A fan recalls John Cougar riding on Kenny Aranoff’s shoulders during ‘Hurts So Good’. During the Loverboy set, it was so hot that security had to spray the crowd with firehoses. When the Mac played Gypsy virtually the enKre crowd lit their cigareLe lighters. Stevie didn’t finish the !song because she was too emoKonal that night. Sept. 5, 1982 – San Bernardino, CA The band closed the third and final day of the US FesKval by playing their Mirage set. The order of arKsts on the bill was as follows: Grateful Dead, Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmy Buffet, Jackson Browne, and then Fleetwood Mac. This was also the last Kme that Mick Fleetwood saw Stevie’s friend Robin Anderson, who later passed away from leukaemia. She was very ill at the show and had to be !helicoptered out of the venue. It might apply to the weight of your take on the blues, as with Fleetwood Mac or Led Zeppelin. It might mean the originality of Jethro Tull or King Crimson. It might equally apply to an individual- to Eric Clapton, for example, The Beatles are the saints of the 1960s, and George Harrison an especially "heavy person". This year, heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Supergroups, or more informal supersessions, serve as musical summit meetings for those who are reluctant to have theirwork tied down by the now antiquated notion of the "group". Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars The Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing - how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? The Beatles diversification has become problematic.

Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

On the Cover Juju Ruiz is a union sheet metal apprentice currently working on installing ductwork for the new BART headquarters near Lake Merritt in Oakland. Although she loved the idea of working in construction, she was unsure about how to pursue this career path. After enrolling and graduating from Rising Sun Center for Opportunity’s all-female MC3 pre-apprenticeship program, Women Building the Bay, Juju felt prepared to enter the construction trades. Now, she feels empowered as a mother and career woman to support her family doing work that she is passionate about. Dear Valued Community Members, Far too many people in the Bay Area are unaware of career opportunities in the union construction trades. As the non-profit partner of the Building and Construction Trades Councils in Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa and Solano counties, Construction Trades Workforce Initiative (CTWI) is the regional leader in bridging the gap between organized labor and community stakeholders.

  • Some Advice for Phone-Addicted Youth Who Want To
The Roots Report: Look What’s Going Down: Artists have a duty to voice their opinions Okee dokee folks… “It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down.” This is from one of the most famous protest songs ever written, “For What It’s Worth,” by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). It was written more than 50 years ago in response to the Sunset Strip curfew riots in California and is still revered as one of the best songs of that generation. A few years later, Neil Young wrote his song “Ohio” about the Kent State shootings. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young quickly recorded this song, and when it was released as a single, it was backed with another Stephen Stills protest anthem “Find The Cost Freedom.” At the time, “Ohio” was banned by some radio stations, but today it is one of the few actual protest songs still being played on radio. These songs, the bands and the writers were major inspirations and influences for me as a musician and songwriter. Not only do I perform “Ohio” with my band Forever Young and “For What It’s Worth” when I play solo, but I have written many sociopolitical songs of my own that are part of my body of solo work. I feel protest songs need to be written, but they are the hardest type of song to get right. They need to express the concern and anger of the subject matter and marry it perfectly with a melody to make the song viable.

  • MTO 21.1: Hough, Elements of Style in Stevie Nicks
Volume 21, Number 1, March 2015 Copyright © 2015 Society for Music Theory Elements of Style in Three Demo Recordings by Stevie Nicks Matthew T. Hough NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.15.21.1/mto.15.21.1.hough.php KEYWORDS: rock, pop, harmony, composition, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac ABSTRACT: This article examines demo recordings of three songs by Stevie Nicks in terms of compositional style and in relation to conventions of rock harmony. Sections from two of Nicks’ unreleased solo demo recordings are compared to publicly released versions of the same songs, revealing distinctive stylistic elements and their subsequent normalization. Compositional applications for rock music based on structural and contrapuntal techniques found in these demo recordings are also presented. Received January 2015 Introduction [1.1] Stephanie “Stevie” Nicks (b. 1948 in Phoenix, Arizona) is one of rock’s best known female performers of the last fifty years. Despite her many decades of fame, investigation into Nicks’ work as a composer remains scarce. This is perhaps not due to a lack of interest; her close association with numerous collaborators—most notably, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and other members of the band Fleetwood Mac—often makes pinpointing Nicks’ individual compositional traits difficult. As released to the public, Nicks’ songs invariably contain significant contributions from these collaborators in the form of instrumental or vocal arrangements and production. Recently, examples of Nicks’ unreleased demo recordings have begun to appear on YouTube and various file-sharing sites. In many of these recordings, Nicks is heard singing and playing a keyboard instrument without additional accompaniment.
