HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2013 ABSTRACT HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Michael Newman The purpose of this project is to examine how the cross-promotional Lego video game series functions as the site of a complex relationship between a major toy manufacturer and several media conglomerates simultaneously to create this series of licensed texts. The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work. -

Ritter) OVERVIEW 1 Designing for an Age of Complexity 11 Computing has added complexity to our lives. The search for machine beauty motivates the transfer of the notion of minimalism from art and music to the design of interactive systems, trying to explain simplicity, and to differentiate paths of reduction. For a concise example, four notions of minimalism are presented and discussed. 2 In Search of ‚Minimalism‘ – Roving in art history, music and elsewhere 21 Examples of works in art, music and literature that were collectively described with the label of Minimalism by contemporary criticism and art history are revisited. This chapter follows a historical rather than a conceptual order and aims not at a single definition of Minimalism, but instead tries to illustrate both the breadth of concepts underlying works characterized as minimal, and the recurrence of attributes of minimal art in different disciplines. 3 A Role for Minimalism in the Use-Centered Design of Interactive Systems 61 Based on these shared aspects of minimalism, four principles, namely functional, structural, constructional and compositional minimalism, are introduced. -

I also briefly cover the Build Your Own Adventure area. How To Use This Guide: Each section in the contents is assigned a tag (#XXXX). Use the find command (Ctrl+F on most PC browsers) and enter the tag. For example, to go directly to Raiders Of The Lost Ark theme, type in #RAID. There are several instances where two or more objects are contained in the same selection, cycling through the choices. In these cases, they are listed together, without a double space. Other times multiple colors of objects are available. These choices are listed in parentheses, as part of the name or at the beginning of the description. Wolf Communication Department, Chair Concordia University Wisconsin 12800 North Lake Shore Drive Mequon, Wisconsin, 53097 [email protected] (262) 243-4262 PROSPECTUS Since the “Automatic Binding Bricks” that LEGO produced in 1949, and the LEGO “System of Play” that began with the release of Town Plan No. 1 (1955), LEGO bricks have gone on to become a global phenomenon, and the favorite building toy of children, as well as many an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO). LEGO has become a medium into which a wide number of media franchises (including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribean, Batman, Superman, Marvel Comics, Lord of the Rings, and more) have adapted their characters, vehicles, props, and settings, and also an artistic medium, as evidenced by the sculptures made by fine artists including Nathan Sawaya, Sean Kenney, Nannan Zhang, Ryan McNaught, Cole Blaq, Henry Lim, and Jonathan Lopes. The LEGO company itself has become a multimedia empire, including LEGO books, movies, television shows, video games, board games, comic books, theme parks, magazines, and even an MMORPG, LEGO Universe (2009). As such, it deserves an examination in Media Studies, and this will be the first academic book devoted to it. The essays in this collection look at a variety of topics related to LEGO, as both a medium, into which other franchises can be adapted, and a transmedial franchise of its own, with extensions in most of the media in existence today. Although each essay looks at a particular aspect of the LEGO phenomenon, topics such as adaptation, representation, paratexts, franchises, and interactivity intersect throughout these essays, and suggest that the study of LEGO as a medium and a media empire is a rich vein which has barely been touched upon in Media Studies. -

LINDMARK ABSTRACT There have been a plethora of analyses on the effects of and brand image of advertising in video games, but a dearth of analyses simply examining the role advertising has played in video games over the years. This study seeks to add to the available research on this topic. This study has yielded a great amount of information which should have pre-dated any analysis of the effects of advertising in video games, or brand placement and recall, and certainly any analysis on purchase intent as a result of interacting or observing brand or product placement in video games.
