The Littleton Link December 2016/January 2017 Editor’s Letter Hello, Welcome to this double edition of the Littleton Link. The contents of this edition really does showcase the huge variety of events, talents and community group activities which take place in the villages throughout the year. A big thank you to all of you who contribute items for inclusion in the Link each month which can then be shared with the community. The photo on the cover is another winning entry from the photo competition held by St Michaels Church, South Littleton. This photo won the first prize in the under 16s age group and was taken by Indya Stephens. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Littletons’ Wednesday Club I just don’t know where the year has gone here I am reporting for the last Link of 2016. October 26th. There were 26 members for the return visit of Rosemary and Bas two local photographers with many interests and this afternoon we were on a natural visit to Africa. To reach Tanzania Rosemary and Bas flew by 2 regional planes. On their first morning they were woken up by 2 yellow- necked love birds (much better than an alarm clock me thinks). On their first visit several years ago the roads were just muddy tracks now their surface is tarmac. We were shown a photo of a white backed vulture followed by a LION up a TREE. The lesson learnt from this photo was, when you visit Africa and need to escape from a lion DO NOT climb up a tree. We then saw the lioness with her cubs. Elephants always gather in families and the babies are protected by being in the middle of the herd. On one of their visits Bas and Rosemary met a tribe of local natives and they were bare and lived in the open. This time they were covered similar to saris but less material and they were living in mud huts. They had an arrow as a weapon which proved to be lethal. There was an unexpected disturbance and the arrow was fired and in less than 30 seconds the victim was dead. The river bed was dry but there was a puddle not far away and a little boy drank from it after animals had been walking in it and drinking from it in addition to their bodily functions. We saw a great variety of birds which included, a hoo poe, black-shouldered kite, glossy-backed starling, a lilac-breasted roller, grey-crowned crane, black-eared fox, wildebeest, Sacred elbis, common quail, cardinal woodpecker, giraffe, banded mongoose, golden mongoose and when the group stopped for breakfast they saw a 16’python. My list of what we saw on the screen continues; grey kestrel, saddle-bill stork, tawny eagle, jackal, impala, (antelope) a cheetah which proved to be a mum with 3 sons, long-tailed mongoose, cordon bleu, bar-faced goway bird, and a courting water-backed lizard. A zebra was spotted at 6am. Grass is harvested for the roofs of their huts and this was the ladies’ job. The blacksmith collects metal from broken down cars to make spears to kill animals (and occasionally members other tribes) At the Masai camp, the children need to know 2 languages before they can move school. Near the water we saw wildebeest, crocodiles, ground-corn bill pelican, maribou, storks, cape buffalo which strong and powerful enough to overturn 4-wheels, and last on my list (you hope if you’ve read this far) a bee-eater hyena. You must understand that these beautiful birds and out of this world animals have to be seen to be believed. “Names on a post card please if you would like to join our African safari” November 9th. The tables were laid and decorated with poppers, chains and crackers ready for the arrival of our guests. There were 32 members 2 guests and 7 chef/cooks/helpers sitting down for Wednesday Club’s Birthday/ Christmas dinner. On arrival diners were offered a choice of white wine, sherry, H2O, and a choice of 2 canned beers/shandy. The 4-course meal was turkey, roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, carrots, sprouts, pigs in blankets and gravy. The delicious pudding was home-made apple crumble and custard which followed by cheese and a selection of biscuits with butter with either tea or coffee. Our entertainer sang a few songs but happened to choose one that invited them to join in. Several of the good old ones followed, it’s a Long Way to Tipperary, I’ll Be Seeing you, There’ll be Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover and our diners were singing with gusto. The beautiful cake was placed on a table and Marion lit the candles. Kath Scott who has a special birthday on November 19th. was asked to cut the cake. She was rather surprised but very pleased to do so. We sang Happy Birthday to her and the cake was taken away to be sliced and yet another cup of tea/coffee was served. One of our members Mary Collins, had a nasty fall while on holiday on I.O W. and is still recovering and had to cancel but a piece of the delicious cake was sent to her. Get well soon Mary we are thinking of you. The cake was made by one of our committee members, Pat Foster. Thank you once again Pat it was (is) delicious. Probably (hopefully) there will be more at our Carol Service. I would also like to thank the ladies who prepared and served our dinner with a special thanks to our “volunteer” Cynthia who guarded the oven and did a bit of shuffling and she was almost chained to the sink with all the washing up (helped with the drying up) Future Programme: We will have filled our 20 shoe boxes for Teams4U.December 7th. Unfortunately quite a few properties in the Littletons Villages had been hit by a power cut but the Village Hall was not one of them and we were welcomed into a lovely warm building with most of our members being able to attend. Following the singing of Jerusalem, the usual monthly business was dealt with, the Treasurer, Secretary and President giving their reports for the year. Thank yous were given to all those who had helped run the Group during the year, everyone having some sort of roll to play. A special thank you was given to Daisy Witts who is standing down as Treasurer having completed her three years in this roll and to Benita Findley who is the shining light behind our website (www.thelittletonswi.moonfruit.com). Our WI Adviser, Suzanne Owen, took over the meeting to handle the nitty gritty of the election. She started, however, by telling us a bit about herself, her life on a small farm on the outskirts of Worcester and her time with the WI. She did not give us a talk on the WI as such, but raised subjects to which members were able to put their points of view and all in all it was a very constructive meeting. She then asked that all members who had offered to be on the Committee stand to make sure they were known to all members and then voting commenced. Two of the proposed Committee Members were unable to attend but as they were not standing for President it did not preclude them from election. Each member was given a slip of paper on which to write their vote for President and June Lloyd was re-elected for a second term. The competition for the evening was “My Favourite Recipe” and some/all of these will appear on our website at some time over the coming year.
