Tattersalls Foal Sale Concludes in Strong Fashion SUNDAY, 3 DECEMBER, 2017 TATTERSALLS FOAL SALE QUALITY FOLLOWS QUALIFY AT CASTLEBRIDGE By Tom Peacock CONCLUDES IN STRONG John Murrell and Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez were responsible for one of the star turns of the 2015 Tattersalls December Mare FASHION Sale when they sold Qualify (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) a few months after her victory in the G1 Investec Oaks and it seems likely that the couple will be in the news again as the auction begins again on Dec. 4. Qualify realised 1.6 million gns when knocked down to John Ferguson and the couple are again using The Castlebridge Consigment for three outstanding lots of a sale teeming with international talent. Two of the trio are top-level winners and bred on the same Fastnet Rock--Galileo cross as Qualify. Leading the way is Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) (lot 1868), who was bred by Dermot Weld's late mother Marguerite out of her G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner Nightime (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Zhukova was shrewdly placed by Dermot Weld to land the GI Man O'War S. at Belmont in May. Tattersalls falls >dark= for a viewing day ahead of the start of the four-day Breeding Stock Sale on Monday morning. But as mare selection gets properly underway today, the team at Park Paddocks can reflect on a successful week of foal trade in Newmarket. With many potential buyers commenting that they=d found it hard to get involved earlier in the week, it was no surprise to see an upturn in prices during Saturday=s final session, in which 167 horses sold for an average of 21,163gns, which rose by 4%. The median also improved to 15,000gns (+15%), while the day=s aggregate was 3,534,200gns (+9%) and the clearance rate was 71%. Overall turnover had dipped by 9% at last year=s foal sale to 30,568,350gns for 743 sold, but that was on the back of a record sale in 2015, which also featured an extra half-day of foals catalogued, 803 of which found a buyer. This year, a total of 32,668,200gns (+7%) was accrued from 742 foals sold at a record average of 44,027gns (+7%) and a record-equalling median of 25,000gns (+19%). The clearance rate was on a par with last year at 78%. Cont. p2 TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 2 OF 13 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 3 DECEMBER, 2017 Tattersalls Foals cont. Overbury Filly The Star... Simon Sweeting's Overbury Stud regularly offers a decent draft At the conclusion of four days of strong trade at Tattersalls, of foals during the Saturday morning session and this year's Chairman Edmond Mahony said, AThe correlation between the highlight was an Iffraaj filly (lot 1150) bought by Liam Norris for yearling market and the foal market is well established and the 110,000gns. record-breaking Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has been matched by an equally dynamic Tattersalls December Foal Sale. This week=s sale has achieved increases across the board and cemented the reputation of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale as the premier fixture of its kind in Europe. Tribute must go to the vendors who yet again have brought the cream of the British and Irish foal crops to Tattersalls and the buyers have responded accordingly. A record average well in excess of 40,000gns, turnover of more than 30 million gns for the fifth consecutive year, as well as a record-equalling median all tell the story of a sale which has produced fierce and sustained competition at all levels of the market from start to finish.@ He added, AThe strength of this week=s Foal Sale indicates a market in good health as the focus now switches to the breeding stock. The Tattersalls December Mare Sale is uniquely cosmopolitan and this year=s catalogue has an abundance of quality in addition to the final instalment of the once in a Lot 1150 | Tattersalls photo generation Ballymacoll Dispersal.@ TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 3 OF 13 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 3 DECEMBER, 2017 Tattersalls December Foals cont. The SUMMER 2012 KINGSCLERE Quarter THE PARK HOUSE STABLES NEWSLETTER The KINGSCLERE Quarter HALF OVERVIEW The story of the 2012 flat season so far has undoubtedly been the unusually wet weather which has wreaked havoc with some of the trainer’s best-laid plans. Certainly, the fast ground horses just haven’t had a fair crack of the whip at all but, due to the fact much of our fast work is done on grass, I am sure some of the horses have conditioned themselves to handling softer ground than maybe would have otherwise been the case. Despite the conditions we have managed to reach 50 winners this term, which has us comfortably on target for where we want to be numerically at the end of the season SIDE GLANCE winning the Diomed Stakes (G3) at Epsom on Investec Oaks Day and to have hit the £700,000 mark in prize money at this stage is a very good haul. Front cover: AUTUMN FIRE wins at Chepstow under David Probert The obvious highlight of the season so far was Bonfire’s Back cover: Team photo reappearance win in the Dante. It was just fantastic to be involved in the subsequent preparation of a leading CONTENTS contender for the Derby and I know everybody connected with the horse thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Though HALF TERM REVIEW, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 ultimately the bid for a Derby winner didn’t end as desired, ANDREW BALDING it would be nice to think in the future we could go through 2012 TWELVE TO FOLLOW COMPETITION, 10 & 11 it all again and have a better end result.

