Babies come Happy Christmas when they are ready, whether we are ready or not. Christmas comes each year, whether we are ready or not. Birthdays come, (at an alarming rate as you get older), whether we are ready or not. Advent reminds us that Christ is going to come again in glory one day, whether we are ready or not. Are you ready? Because He (Jesus) is Coming, Ready or Not!

Therefore, you also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Matt 24:44

Something bigger than chocolates by Rodney Nicholson “Everyone you know will be eating chocolate for breakfast from 1st December. So says the Hotel Chocolate website which advertises Advent calendars ranging from an £8 children’s version to their Grand edition at £68. If alcohol is more in your line, you could choose a Gin and Tonic Advent Calendar at £95 from John Lewis, or really go to town with a £195 Japanese Whisky option. Those wanting a Beauty Advent Calendar might consider a £35 offer at M&S (conditional on spending £35), a Superdrug possibility for £70 or a Body Shop special at £99.

It’s all rather fun but does not have much to do with Advent as the season when we look forward to the coming of Christ. Interestingly “Advent” used only to be a religious term, with Advent calendars featuring biblical or church themes, but retailers have been quick to grasp the commercial opportunities. Who can blame them? Why just have Christmas? Jesus Christ indeed came once, in flesh and blood – and the world has not been the same since. Thousands upon thousands of men, women and children have experienced his love and peace and joy. Many oth- ers too have known he costliness of following Christ – among them Asia Bibi in Pa- kistan, who constantly risks being savagely murdered. That same Lord Jesus will one day come again in a glorious way which will leave no one in any doubt over who he is. Let’s enjoy our chocolates or G and T or whatever else makes Christmas pleasurable, but let’s make sure that, in our hearts, we are at peace with Christ because, as sure as eggs are eggs, or truffles are truffles, we shall meet with him one day. You could of course enjoy your chocolate AND observe advent AND contribute to Fair Trade. These chocolate advent calendars are available on line, (Real advent calendar 2018) or from some larger supermarkets. It might be too late for this year, but keep it in mind for 2019.

News from Londesborough by Rodney Nicholson The Buddy Holly evening was a great success, raising over £1000 for church funds. At one point it seemed as though there might be a problem get- ting everyone in, but in the event there was space for all and the event was thoroughly enjoyed. Harvest life in Londesborough and Malawi Harvest Festival was another success story, with the Revd Les Slow reminding us of God’s good- ness but also giving examples of disastrous consequences which future generations will suffer unless we take more care of this planet now. The lunch took place in the Reading Room which fostered a more intimate atmosphere than the Concert Hall for such a gathering. Penelope Rowlands and her team provided a superb and varied meal which yielded a profit of £82. Following Christopher Oughtred's trip to Malawi, it was decided that this money should be sent to a charity in that country. Christmas Tree Festival Dianne Core writes: Christmas is nearly upon us and Londesborough is putting on a Christmas tree festival in the church: Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd December. Various charities and businesses are sponsoring a tree. The display is open from 11am to 3pm both days, with teas, coffees, fruit juice and Christmas cake mince pies etc served in the cosy read- ing room. Tickets - £4.00 for adults, children free – are available at the church door. The reason? We have had such a lot of darkness in the news this year and we wanted to remind people that Christmas time is a time of hope and light as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Please come and join us and please feel free to sit and listen to carols which will be playing in the background. Feel free to pray for those you love, and for peace in an increasingly dysfunctional world. Let the love of Christ Jesus surround you for a while as we get ready to face the frenetic noise and commercial side of Christmas. Everyone is sincerely welcome. A happy and peaceful Christmas to all our friends in all the churches in the group and to all our dear friends where ever they are. Poppy Collection The Remembrance time poppy col- lection raised an excellent £187 for the Royal British Legion. Our thanks go to all who supported the vital and much-needed work of this national organisation. Christmas The Londesborough carol service takes place on Sunday 23rd December at 4pm, after which the grand draw will take place. As always, we support The Children’s Society at this event, for which a gift envelope is enclosed. Please support this excellent Christian organisation which tries to help young people running away from domestic violence or abuse, young people who are the main carer for a disabled parent, and young refugees. .There will not be a Christmas Eve service this year but you will be most welcome at another church in the group – or at

News from St Giles Burnby

We would like to pass on our thanks to Georgina Cur- ry, who has kindly donated a seat to ena- ble anyone to enjoy a peaceful moment or a time of quiet re- flection whilst visiting the church or church- yard. Bronnie was pleased to dedicate the seat following a recent service.

