Most primitive forms of life can be divided into those that lack a nucleus in their cells (prokaryotes) and those with a nucleus (eukaryotes). Most organisms that we associate with today – the complex multicellular animals and plants (called ‘metazoans’) – are eukaryotes which contain nuclear DNA inside them. Most eukaryotic organisms undergo sexual reproduction, the sharing of genetic material to make a new generation, although some can reproduce asexually by budding off identical clones. Some animals like hydras (a relative of the jellyfish) can reproduce sexually or bud off clones depending on food availability.

												  11Th International Polychaete Conference Sydney, Australia 4-911th International Polychaete Conference Sydney, Australia 4-9 August 2013 Program Handbook and Abstracts A workshop for invited polychaete taxonomists is being held after the Lizard Island Polychaete Workshop conference at the Australian Museum’s Lizard Island Research Station Funding for the 2013 polychaete taxonomic workshop at Lizard Island being (photos inside front and back cover), thanks to support from the Lizard held directly after the conference has been proudly provided by LIRRF. This funding is part of the on-going mission of LIRRF. Most visiting research Island Reef Research Foundation scientists who use the facilities of the Lizard Island Research Station (LIRS) are affiliated with academic or research institutions and are dependent on grants. The "bench fees" they can afford to pay are insufficient to cover LIRS operating and capital costs. The Australian Museum and LIRRF make up the gap. Every year LIRRF is having to increase the amount it collects from its donor base to support LIRS because government funding for the Museum and academic research is in steady long-term decline. The need to continue research at Lizard Island has never been greater. The Great Barrier Reef with its associated sand, seagrass, mangrove and inter-reefal communities is one of the largest and most diverse ecosystems on our planet. It is immensely rich in undiscovered and unexplored life forms. We need to extend our understanding of this amazing place (a) because we humans are inherently curious about other life forms, especially those as diverse as those found on the reef; (b) because research in this wonderland is yielding information of enormous practical use and potential; and (c) because the reef is at risk as a result of human activity; we need to know the scientific basis and extent of that risk and how to conserve the area for future generations.

INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper is to present the life and scientific contributions of the geol- ogists of Russian origin in the Australasia/Oceania region – Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Indonesia, etc. Under the term “geologists” we include all special- ists of the Earth Sciences, i.e. geologists, mineralogists, tectonists, geophysicists, geochemists, palaeontologists, mine or drilling engineers, hydrogeologists, cosmos- geologists, cosmos-geochemists, etc. Under the denomination “Russian origin” we understand people of any ethnic origin who once lived as Russian nationals in the Russian Empire, the USSR or the Russian Federation, and their descendants, and who emigrated from the territory of the Russian Empire, the USSR or the Russian Federation.

Darwin wrote in The Origin ofSpecies. The rocks beyond the trilobite-laden Cambrian seemed to be barren. Where were the fossil ancestors to all those amazing early animals? This book is about the quest to solve Darwin’s Dilemma. Since Darwin’s time, palaeontologists have been seeking the hidden history of animals. And sure enough, they have found fossils, all over the world, going back far into the past; fossils that would have thrilled Darwin—large, enigmatic marine forms, and a veritable feast of tiny single cells. But the relatively sudden (geologically speaking) dawn of the modern world of animals—the ‘Cambrian explosion’—has remained a puzzle. Was it really an ‘explosion’ of new forms? Or was it simply an explosion of fossils, once animals acquired hard parts which could be well preserved? In this highly personal and engaging book, Martin Brasier, one of the key players in the study ofPrecambrian life, describes the nature and challenges of the quest, which has taken scientists to the remotest locations. He argues that the Cambrian explosion was real—a genuine and profound change affecting the whole Earth system. And the cause may have been intrinsic to life itself. Small changes can cascade into massive ones. It might only have taken the appearance of one or a handful ofpredators to change the world.