I. Araci’s 2yo Aktabantay has been withdrawn from Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf because of a sore foot. Trainer Hugo Palmer has expressed his deep disappointment at having to make the decision to take him out of the race. “He worked and moved really well this morning and I was growing in confidence about his chances in Friday’s race. Unfortunately, that confidence did not last long as he was found to have a sore foot when he returned back to the barn and I had to make the decision to scratch him.” “He will be absolutely fine and we are now looking forward to the spring and we will be aiming him at the 2,000 Guineas,” Palmer added. The defection of Aktabantay allows Decadent Racing’s Faithful Creek to draw in for trainer Brian Meehan with jockey Kieren Fallon slated to ride. The son of Bushranger has been kept up to his work since his arrival at Santa Anita and has pleased Meehan who has been trackside for the past two days. “We all feel deeply sorry for Hugo Palmer and his team it is all very disappointing when something like this happens,” Meehan said. “We are obviously pleased to be getting a run but not in circumstances like this. Kieren Fallon who will be on board tomorrow got on the horse this morning and said that he gave him a really nice feel and we have the horse in really great shape.” Classic Toast of New York – Jamie Osborne was trackside Thursday morning to see his Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Toast of New York do a routine canter on the main track.

  • Epsom Derby & Oaks
Marten Julian’s Epsom Derby & Oaks ONLINE PREVIEW Friday 5 June The Investec Oaks (1m 4f) (4.30) Writing this on Thursday I am assuming the ground will be riding good for the start of the meeting. The going was on the soft side earlier in the week, but temperatures are set to rise and conditions could be quick by Friday unless the forecast thunderstorms hit the course. If they do, then they could bring up to 5mm of rain, which would ease the ground to good to soft, if not softer. There is nothing more frustrating in an analysis of form than a late change in ground conditions, so this uncertainty has to be factored into my preview. Visually the most impressive performance I have seen has come from Crystal Zvezda when she won a Listed trial stakes at Newbury in May. Rated just 78 at the time, on the strength of her maiden win at Lingfield in October, she beat the 98-rated Montalcino going away by three and a half lengths, with 90-rated Pamona half a length back in third. On figures she ran to a mark of around 103, 4lb lower than her new mark of 107. Crystal Zvezda won the race in the manner of a very talented filly. Last in the early stages and still with a wall of horses in front of her a quarter of a mile from home, she was switched approaching the final furlong and in just a couple of strides went clear of her rivals to win with loads in hand.

The present site of Belmont Park is on the Western edge of the Hempstead Plains. In 1665, the first horse racing meet in North America was held at this race-course called “Newmarket” after the famous track in England. These early races were match events between two or three horses and were run in heats at a distance of 3 or 4 miles; a horse had to complete in at least two heats to be judged the winner. By the mid-18th century, single, "dash" races of a mile or so were the norm. Virginia's partnership with horses began back in 1610 with the arrival of the first horses to the Virginia colonies. Forward thinking Virginia colonists began to improve upon the speed of these short stocky horses by introducing some of the best early imports from England into their local bloodlines. Horse racing has always been popular in Virginia, especially during Colonial times when one-on-one matches took place down village streets, country lanes and across level pastures. Some historians claim that the first American Horse races were held near Richmond in Enrico County (now Henrico County), Virginia, in 1674.
