| 1 , SHELLEY’S“ADONAIS” AS A PASTORAL ELEGY(1) Terufumi KIDO This paper aims chieny to discuss some salient featuresof “Adonais” by Percy Bysshe Shelley as an English pastoral elegy such as John Milton’s “Lycidas” and Matthew Arnold’s “Thyrsis.”lt is we11-known that the poem was written to mourn over the premature death of John Keats in Rome in February, 1821.For a full understanding and appreciation of “Adonais” it may be desirable to have some knowledge of Greek myth centering on the Adonis legend, the tradition of pastoral elegy, Shelley’s view of Keats and his works, and Shelley’s antipathy toward his contemporary reviewer of literary creation. Although “Shelley’s selection ofthe word ‘Adonais’ remains a matter of conjecture” l there is an interesting and persuasivereference to the title.“The change from Adonis to Adonais was an inspired piece of word-coining. The extra vowel creates a richer and more gracious flavour. The long-drawn final synables add an elegiac undertone, and ‘Adonis’seerns curt and flat after‘Adonais.’The ダ ダmetrical problems too are eased by the extra stress - Adonais instead of Adonls. ダ ・ 。2 ltis certain that; the title“Adonais” comes from the name of a beautiful youth,Adonis beloved by Aphrodite, the goddess of love ,beauty and fertility in Greek myth. The Adonis legend is known as follows: When Adonis was killed by a wild boar, the grief of the goddess moved Persephone, Queen of Hades, to allow him to spend six months of the year on earth and six in the underworld. -

A Note on Thomas Gray's Elegy
A NOTE ON THOMAS GRAY'S ELEG Y By CHUJI MIYASHITA* I Reading Thomas Gray's poems and letters in chronological order,1 when I came to the Elegy written in a Country Church- Ya7~d (1751), I was deeply impressed that something that had been long troubling him in the innermost part of his mind was finally settled when he wrote the poem. What was the something that troubled him ? What sufferings did the Elegy settle ? Needless to say the Elegy is one of the most important works in eighteenth century English literature. There is no history of English literature that does not make any comment on the poem, and we have a number of critical essays and monographs on it. Yet most of the literary historians, though understanding the importance of the poem in the history of English poetry, stop explaining their appreciation and criticism halfway. They admire the fine descriptions of the English evening scene, the feeling towards the fate of death common to all people, the grand style with its dignified and sonorous rhythm of iambic pentameter and apt imageries ; then they turn their attention to the melancholic emotion implied in the poem, and to the democratic thought hinted in the notion that death falls on everybody, rich and poor, high and low, which prematurely reflects the transition of thought in the English society at the time ; until at last they almost unanimously go back to the famous observation of Dr. Johnson : "In the character of his Elegy I rejoice to concur with the common reader ; for by the common sense of readers uncorrupted with literary prejudices, after all the refinements of subtlety and the dogmatism of learning, must be finally decided all claim to poetical hon- ours. -

University i ABSTRACT Elegiac Form and Imagery in Three Modernist Works by Finuala Dowling T. s. Eliot's The Waste Land, Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, and D.B. Lawrence's The Rainbow were conceived or written within the same decade 1915 - 1925, and to a large extent their shared elegiac mood is based upon the events of these years. At the start of this period, as England turned increasingly to the notions of nationhood and social cohesion, these writers reflected instead a sense of disintegration and spirituality. They were sensitive to the disruption caused by the war and to the radical changes that had taken place in cultural life. This thesis probes the elegiac mood that characterized their reac tion, a mood distinguished by nostalgia for a shattered past, and the drive to reconst rue t. -

English 12: British Literature and Composition Pastoral Poetry Notes Standards: ELABLRL1 – The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events, main ideas, and characteristics) in poetry and uses this evidence as the basis for interpretation. ELABLRL3 - The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods. Bloom’s Taxonomy Levels: Knowing and Understanding Pastoral poetry depicts country life in idyllic, idealized terms. The term pastoral derives from the Latin word that means shepherd, and originally, pastorals were about rural life, shepherds, and nymphs (minor divinities of nature in classical mythology represented as beautiful maidens dwelling in the mountains, forests, trees, and waters). Pastoral poetry contains the following elements: Idealized setting In pastoral poems, the environment of rural life is idealized--time is always spring or summer; shepherds are young and enjoy a life of song and love; and the sheep seem to take care of themselves. Mood Renaissance poets did not use the pastoral form to accurately and realistically portray rustic life but to convey their own emotions and ideas about life and love. The mood of the poem is the overall feeling that the poem evokes, or causes in the reader. Tone Tone is the attitude the speaker takes toward his or her subject. Dialogue Though these two poems are by different authors, they function as a pair with the two speakers talking directly to one another. Responding to Marlowe’s poem, Raleigh pretends to take each of the shepherd’s idealized promises about pastoral life literally and then allows the nymph to prove each promise to be empty or incapable of fulfillment due to the harsh reality of rural life. -
