  • The Non-Stop Course Record of the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race
    The non-stop course record of the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race 2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the DW non-stop course record, set by Brian Greenham and Tim Cornish of Richmond and Reading Canoe Clubs. The record stands at 15 hours 34 minutes and despite better boat technology and improved training, it has (officially, at least) remained untouched. Steve Baker and Duncan Capps of Richmond Canoe Club and the Army Canoe Union surpassed it in 2000 with a time of 15 hours 18 minutes, but by the time they reached Westminster the race had long been cancelled due to the dangerous conditions, and their ‘new’ record was disregarded Breaking the record requires a combination of factors: a genuinely world- class crew, little wind (or a tail wind at worst), and good flow on the Kennet and Thames. This combination has eluded the race for some time. Below is a short Q&A with Brian Greenham and Tim Cornish to mark the 40th anniversary of their record-breaking run follows: Q: What does setting the DW record mean to you now? Tim: When we set the record in 1979 we already had the record from the previous year and it was being broken regularly so it was not that significant at the time. Winning the race was the thing. As time has passed I guess it has become more meaningful and significant. Brian: I think the one big advantage I always feel we had was we were not trying to set a record but just trying to win.

March 2019 Here's a round-up of what's happening here at B3C... View from the chair This from James... Spring seems to be sneaking up on us. For those who’ve been down to the canal you’ll have started to see bulbs flowering and the trees starting to bud up. With the nights getting longer as well we head towards our 40th summer season – which is really exciting. We’ll be getting ready for this over the next month, with a barn tidy, new boats arriving and older boats being checked over. For the racers, the season is in full swing and we are halfway through both the Waterside and Thameside series’ – more on that from Tina. We’ve also agreed our first set of courses for the year. With the changes to the British Canoeing qualifications these are a little different – more details on the courses to follow. We’ll also be running taster sessions on the first Saturday of every month, to help more people discover what we love about paddling. Finally, as this is our 40th year we are organising lots of events to bring the club together and celebrate – see 'Put this on your Calendar' below. See you on the water soon!     £6 2018 Canoe Sprint & Marathon Handbook NEW for 2018 - Racing Coach Award At the start of 2014, the British Canoeing Coaching Strategy Group initiated a review of our qualifications. This resulted in proposals to revise the structure, with a phased approach to the development (and implementation) of the various components. The first phase focused on the Club Activity Assistant, piloted at the start of 2016. This was followed by developments within the Leadership strand, including a new Paddlesport Leader Award, rebranding of the 4 and 5 Star awards, and the introduction of a Guide scheme; all launched April 2017. This next phase focuses on the development of the qualifications previously pitched at UKCC Level 2. The development is, in the main, focused on a restructuring and creating discipline specific pathways available across all disciplines. This will significantly change the prerequisites and the pathway through taught and assessed elements. Direct entry to the Racing Coach Award, removal of the portfolio and specific deliverers. The ‘Coach Awards’ will supersede the current Level 2, Moderate/Advanced Water Endorsements, and Discipline Support Modules. The qualifications are designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline/environment. Executive Summary This document proposes some ideas to create a National Canoe Time Trial Series for Great Britain. The main objective is establish a national standard format for time trials, to form a competitive race series for high kneeling canoes, and also embrace the sit&switch style of paddlers. The series will run throughout the summer and co-exist, but remain entirely separate from the existing Hasler race calendar. The main ideas and recommendations described in this document are: 1. To outline a proposal for a standard race format for a canoe time trial. 2. For the proposal to be reviewed by the British Canoe Union (BCU) Marathon Racing Committee (MRC) for advice and recommendations. 3. That the BCU MRC should sanction a trial event format for the 2015 calendar year. 4. The proposal should be circulated to canoe clubs for wider consultation, comments and feedback. 5. That a central organising committee be formed of representatives from the canoeing fraternity, to agree a time trial race format, regulations and event organisation. 6. For a number of clubs who register interest, to be invited to test the concept during 2015, in conjunction with their scheduled Hasler marathon event. 7. That a review be conducted at the end of 2015. This document is not prescriptive, but simply sets out some ideas for consideration and refinement by a central organising committee.
