The Littleton Link

December 2016/January 2017 Editor’s Letter

Hello, Welcome to this double edition of the Littleton Link. The contents of this edition really does showcase the huge variety of events, talents and community group activities which take place in the villages throughout the year. A big thank you to all of you who contribute items for inclusion in the Link each month which can then be shared with the community.

The photo on the cover is another winning entry from the photo competition held by St Michaels Church, South Littleton. This photo won the first prize in the under 16s age group and was taken by Indya Stephens.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Littletons’ Wednesday Club

I just don’t know where the year has gone here I am reporting for the last Link of 2016. October 26th. There were 26 members for the return visit of Rosemary and Bas two local photographers with many interests and this afternoon we were on a natural visit to Africa. To reach Tanzania Rosemary and Bas flew by 2 regional planes. On their first morning they were woken up by 2 yellow- necked love birds (much better than an alarm clock me thinks). On their first visit several years ago the roads were just muddy tracks now their surface is tarmac. We were shown a photo of a white backed vulture followed by a LION up a TREE. The lesson learnt from this photo was, when you visit Africa and need to escape from a lion DO NOT climb up a tree. We then saw the lioness with her cubs. Elephants always gather in families and the babies are protected by being in the middle of the herd. On one of their visits Bas and Rosemary met a tribe of local natives and they were bare and lived in the open. This time they were covered similar to saris but less material and they were living in mud huts. They had an arrow as a weapon which proved to be lethal. There was an unexpected disturbance and the arrow was fired and in less than 30 seconds the victim was dead. The river bed was dry but there was a puddle not far away and a little boy drank from it after animals had been walking in it and drinking from it in addition to their bodily functions. We saw a great variety of birds which included, a hoo poe, black-shouldered kite, glossy-backed starling, a lilac-breasted roller, grey-crowned crane, black-eared fox, wildebeest, Sacred elbis, common quail, cardinal woodpecker, giraffe, banded mongoose, golden mongoose and when the group stopped for breakfast they saw a 16’python. My list of what we saw on the screen continues; grey kestrel, saddle-bill stork, tawny eagle, jackal, impala, (antelope) a cheetah which proved to be a mum with 3 sons, long-tailed mongoose, cordon bleu, bar-faced goway bird, and a courting water-backed lizard. A zebra was spotted at 6am. Grass is harvested for the roofs of their huts and this was the ladies’ job. The blacksmith collects metal from broken down cars to make spears to kill animals (and occasionally members other tribes) At the Masai camp, the children need to know 2 languages before they can move school. Near the water we saw wildebeest, crocodiles, ground-corn bill pelican, maribou, storks, cape buffalo which strong and powerful enough to overturn 4-wheels, and last on my list (you hope if you’ve read this far) a bee-eater hyena. You must understand that these beautiful birds and out of this world animals have to be seen to be believed. “Names on a post card please if you would like to join our African safari” November 9th. The tables were laid and decorated with poppers, chains and crackers ready for the arrival of our guests. There were 32 members 2 guests and 7 chef/cooks/helpers sitting down for Wednesday Club’s Birthday/ Christmas dinner. On arrival diners were offered a choice of white wine, sherry, H2O, and a choice of 2 canned beers/shandy. The 4-course meal was turkey, roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, carrots, sprouts, pigs in blankets and gravy. The delicious pudding was home-made apple crumble and custard which followed by cheese and a selection of biscuits with butter with either tea or coffee. Our entertainer sang a few songs but happened to choose one that invited them to join in. Several of the good old ones followed, it’s a Long Way to Tipperary, I’ll Be Seeing you, There’ll be Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover and our diners were singing with gusto. The beautiful cake was placed on a table and Marion lit the candles. Kath Scott who has a special birthday on November 19th. was asked to cut the cake. She was rather surprised but very pleased to do so. We sang Happy Birthday to her and the cake was taken away to be sliced and yet another cup of tea/coffee was served. One of our members Mary Collins, had a nasty fall while on holiday on I.O W. and is still recovering and had to cancel but a piece of the delicious cake was sent to her. Get well soon Mary we are thinking of you. The cake was made by one of our committee members, Pat Foster. Thank you once again Pat it was (is) delicious. Probably (hopefully) there will be more at our Carol Service. I would also like to thank the ladies who prepared and served our dinner with a special thanks to our “volunteer” Cynthia who guarded the oven and did a bit of shuffling and she was almost chained to the sink with all the washing up (helped with the drying up) Future Programme: We will have filled our 20 shoe boxes for Teams4U.December 7th. Littletons WI

November sees Littletons WI Annual Meeting with the election of a new President and Committee. Unfortunately quite a few properties in the Littletons Villages had been hit by a power cut but the Village Hall was not one of them and we were welcomed into a lovely warm building with most of our members being able to attend.

