Please link to this material at ctnofa.org/HealthyFarms from your website, and let us know you have done so! In Connecticut healthy food is available everywhere. Did you know that Connecticut has over 3,800 crop farms and 1,500 livestock farms producing virtually all the types of foods it’s recommended we eat? And every year more Connecticut Grown food is available every season of the year. Connecticut Grown foods can be found right at the farms, in retail stores and at farmers markets. They include fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. We can pay with dollars or we can pay with SNAP or FMNP benefits. In Connecticut we have Healthy Farms, Healthy Food, and we can have Healthy People! Who recommends what we eat and why? No matter who is talking to us, author Michael Pollan or the Department of Agriculture (USDA), or in articles we read about cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, the information all sounds the same! We should eat from every food group, in certain proportions, and often less than we think we need to eat. What we eat directly effects our health:“The CDC has designated...improvements in nutrition and physical activity, as“Winnable Battles” in efforts to improve the health of Americans and reduce the prevalence and severity of chronic diseases. In Connecticut, chronic diseases account for 6 out of 10 of the leading causes of death...” - Healthy Connecticut 2020: 2. State Health Improvement Plan, CT Department of Public Health

How much of each food group should I be eating? “Eat Food. Not A Lot. Mostly Plants” - Michael Pollan “Make half your plate fruits and vegetables” - USDA The amount of each food group you need to eat depends on your age, sex, and level of physical activity. For the USDA’s information on recommended total daily and weekly amounts, go to choosemyplate.gov/food-groups.

Eating in Season “Seasonal foods offer a natural diversity that we should take advantage of when eating holistically for both our health and the health of our planet.” - Eatlocalgrown.com Seasonal eating is possible all year long in Connecticut, thanks to farmers extending the season and even producing in winter with methods such as growing in high tunnels. “..Eating healthy may seem harder come fall, when favorite produce options dwindle and less familiar ones appear. Never fear. Now that warm months are gone -- and with them the berries, corn and other produce we find easier to incorporate into our diets -- a new menu of foods is available to keep you healthy and happy.” - CNN Health

Make Healthy Eating Fun! • Eat A Rainbow! “Eating fruits and vegetables of different colors gives your body a wide range of valuable nutrients, like fiber, folate, potassium, and vitamins A and C.” - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) • Spend a day picking your own fruits and vegetables. • Mix up your proteins with choices ranging from beans and peas to meat and poultry. • Visit one of many community farms in Connecticut. 18 2015-2016 Farm & Food Guide Dining Out Farm to Plate and Bottle Making local food and drink choices doesn’t have to end at your front door! Going out provides delicious and fun opportunities to eat and drink well and support our local farmers at the same time. Restaurants, dining services, breweries and vineyards throughout our state are making local ingredients their first choice in providing superior food and drink and supporting Connecticut farmers. More and more often we are finding the farm and restaurant, dining hall, brewery or winery together on one site, one of the many exciting aspects of the local Farm to Plate and Farm to Bottle movements in Connecticut. Know Your Farmer, Know Your Restaurateur With Farm to Table popping up on countless menus, consumers are asking how they can tell if a restaurant or food service is sourcing from our local Connecticut farms. The best way is to establish relationships with your farmers, as well as with your dining destinations. Farmers will proudly tell you which restaurants and dining services they’re selling to and restaurants will let you know who they are buying from. This 2015-2016 CT NOFA Farm & Food Guide has that information for some of the farms and restaurants listed in the County pages beginning on page 25, and you can also learn directly from the farms and eating establishments you patronize. While menus and websites may also provide some information, the very best way is to really get to know your farmers and restaurateurs. Find out from them how current their information is, what is being provided from Connecticut farms in each season of the year, and how it is being grown. Restaurants and dining services sourcing from Connecticut farms, or growing themselves, may use USDA Certified Organic, CT NOFA Farmer’s Pledge and/or non-organic products. Sourcing locally doesn’t always mean the food is organic or Farmer’s Pledge. So learn from your farmers and restaurateurs and make informed dining decisions that match your priorities and expectations.

ctnofa.org organiclandcare.net 203-308-2584 21 Farm to Bottle - A Growing Trend! As Connecticut’s knowledgeable dining audience continues to embrace the Farm to Table and local food movements, these same values are inspiring us to look beyond the plate and recognize the outstanding producers of wine and craft beers in our very own backyard. Small craft breweries are popping up in every corner of the state but until now there has been a lack of Connecticut farms growing hops to supply our world-class brewers. Farms are beginning to grow an increasing supply of USDA Certified Organic, CT NOFA Farmer’s Pledge and other hops to service their own farm brewery or other local brewers. As with other products local doesn’t necessarily mean organic, so if it’s organic you’re looking for talk to your hops farmer and brewer. In order to support local food, drink and agriculture, remember to think local when searching for the perfect Cabernet or Pale Ale to pair with your local grass fed steak, both at home and when dining out. And please remember to support the farms, supporting businesses and advertisers included in this 2015-2016 CT NOFA Farm & Food Guide.