Burnby Beauties Shine at St Giles! The ladies of Burnby have been extra busy recently! Following our Harvest Festival service, we enjoyed a lovely bring and share supper and the chance to have a good chat! Thanks to Bronnie for leading the service, Lesley for organising the flowers and everyone who provided food and helped on the night. Sara hosted a Body Shop party on 31 October and donated the sales commission of £60 to church funds. On 2 November we enjoyed a Fashion Show kindly organised by Carol Gray and Louise Walsh. The aisle of St Giles became a catwalk, as our fabu- lous models, Bronnie, Brenda, Louise, Sasha and Holly, displayed the clothes of Piperty. The total of £193.40 was raised. Huge thanks to all those involved. Our Remembrance Day service was well attended, when we enjoyed a poem Sue Woodcock had written especially for the occasion.

Many thanks to everyone who has hosted a coffee morning in the past year. They are a great fundraiser for St Giles and a good opportunity to meet up for a natter!

Dates for your Diary Sunday 2 December 9.15am: Family Communion led by Shelagh Jones, assisted by Bronnie. Friday 7 December 10.30am: Thanks to Jane and Simon Sedcole for hosting this coffee morning. Sykes Farm is an excellent location, being one of the oldest hous- es in the village, and with its beams and quaint windows really lends itself to Christ- mas. Friday 21 December 7.30pm: Carol service with Bucks Fizz welcome drink, plenty of carols and wine, stollen and mince pies to follow. Sunday 6 January 9.15am: All Age Worship led by Bronnie. As always, everyone welcome to join us at St Giles.

Welcome to Warter News Kingswood residential. At the end of our first half term the year 5 and 6 children took part in our residential experience at the Kingswood Centre in Hexham. This is a week of exciting challenges and encounters which the children whole heartedly enjoyed. Many thanks must be given to the staff who accompanied the children for the week: Miss Cun- ningham, Mrs Henworth , Mrs Storrs, Mrs Hollands and Mrs Philip. Here is a flavour of the exciting activities the children achieved.

Remembrance Service The poppy cairn created by Warter school children. On Friday 9th November all the school went to St.James’s Church in Warter to hold our Remem- brance Service which was led by our Warter Worshippers and Canon Rodney. The service began with all the children laying a red poppy stone, which they had created earlier, to form a cairn in the church. This has now become part of the amazing Remembrance display already established in the church. Our moving service was shared by parents and children to remember the last 100 years. Finally this month we will soon be preparing for Christmas with our Carol Service and Nativity in the church on Friday 21st December at 1:30pm. Please come along and join us for this very special service led by the Warter Babies

News from Nunburnholme Remembrance Ringing The Nunburnholme ringing band rand twice on Armistice Day. The first ring at 11.02am was with muffled bells in remembrance of all who lost their lives 100 years ago. At 7.05pm the bells were then rung as part of an interna- tional event ’Ringing for Peace’ involving over 3,000 church- es. As part of an arts/media project Nina, a resident in Nunburnholme, has interviewed some of our band and filmed the ringing on Remembrance Day.

Church yard tidy A small group turned up this time but my goodness they did work hard! Fortunately, due to the constant tidy work carried out twice a year there were not too many tasks to undertake. One person weeded all around the edge of our church building, one weeded the grave stones and the third person tidied the top of the high hedge and brush cut the wild area under the yew trees. He has since returned to mulch the cuttings so the graves in that area can be seen once again. Many thanks to the Tidy Team.