Following the singing of Jerusalem, the usual monthly business was dealt with, the Treasurer, Secretary and President giving their reports for the year. Thank yous were given to all those who had helped run the Group during the year, everyone having some sort of roll to play. A special thank you was given to Daisy Witts who is standing down as Treasurer having completed her three years in this roll and to Benita Findley who is the shining light behind our website (www.thelittletonswi.moonfruit.com).

Our WI Adviser, Suzanne Owen, took over the meeting to handle the nitty gritty of the election. She started, however, by telling us a bit about herself, her life on a small farm on the outskirts of Worcester and her time with the WI. She did not give us a talk on the WI as such, but raised subjects to which members were able to put their points of view and all in all it was a very constructive meeting. She then asked that all members who had offered to be on the Committee stand to make sure they were known to all members and then voting commenced. Two of the proposed Committee Members were unable to attend but as they were not standing for President it did not preclude them from election. Each member was given a slip of paper on which to write their vote for President and June Lloyd was re-elected for a second term.

The competition for the evening was “My Favourite Recipe” and some/all of these will appear on our website at some time over the coming year. The recipes were not judged by members but four points were given to all participants. All our entries from the Annual Council Meeting at Malvern were on display for members who were unable to attend on the day to view and final plans were made for our Christmas Party next month. After our usual appetizing supper Carole Duce showed us some new items from her fabulous collection of pop-up books including a dolls house and various ones based on children’s books (this writer intends to re- read the Little Mermaid as she feels she had completely overlooked its dark undertones when younger).

Before our next meeting we are having a stall at the Village Hall Christmas Fayre on 29th November with the WI’s usual home made cakes and preserves. Our next regular meeting is on Tuesday, 10th January, 2017 when our speaker will be demonstrating how to wrap presents (including a bottle!) – all ready for Christmas 2017. Guests and new members are, as always, very welcome. For further information contact June Lloyd on 01386 830844. See also www.littletonswi.moonfruit.com

My name is David and I am the County Mobile Librarian. Many of you may not be aware that the mobile library visits in your area and many other rural areas of Worcestershire each calendar month.

The mobile stocks a wide range of adult fiction and non-fiction, large print books, local history, spoken word CDs, DVDs and music CDs. There is also a selection of children’s books from pre-school to teenage. New borrowers can join on the mobile without having to visit a main library and reservations can be made and collected from the mobile on the next visit or sent to any other library. In addition, items that are issued from other sites can be returned to the mobile and you can also return mobile loans to any other county library. The existing mobile has been in service for two years and offers a pleasant, bright environment with full disabled access.

The mobile library visits the Littletons on the 4th Tuesday of each month at the following stops:

 North Littleton – The Ivy Inn 10:20 to 10:35  North Littleton – Blakes Hill 10:40 to 10:55  Middle Littleton – Village Hall 11:00 to 11:15  South Littleton – Shinehill Lane 11:45 to 12:00

On Friday 11th November we held a Service of Remembrance. We welcomed parents who are serving members of the armed services as our special guests. During the service, members of The School Council told us why we celebrate Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies. We held a 2 minutes silence and said prayers for peace. It was also a chance to admire our Poppy display.

December 2016 Dear Friends By now you will have noticed that Christmas music has been playing in the shops since early November, so it will be of little surprise to know that the churches are gearing up for our Christmas celebrations. But before we get to Christmas, we have the season of Advent, which started on the last Sunday of November. Advent is a season of reflection and waiting, and traditionally the churches remain undecorated until our Christmas celebrations begin. The purpose of Advent is to give us some space to reflect on our need for God in our lives, and the expectation that God is about to do something new and creative. It generates a sense of anticipation, so that when Christmas finally arrives it’s a great and joyous event. So with that in mind, please do check the magazines for events and services taking place in your local church over the Christmas season. You can expect a warm welcome and a great celebration of Jesus’ birth!

