued support of those of you whose names are already gratefully acknowledged in this annual report – and from many more individuals whose commitments we still need to inspire. Our future very much depends on it. Although your financial contributions are critical, your support as volunteers or through attending the many programs and events we offer, is equally important to our mission and to securing additional supporters. When your friends see you having a lot of fun, they will want to join the party! In 2012, we increased our volunteer hours support by 8% over the previous year. We are well over the half a million dollar mark in terms of labor value received through volunteer work. It’s exciting to think that in just in a couple of years we could reach the one million dollar mark in volunteer labor. This is a powerful indication of the commitment and support that Tryon Palace receives on an annual basis. On behalf of all the staff at Tryon Palace, I thank you for all you do and for all that I am confident you will continue to do. But I need to ask one more favor: become our best ambassadors. Go out there, spread the word and recruit more supporters to become part of the Tryon Palace Foundation. They will be in very good company indeed. Come visit us soon – we love to have you here! Philippe Lafargue Acting Director, Tryon Palace

Thankfully, Tryon Palace was still able to continue a mission of education and preservation through the visitors, families, school groups and dedicated supporters listed in this Annual Report. In fact, an increase in donors and volunteer hours in 2012 allowed Tryon Palace to support higher attendance and offer more programming than the previous year.

Tryon Palace continued to experience the North Carolina History Center’s Tryon Palace Donors impact and growth opportunities for the second year in a row. More visitors came to Tryon Palace in 2012 to see exhibits in the Pepsi Family Center, Regional History Museum and Duffy Gallery. But the visitor spectrum also widened as more people were introduced to Tryon Palace through exhibit openings, partnerships with community groups, a diverse performing arts calendar at Cullman Hall, shopping at the Museum Store and dining at Lawson’s Landing.

The North Carolina History Center has also opened new opportunities for programming and special events at Tryon Palace. Lines of elementary Programs and Special Events Offered to Various Audiences students can be seen moving through the History Center nearly every day of the school year, while younger children enjoy making crafts and learning in the Education Classroom. This expands even further to include a Core Sound Workboat exhibit that promoted North Carolina’s coastal heritage, scavenger hunts that expanded across the Historic Site, and a first-hand look at an architectural design that helps protect sensitive marsh environments.

With the exception of 2010, when the North Carolina History Center was completed, Tryon Palace has seen an annual increase in the number of donors. The Tryon Palace Foundation is now in place to help foster and grow that excitement for preserving Tryon Palace’s legacy.

Increases in programming, events and attendance are all directly connected to Tryon Palace’s steady increase in supporters. It is only through maintaining that support that Tryon Palace will continue forward as it does today. But for Tryon Palace to thrive and deliver the programming that North Carolina’s first permanent state capitol deserves, that support will need to grow even larger.

10 TRYON PALACE FALL 2010 FALL 2010 TRYON PALACE 11 10 TRYON PALACE 2012 ANNUAL REPORT TRYON PALACE 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 11 The Kay P. Williams FUND ryon Palace lost one of its greatest advocates in the fall of 2012 with the pass- Ting of Kay Phillips Williams. As Tryon Palace’s director for more than 30 years, Kay was a dedicated and respected friend to the New Bern community and to the state she loved so well.

When her retirement was announced, state and community leaders, friends and colleagues, came together to honor Kay with a tribute ceremony on Oct. 4 – just a few short weeks before her passing. A fund was also created at that time, allowing all those who had been touched by Kay’s lifetime work and dedication with an op- portunity to give something back in her name. The Tryon Palace staff, Foundation, Commission and Kay’s friends and family, are deeply grateful to the individuals and businesses below for contributing to that fund in 2012.

16 TRYON PALACE FALL 2010 FALL 2010 TRYON PALACE 17 16 TRYON PALACE 2012 ANNUAL REPORT TRYON PALACE 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 17 Volunteers: One of Tryon Palace’s Most Valuable Assets

ore than 355 volunteers donated their time and energy to Tryon Palace in 2012. This selfless gift Mtotaled nearly 25,000 hours of work and was a huge contributor in helping Tryon Palace maintain its services and mission throughout a period of enormous budgetary setbacks.

Volunteers can be found working in the gardens, maintenance, accounting, event management, fundraising, education and every other department within the Palace. The Autism Society of North Carolina, which has offered their services to help their clients become more integrated into the community, also brings young men each week to help clean the windows in the History Center. All combined, Tryon Palace’s 355 volunteers worked 24,978 hours in 2012, an increase of about 8% over the previous year.

“We’re very lucky to have such a dedicated group of volunteers,” said Philippe Lafargue, Acting Director for the Palace. “All together this comes out to a savings of about $544,271 for Tryon Palace. But the greater value is how engaged our community continues to be with the programs, exhibits and overall mission of Tryon Palace.”

Jan Conaty, left, and Joey Carlton were honored during a ceremony on April 24 for having the highest number of volunteer hours for Tryon Palace in 2012. Carl- ton topped the list with 645 hours, followed by Conaty with 617 hours.