Church Cleaning Team (CCT) Great news, we have one new CCT starting this month but would still appreciate another team of two. This would spread the work- load for everyone involved if we had four teams. So if you love cleaning and have a friend who would be happy to help, actually some of our teams do not love cleaning but they love the church building - so either or both will do, don’t hesitate to contact Ann 304311.

Group Service on Sunday 30th September: In September the Group Service, on the 5th Sunday, in a month was held at Nunburnholme instead of Pocklington All Saints' Church. This is the first time the Holy Communion service has been held outside a Pocklington - so a big challenge for us! We were delighted to see our church looking full with 56 in attendance. It was a lovely service from Shelagh Jones and Mike Bailey.

Harvest Festival Thank you to all the people who dec- orated our church so beautifully. It was lovely to wel- come Mike Bailey back for his second service at St James in as many days! He conducted another lovely service in which the congregation were encouraged to participate by eating different fruits. Afterwards we shared a delicious Harvest Supper.

Wine Tasting at Totterdown Farm on Saturday 1st December 7-10pm. This is a very popular event and a great start to the festive season! There will be a delicious hot supper, lots of wine and excellent company...... Tickets are £25 each, to book your place by text EJ on 07805837275 or ring Ann on 304311. You are warmly invited to our Harvest Festival on Thursday 4th October, 7pm - there will be supper afterwards and contributions of food would be very welcome. Warter School Service The pupils from Warter C of E Primary School joined our con- gregation on Sunday 21st October to celebrate their new school year. The service was conducted by Canon Rodney Nicholson; it was lovely to see so many families and school staff joining in our All Age Worship service.

Natural History Talk It was a delight to see the church packed full for an amazing evening of fascinating infor- mation about our much loved red kite population in Bratt Wood from Nigel Puckrin who is a good friend of our vil- lage. Nigel showed a selection of photographs explain- ing how to identify juveniles from adult birds; he talked about his experience of tracking specific birds, and his long association with the Harewood Estate where red kites were introduced in 1994. The first kites to populate Bratt Wood were from the Howard Estate. Today in Nun- burnholme over 70 kites have been observed roosting but, due to increased numbers, they are not tracked any- more. Nigel runs the Yorkshire Red Kite Society, he fielded a selection of interesting questions afterwards. Jason Dowsett, who lives in the village and is a keen ornithologist, told us many unknown facts about the swifts who populate our village in a few short summer months each year. He explained that swifts are quite unique in the bird world, their clos- est relative being the humming bird. Jason described how, if the young are undernour- ished, they have the ability to go into a state of hibernation in order to survive. He talked about their annual migration route and for the first two years of their life a swift never lands, everything they do is during flight including sleep. He explained how we could provide the correct habitat on our houses for the swift, and the possibility of erect- ing a 'swift tower' in Nunburnholme was suggested! Paul Moon, who also lives in the village, displayed his delightful collection of land- scape photographs of the wolds in A3 size and greeting cards, which were for sale. All in all it was a brilliant evening, a special thank you must go to Nigel, Jason and Paul for enlightening us, also our appreciation goes to everyone who supported the event. The Jubilee Committee raised the amazing sum of £225 towards the cost of maintaining the church yard.

News from Shiptonthorpe The Guardians of Our Heritage – Part 12 (Final) All good things come to an end – and none more so than the building work which has restored our village church. The Restoration, Conservation and Development Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with grants from the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust and ChurchCare/Wolfson Foundation, as well as by our local businesses and community, has run its course. And so has this series of articles which has been prepared over the past 2 years. The church structure is now in much better shape and, with a new disabled-access toilet and kitchenette, the building is so much more “fit for purpose”. It is a more welcoming place for church services, weddings, baptisms, funerals and private prayer during the week and at weekends. It now provides a better environment for community activities and events. And we have the new stained glass memorial window in the north aisle, sponsored by the family of the late Bernard and Muriel Phillips. It was a great pleasure to see so many people from the village and elsewhere coming along to our re-dedication on Sunday, 4 November. The Archdeacon of led the service, with our village ministry team of Revd Shelagh Jones and Lay Minister (Reader) Mike Bailey assisting. It was good to see previous churchwardens, our recently retired Pocklington Vicar and those who contributed to the completed project coming along to the re-opening of the church. And both the new toilet and kitchenette were put to good use! Over the next few months and years, no doubt more work will still be needed as the restoration and maintenance work is a never- ending task. But for the moment, for one last time, the Church Council thanks all our neighbours who have had to bear the brunt of all this building work. This 2-Year series of articles was prepared by Steve Jones