South Littleton Parish Council - Update

Welcome to our latest update:

Planning Application on South Meadows - The application for 9 new homes on South Meadows was taken to a planning committee on Thursday 20th October. This meeting was attended by myself and Paul Spain (representing the Parish Council) and Charlie (representing residents). - Our aim was to get the application deferred until we had a better understanding of the drainage issues and until revised parking plans had been submitted. - The committee deliberated for over an hour but unfortunately we lost the appeal 9 votes to 4. This means that the application will be going ahead as planned. - We were able to add some conditions to the application so although it wasn't the exact outcome we had hoped for, it was still a worthwhile visit. - We have also reached out to both Severn Trent and the developer to discuss the issues.

Street Lighting - The public consultation takes place on Thursday 3rd November at the Scout Hut from 5pm. - Our suggested supplier will be on hand to demonstrate the new lights, explain the benefits they will bring and to answer any questions. - The purpose of the evening is for residents to agree to our proposals so that we can agree funding and a start date for the project to begin.

Playground on South Meadows - The public consultation above will also include a proposal for a new children’s playground on South Meadows. - Your opinions on the evening will help us to choose where it will be placed, who it will cater for and what it should include.

Website - The Parish website is currently being upgraded. - We have a test version already available and we are now in the process of finalising the design. - We hope to have the new website available from early 2017.

Pavements - A concern was raised by a resident regarding the state of the footpath on Long Hyde Road. - This was taken up by our County Councillor Alastair Adams and he has been able to agree a repair with County Council and has also brought the date forward for this repair to 2017. - We are unsure exactly when in 2017 this will take place but of course we will be pushing for the earliest possible date.

Planters - We have agreed a budget for the village planters so you should see some winter flowers in them soon.

Christmas Event - The Christmas event will take place on the rec by the Scout Hut this year. - We have agreed a date of Saturday 17th December at 5pm. - There will be music, carols, mince pies and all sorts of festive fun so please join us for this great community event.

Please let us know if you have any suggestions, questions or concerns relating to South Littleton.

The next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday 17th November at 7.30pm.

South Littleton Parish Council - Update Welcome to our latest update: Planning Application on South Meadows/Long Lartin - The application for 9 new homes is now showing as approved on the website. - The approval comes with 10 conditions ranging from hours of access to drainage. - We have also received plans for further development on the other parcels of land that are owned by Chevin Homes. These provisional plans include the construction of a convenience store as well as 4 further homes. - These plans have not been formally submitted to Wychavon yet and so we are unable to comment further.

Street Lighting - Thank you to those that attended the public consultation in November. - The feedback on the lights was overwhelmingly positive and we are now in a position to move forward. - The committee responsible for the street lighting project will be meeting in early December to discuss the next steps.

Playground on South Meadows - Again, thank you to those that attended the consultation evening and to those that provided feedback, both on the evening and via the questionnaires. - There were mixed responses on the placement and suitable age range. The next steps are now in the hands of the independent committee.

Youth Bus - We were joined at the monthly Parish meeting by Robin who represents the Wychavon Youth Bus. - The bus is usually in the area on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. - Official dates, times and further information can be found on their Facebook page, in their newsletter or on the Wychavon website.

Litter Pick - Thank you to Paul Spain who completed a litter pick in the village. - We plan to arrange a community clean up in Spring 2017.

Planters - The winter flowers are now in the village planters.

Defibrillator - The defibrillator on the side of the shop was used for the first time at the end of October. - We would encourage all residents to familiarise themselves with the position of both defibrillator units and how to use them. Allotments - The brook has been cleared the trees trimmed back.

Precept - Early 2017 will involve our annual precept meeting. This is where we agree our priorities for the year ahead and the budget that we require to implement those actions. This meeting will have a direct impact on the amount of council tax you pay in 2017. - If you have any suggestions on what the Parish Council should be focussing on during 2017, please let us know by the end of the year.

The next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday 15th December at 7.30pm.

The Littletons School sports day finishes with gold On the 23 Jun 2016 The Littletons School held its annual sports day. The weather graciously remained fair for yet another year and allowed for some spectacular racing from some of the Vales athletic talent of the future. As a finale to the days sporting efforts the children were presented with iced lollies and special commemorative coins to celebrate the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The coins were championed and funded in a collaboration between all Parish Councils within the Littletons area. It was an honour to represent the partnership of the Councils and to be able to present the coins to the children. On behalf of the Parish Councils I would like to thank the Headteacher Mrs Helen Brambani and her staff for setting aside some time in what was already a busy afternoon of racing. Weather stays nice for the presentation.
