The season is well underway now and it looks like our registrations are up across the state. This is a good thing and shows there is much interest in our sport. Being an Olympic year always brings greater attention and McDonald’s has done a great job with some extra advertising. Feature articles in the Daily Telegraph have also assisted with lifting the awareness of Little Athletics.

Increased registration numbers brings with it extra challenges and hopefully most centres are keeping their members informed about what is happening and adjusting programs to ensure competition programs can run efficiently.

One of the benefits of Little Athletics is that athletes and parents can choose their level of commitment to the sport. If they are just out to have fun and a little exercise this is possible and most of these athletes choose to only compete at their centre. Keener and more dedicated athletes can choose to compete at other centres gala days and Little Athletics NSW carnivals.

The great thing about gala days and Little Athletics NSW carnivals is that are communal and create camaraderie between athletes. Centres enjoy friendly rivalry, and support not only their athletes, but also all athletes who are competing. Do remember to support and congratulate all athletes not just your own. Carnivals and gala days are also a great way to meet new friends who you can catch up with each time you see them. Wherever possible, also thank officials for their time. Without these officials, carnivals cannot be run.

Finally, please enjoy your Little A’s experience, don’t be afraid to ask questions and please give feedback as to what Little Athletics NSW and centres do well and not so well.

3 The ROC (The Rules of Competition)

Did you know.....

STANDARD RULES The following are some of the rule changes for this season as a result of the adoption of Little Athletics Australia Standard Rules:

1. Three point start The three point start will no longer be an acceptable start method.

2. Running out of lane If an athlete runs on the inside lane line (of their lane) on a bend the material advantage test will only apply to under 11’s and below.

3. Progression to final eight in field events A count back will now be done at the end of the third round to determine which athletes are given an additional three trials.

4. Signals by javelin officials Officials in the landing area will use hand signals to indicate fouls instead of flags. Only the chief judge will have red and white flags.

Out of sector - the sector judge will point past the sector lines Not point first - the judge will wave their hand from side to side

What is the ROC? The ROC is the LANSW Inc Rules of Competition. It contains the requirements for competition for LANSW Carnivals. Whilst the basic rules for athletic competition are contained in the IAAF Competition Rules we have modified those rules to suit children. These modified rules are contained in the ROC.

Where can I find the ROC? All centres should have a copy of the ROC. The ROC can also be found in the Competitions section of the LANSW website.

86 DO IT! The Introduction to Coaching Course

Lynda Calder, Ryde Little Athletics’ Chief, recently attended the NSW Little Athletics Introduction to Coaching Course. Lynda was so impressed by the course, that she wanted to share her experience and encourage other parents to attend.

On Sunday, 7 October, I attended the Little Athletic’s Introduction to Coaching Course at Northern Suburbs Little Athletics Centre in Chatswood. I used to be an athlete when I was a child, teen and young adult and I wondered if this course could teach me anything. But it did and it was the best day. Not only that, BUT I think every parent of a Little Athlete should do this course, even if they never intend on coaching. The day was very much an introduction and aimed at coaching little children; ostensibly to introduce young athletes to all the events they will ever do.

There was no boring sitting around and listening to lectures all day, it was practical and fun. Everyone there could get as involved as they liked. For me, it was great to get in and do all the events (just like I had so many years ago when I was an athlete).

We played games to warm up, then went through some simple stretching exercises. The instructors then took us through sprints and starts (standing, crouched and on blocks), relays, walking and hurdles (and yes, I STILL have it over those hurdles). Then we moved over to field events: , discus, javelin, high jump (just the scissors jump – no flopping), long jump and triple jump. Some of the participants were Regional Champions, others were just parents looking to improve their knowledge. We all coached each other; analysing each other’s strengths and weaknesses as we tested our new “coaching” skills. Campbelltown

At the end of the day, every participant ended up with a Introduction To thick, colour book filled with coaching tips and drills and an Introduction to Coaching qualification. It was a real taster. Coaching For those who want to know more, there are Level 1 and 2 coaching courses which cover more sophisticated drills and Course event methods (e.g. the slide in shot put, the spin in discus, run ups in javelin and the flop in high jump). Sunday, 16 December 2012

Like I said, though, even if you never intend to coach, this Campbelltown Sports Stadium, course gives you the basics of what your kids will need to LUMEAH know when they compete at Little A’s. It will equip you to Register online or via an be a supportive and knowledgeable parent and may even application form. give you the confidence to take on an age management or official’s role. Registrations close on Wednesday, 12 December 2012. So, next time you hear there is an ITC course on, GO! You won’t regret it and you WILL learn something.

