The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence to spend a semester “studying. “It was there where he was introduced to winemaking. Several years of university led to graduation and a job at Robert Mondavi as a harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard it would have to be for himself, in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars; “Orin,” his father’s middle name and “Swift,” his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of Zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade crafting his unique wines and grew the brand-following into the “cult” that it is today.
ORIN SWIFT MACHETE PETITE SIRAH 2016 $120 Pure inky garnet in the glass, the aromatics of plum compote, wild blackberries, crushed gravel, peanut brittle and Tahitian vanilla emanate. Massive on the entry, the mid-palate is diverse with flavors of dark plums, black pepper, Amarena cherries, slow-roasted Moroccan lamb and a marbled leather texture. Rich, enveloping and vivacious, the wine finishes with perpetuating energy and length with satisfying tannins. ORIN SWIFT PAPILLON 2016 BORDEAUX BLEND $99 An inky, dark garnet sits in the glass with bursting aromatics even from afar-ripe blackcurrant and blackberry with hints of Kirsch, Madagascar vanilla and cigar box. Velvety and rich on entry and through the mid, the wine offers flavors of dark plum, blueberry and notes of fennel, fresh leather and a subtle minerality. Plush, layered and dense, the wine finishes with dusty tannins and a lingering touch of black cherry. ORIN SWIFT 8 YEARS IN THE DESERT ZINFANDEL BLEND 2017 $99 Heady aromas of brambly raspberry, black fig and peppercorn dominate; time in glass exposes more-dark chocolate, fennel and High Sierra forest floor. The palate is lush and opulent with blackberries, dark plums and currants. More flavors add to the quality of the blend-a visceral minerality and fresh Herbs de Provence. Fully integrated with puckering tannins, the wine bows out with finesse. ORIN SWIFT PALERMO CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017 $99 Classic Napa Cabernet aromas exude from the glass-cassis, black cherries, chaparral and a touch of intriguing butterscotch. Tastefully expressive on the palate with ripe raspberry, creme caramel, bay leaf and red and black currant. Carrying its own weight through the finish, the wine’s prominent tannins will soften over time. ORIN SWIFT SLANDER PINOT NOIR 2017 $99 Presents with complex aromatics of ripe cherries and dried rose petals, a touch of white pepper and a hint of alpine forest. Balanced and integrated, the palate comprises of sweet strawberries, cranberries, and traces of rhubarb. The wine closes at length with a finish of toasted brioche, a dash of caramel and fresh raspberries. ORIN SWIFT ABSTRACT GRENACHE, SYRAH, PETITE SIRAH 2017 $75 Aromas of ripe red fruits; raspberries, bing cherries, strawberries and a touch of boysen and huckleberries open the nose. The aromas continue onto the palate with added layers of charred meat, rhubarb, thyme, surrounding a dark fruit core. Smooth, enveloping and lasting, the wine finishes with a pleasing maraschino cherry note. THE PRISONER $78 Features enticing aromas of Bing cherry, dark chocolate, clove, and roasted fig. Persistent flavors of ripe raspberry, boysenberry, pomegranate, and vanilla linger harmoniously, for a smooth and luscious finish. THE PRISONER WINE COMPANY DERANGE 2015 $150 The latest Red Blend expresses only the boldest and juiciest flavors produced from the Prisoner Wine Company’s plots. It’s a beautiful balance of fruit character, acidity, and soft tannins. On the palate there is plentiful black fruit, some baking spice, and trace amounts of toasty vanilla. Very rich with a beautiful finish.