Remembrance Day saw another full church—young and old came to reflect and , remember. WW1, WW2 The Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan. The 2 minute silence was observed, even by a 2 yearold

.Looking forward to Christmas … With the wonderful Re-dedication Service and Remembrance event and service, lots of you have been into church and seen all the new facili- ties. Thank you for support in so many ways. We have some exciting plans for the lead up to Christmas: details of our services and other events are on the back page of this Link. This year we are introducing a new service and a new venture. The new service is on Sunday 2 December at 10.45am, an Advent Sunday ser- vice full of light (and lights) and hope, as the Church begins its preparations for the great celebrations of Christmas. The new venture, on Saturday 15 December 2- 4pm, made possible by all our new facilities, is a Children’s Christmas Workshop, for children aged 5-14 (younger children are welcome, but an adult will need to stay too). There’ll be games, craft and a fun way of exploring what the Bible really tells us about Jesus’ birth. Offers of help most welcome. For further details, please contact Shelagh Jones on (871612 or 07971 054674 The problems in Syria continue and in January we’ll be having another clothes collection for the displaced people of Syria. So, if you’re having a pre/post Christmas clothes clear-out, please bear this good cause in mind. Further details as soon as we know them. Please also note that from December, Friday Morning Prayer moves to 9am. Wishing you a richly blessed Christmas. Shelagh Jones

On the 10th November The Shiptonthorpe Heritage Project delivered a first class concert for Remembrance. A full church pondered on reflections in prose and poetry and we were entertained by our very own version of the D Day Darlings. All of this was enhanced by the Son et Lumiere projection. Unfortunately there are no photos as the church was in darkness. A very generous retiring offering yielded £305 for church funds. Thank you.

News from Millington Remembrance Sunday A special service was made even more so by the attendance of the family of Thomas Wilson. Tom was killed in the First World War but, because his young wife and two children had moved to Millington whilst he was away fighting, his name had not been mentioned on a local memorial. Thanks to Joy Hadley there is now a transportable memorial recognising his service hanging in the chancel. The church looked resplendent thanks to the floral arrangements created by Sandra Burley. Churches in the Benefice

Visitors to the church can now be guided to all the other churches in the Benefice thanks to the Informative display hanging in the porch created by Joy Hadley. Thanks to all those who contributed information. It is hoped that all the churches will benefit from an increased footfall.

Millington’s Heritage An inaugural meeting was held in the Village Hall to begin, what is hoped to be, a lasting archive of church and village history. It is planned to have a rolling display in the church where villagers and visitors can look back over the years. Thanks to the comprehensive record -keeping of Mrs Lynn Berriman the venture has got off to a positive start but any contributions - factual or anecdotal would be gratefully re- ceived (please get in contact with Sylvia Sheard on 01759 304 783). Carol Service As in the past three years the Carol Service brought the community together with many villagers, from the young to the young at heart taking an active part. The Fogglesyke Band played before and during the service. 16

Heavenly Father, you are the source of all goodness, gen- erosity and love. We thank you for opening the hearts of many to those who are flee- ing for their lives. Help us now to open our arms in welcome and reach out our hands in support. That the desperate may find new hope, and lives torn apart be restored. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who first fled persecu- tion after His birth And at His last triumphed over death. Amen

The generosity of our villagers never ceases to amaze me. Approximately 45 boxes of Hope from Warter School, Shiptonthorpe and Londesborough have joined hun- dreds of others from East Yorkshire and are currently wending their way across Europe. The contents of these boxes will bring gifts to those who might otherwise have nothing at Christmas Simple gifts—no i pads or flat screen TVs, but gifts that will give comfort, fun, hygiene and sweets to all ages.

Thank you