Lynda Calder 8 DEVELOPMENT DIARY

Exploding Out of the Blocks The new Little Athletics season has “exploded out of the blocks”. Our success in London including ex-little Athletes Sally Pearson (gold women’s 100m hurdles), Mitchell Watt (silver men’s long jump) and Dani Samuels (women’s discus top 8) together with walking sensation Jarred Talent (men’s 50km walk), was a great springboard into the 2012/13 Little Athletics season. The development team had a HUGE few months of Little Athletics promotion, whilst riding the wave of excitement of the 2012 London Olympics. From travelling around NSW visiting schools to conducting a variety of coaching clinics, the team took advantage of the hype, and “spread the word” of what Little Athletics has to offer. 2012 School Visits What a “massive” period this was!

From late July to late September, the development team travelled over 15,000km state-wide (equivalent to driving from Sydney to Perth four times), representing 69 Little Athletics centres, visiting 221 schools and seeing nearly 45,000 school students... all within two months. These visits included a mixture of presentations and coaching. This was a great time of year to visit the schools with the Olympic Games in full swing. Everyone was “sport crazy” and keen to hear about world records and coaching tips, and also about Sally Pearson and Mitchell Watt, (and especially Usain Bolt) and “their” sport. Their faces were in awe when they were shown how high, how long and how fast the elite athletes actually can go.

Melinda Gainsford-Taylor (ex-Little Athlete and Australian track legend) and Jake Stein (ex- Little Athlete and world youth record holder), both great supporters of Little Athletics, once again involved themselves in the program and visited a variety of schools. Both athletes spoke of their experiences of being a Little Athlete, showed their representative “souvenirs” (medals, uniforms etc) and told stories of their later successes and experiences. Their talks were inspiring and entertaining, with many children fascinated with what they have done or are aiming to do.

There were many positive responses from centres, with the majority of the centres involved with school visits showing an increase in registration numbers. When centres asked the new registrations how they found out about Little Athletics, there were many replies of “…there was a funny guy who visited our school and told us all about it…”

Thank you to all centres and centre organisers/representatives who were involved with the program, and also the schools involved. Special thank you to Melinda and Jake for the ongoing involvement and support in sharing their stories with the students. Coaching Clinics The 2012 October School Holidays was extremely busy with 14 single day coaching clinics being held across NSW. The clinics were hosted by various centres and included coaching tours of the Mid South Coast/South Coast Highlands, Mid North Coast and Hunter/Port Hunter regions. Each clinic was unique with their own challenges such as heat, wind, the possibility of storms, but there were also picture perfect days. These clinic were open to registered and non-registered athletes, giving “new” kids the opportunity to “have a go” at Little Athletics. All clinics had great attendances with Parramatta and Campbelltown attracting a whopping 80 participants. A total of 507 athletes attended a coaching clinic, coming away with a better knowledge of the sport with new skills, new ideas, new friends and a smile on their face.

Thanks to all host centres, supporters and helpers at each of the clinics. Thank you to all the coaches for their ongoing support and willingness to develop our Little Athletes. 9 Tamworth Clinic Another clinic during October was the North West Athletics Super Clinic, Tamworth. This clinic is a joint venture between LANSW and NSW Office of Communities Sport & Recreation and is in its 9th consecutive year. This two day clinic was held on 21-22 October 2012 and was hosted successfully for the first time by Tamworth Little Athletics centre.

The clinic saw 40 athletes participate in seven specialised coaching sessions in the hot Tamworth weather. A stark contrast to previous years as the clinic was originally held in July and the days were FREEZING and sometimes very wet. Athletes travelled from as far as Warren & Tenterfield to attend the clinic, but there was also a large representation of locals.

Across the weekend, the athletes battled through the heat on day one and a relieving cool, cloudy day on day two. When asked what they thought of the clinic, many athletes responded with “learnt heaps” and “had heaps of fun” whilst parents said “wish you could come more often”. This was a very pleasing response with many kids staying back after the coaching sessions to practice what they had learned.

Thank you to Richard Webb from Sport and Recreation, and Tamworth Little Athletics centre for all their hard work and support. Special thank you to the coaches; Kerry Smith, Maryanne Perkins and Joe Ebejer for their ongoing support. It is envisaged that the clinic will be conducted at approximately the same time next year.

Coinciding with the Tamworth clinic, Mandy Robertson from the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association conducted a coach education course. The course was comprised of a combination of level 1, 2 & 3 accreditations. Approximately ten individuals participated in the course and they were thrown in the deep end. They were given the unique opportunity to observe first hand and assist with the clinic coaching sessions. They also had the opportunity to conduct activities with the group. The aspiring coaches were also able to be mentored by the coaches at the clinic and pick up some new ideas. Well done Mandy and good luck to these coaches. Orange Clinic On Saturday, 27 October and Sunday, 28 October, Little Athletics NSW conducted a Multi-Event Coaching Clinic in Orange. The clinic attracted 36 athletes from in and around Orange. The coaching clinic was open to athletes of all abilities up to the Under 17 age group. The three Little Athletics NSW coaches in attendance conducted coaching in sprinting, hurdles, long jump, high jump, middle distance running, shot put and discus.

