Gleadless Valley Masterplan FAQs

1. What is a masterplan?

A masterplan is a process that happens in order to develop a long term plan for a particular area.

It starts with consultation with the local people, businesses and community organisations to identify the issues and key improvements that are needed in an area.

It then identifies the potential solutions to these issues. These solutions might vary in different parts of the area and some parts might not see any changes at all.

The overall masterplan then pulls all this information together into one single document. The document will then be used to help secure investment for the area.

The completed masterplan will be available for local people.

2. Where has the money for the masterplan come from?

This was awarded to us from central Government’s Department of Communities and Local Government following a successful bid to them from the Council.

3. What is the grant money being spent on?

We want to make sure that the masterplan for Valley helps us improve the neighbourhood for years to come. A good masterplan needs everyone possible to contribute and we want to give people plenty of opportunity to get involved. Some of the money will be used to enable this consultation to be effective.

This will mean organising events, carrying out door knocking and attending local meetings to find out what you think of your area and how you think it could be improved.

We will also need to work closely with people who are experienced in drawing up regeneration plans and setting out options for making the changes happen. We will seek the most cost effective ways of doing this and we will only spend money where it is necessary.

The money (£500,000) for the masterplan has come from central government and it can only be spent on certain activity. It will pay for the work to identify what needs improving, and where and how this can best be done. It won’t pay for the delivery of the solutions identified through the masterplan process.

Having the masterplan will put the Council in a really good position to talk to Government about additional money to put the plans into action, although we may be able to deliver some changes in without additional government funding.

4. How can you get involved in the masterplan?

We want you to hear your views about Gleadless Valley. To do this we are:

 Calling at people’s homes during November to give you the opportunity to complete the Gleadless Valley Residents Survey on your doorstep.  If you are not included or available for a doorstep survey a copy of the Gleadless Valley Residents Survey will be shared online at www..gov.uk/gleadlessvalley and paper copies will be provided in public buildings around the estate. These buildings include Newfield Green Library, Newfield Green Housing Office and Valley Children’s Centre.  Three drop in community events are also being organised for November. At the events you will be able to talk to us about what you think of the estate and be able to complete the survey. Refreshments will be provided and there will activities for children. The Council will advertise these events on its website and posters in the area.  We will also be talking to the local schools, other service providers who work in the area, businesses, health providers and community groups.  Your local Ward Councillors are also involved and you can speak to them about the masterplan at their regular surgeries.

Your local councillors are: Councillor Cate Mcdonald, Councillor Lewis Dagnall and Councillor Chris Peace. Their ward surgeries take place on the:

o 1st Friday of the month from 10.00 am to 12 noon at Gleadless Valley TARA, 7 Plowright Close, S14 1LQ with Cllr Cate McDonald

o 3rd Saturday of the month from 10.00 to 11.00am at City Farm Café, Richards Road, S2 3DT with Cllr Lewis Dagnall

o 4th Thursday of the month from 5.00 till 6.00 pm at Newfield Green Library, Gleadless Road, S2 2BT with Cllr Chris Peace.

 A postal survey called ‘Outside looking in’ will also be sent to a sample of randomly selected addresses in neighbourhoods that are near to Gleadless Valley. This survey will only be available to those we have contacted directly by post.

5. How long will the consultation last?

The first stage of the consultation will be from October 2017 to January 2018. Between spring and summer 2018 we will share what we have learnt so far and ask for further feedback on the plans. There will be a chance to comment and have your say on the draft masterplan before it is finalised towards the end of the year.

6. Who are we consulting?

We want to hear from the people that live and work in Gleadless Valley, and also from people that live close to Gleadless Valley.

Only people that live in Gleadless Valley can complete the ‘Gleadless Valley Residents’ survey.

7. Where are we consulting?

Most of the consultation will focus on the Gleadless Valley estate and include the neighbourhoods of Hemsworth and Herdings. A map of the consultation area can be found at www.sheffield.gov.uk/gleadlessvalley.

Some residents in the neighbourhoods of Arbouthorne, Gleadless, Heeley, Charnock and Norton may also receive a survey through the post. This is because we want to gather the views of people that live near to Gleadless Valley.

8. Why is this happening in Gleadless Valley and why not in other areas?

Parts of Gleadless Valley fall into the 10% most deprived neighbourhoods in the country, and although similar areas in Sheffield have had regeneration activity in the past, this has not happened in Gleadless Valley.

Gleadless Valley is a popular estate and it has been home to some residents for many years. There are many positive features about Gleadless Valley and it is evident the community cares about what happens at Geladless Valley. In recent years we have noticed that more residents in the area are choosing not to settle Gleadless Valley as a long term home.

From listening to concerns the time had come to talk to residents to find out what they think about their neighbourhood and for us to explore whether the Council or other organisations could do things differently in Gleadless Valley to help make it a better place to live.

9. Why are we consulting?

Local people will know better than anyone else what it is like to live in Gleadless Valley.

By talking to people that live and work in Gleadless Valley we will gather the local knowledge needed to create the best master plan possible for the area. The consultation process will also provide the chance for local people to have a say on any changes that might be proposed.

10. Where to send the surveys to? When do surveys need to be returned by?

We will consult again on what we have found in order to draw up the final masterplan for the area.

There are no plans for demolition in Gleadless Valley.

This is a possible option to consider depending on the feedback and investigations into what the area needs.

The final masterplan will help us bid to Government for money to deliver the plan and achieve the vision for the estate.

However there may also be solutions that do not require big investments, such as changes to council policies and how services are delivered, which we can make a difference more quickly.