Little Athletics NSW Coaching & Development Officer Darren Wensor, who formed part of the coaching team, hopes that the clinic will help the athletes to enjoy a successful Little Athletics season and help them prepare for the State Multi-Event to be held in Orange in March 2013. “Not only did we coach the athletes in the events, we also used the opportunity to pass on some tips about how to compete at your best at a multi-event.”

From the feedback received so far, athletes and parents alike came away from the clinic having developed new skills and gained some great tips.

10 Watch this space! Little Athletics NSW is planning to roll out two new clinics: Running Jumping & Throwing into Little Athletics These will be half day clinics for the U7 and U8 age groups. These clinics will be a fun games based approach to learning. These clinics are not designed as event specific coaching. However, the aim is to enhance and develop the gross motor fundamental skills of running, jumping and throwing needed for Little Athletics. Little Athletics NSW Event Specific Clinics These clinics will be targeted at the U12-U17 age groups. Each clinic will focus on a specific aspect of the event to further develop the athlete. These clinics will be specifically designed for the older age groups.

We are aiming to trial these two clinics in January 2013.

Other proposed clinics offered by Little Athletics NSW in 2013 include: • The ever popular full day “school holiday coaching clinics” but these will be renamed “Little Athletics NSW Skills Clinics”. They will be full day coaching clinics featuring six coaching sessions (hurdles, sprints, shot put, discus, long jump & high jump). These clinics are open to registered and non-registered athletes in the U9-U17 age groups and focus on the basic skills of each event. As in previous years, these clinics will be generally conducted during the school holidays. • SOPAC Super Clinic: A two day coaching clinic held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre featuring four specific event coaching sessions; small coaching groups to ensure personal attention; education workshops; and a swim recovery at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. This clinic is open to U12-U17 age group and will be held in January. • Multi-Event Super Clinic: A two day coaching clinic reflecting all events (including high jump) contested at the Little Athletics Multi-Event Championship (except javelin). Participants will rotate between all events. This clinic is open to athletes in the U9-U17 age groups. • JETS Clinics • JETS Performance Camp

Keep an eye out on our website and stay tuned for more information on our camps and clinics!

Don’t Forget about the Little Athletics Christmas Camp Yes…. it’s on again…LANSW’s most popular and longest running camp, the annual “Christmas Camp” is soon happening. The camp will be held from the 21 - 23 December 2012 at Blue Gum Lodge, Springwood. This is a weekend camp beginning 7pm Friday and finishing Sunday afternoon (enough time for Santa’s little helpers to get busy!).

The cost of the camp is $175 and the closing date for camp registration is Sunday, 9 December 2012. If you would like more information or want to register, please visit our website or call the Little Athletics office. Numbers are limited.

Freaky Fact The men’s 100m world record in 1912 was 10.6sec by Donald Lippincott (US). The current Little Athletics NSW U15 boys 100m record is 10.6sec by Nicholas Hough (Hills District) in 2009.

11 JETS TAKES OFF! The 2012-2013 JETS program officially began in October with the first JETS coaching clinic for the new season at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, the issuing of a new monthly JETS newsletter, and the launching of the brand new JETS members-only section of the Little Athletics NSW website.

Flying Start for JETS More than 70 JETS members took part in the first JETS coaching session of the new season on Sunday, 21 October at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre.

The session began with a fantastic Q & A session with Pirtek Athletic Allstars Jake Stein, Amy Pejkovic and Elliott Lang.

The JETS members then took part in a warm up led by Jake, Amy and Elliott, followed by two 75 minute coaching sessions conducted by the 11 JETS coaches in attendance.

It was commonly agreed that the clinic was a huge success, the high quality of the coaching being commented on by many of the participants and parents.

The second JETS clinic was held at Sylvania Athletics Track on Sunday, 11 November.

JETS to Land at Parramatta A further JETS coaching clinic is planned for Barton Park, Parramatta on Sunday, 2 December. Other clinic dates and locations are currently being organised.

Website – JETS members-only! The brand new JETS members-only section of the website became available during October. New items will regularly be posted. The items available there already include a goal overview planning sheet, ideas for performance testing and some “golden tips” from the JETS coaches. All JETS members receive a special link to access this information when their membership is confirmed.

Super Discount for JETS members JETS members will receive a discount to attend the 2013 Little Athletics NSW Super Coaching Clinic at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, if the application is received by Tuesday, 1 January 2012.

2013 JETS Performance Camp The 2013 JETS Performance Camp will be held Friday, 12 July (2.00pm) to Sunday, 14 July (2.30pm) at the Sydney Academy of Sport & Recreation, Narrabeen. The first-ever JETS camp held during July 2012 was a huge success and the 2013 camp looks like being even bigger and better.

Applications for the camp are not yet open, but JETS members will receive notification as soon as they become available.
