DERECK FINEBERG Firstly, on a sad note I wish to convey my personal condolences to our CEO Kerry O’Keefe and her family at the loss of her father Jim Many Zone Championships will be conducted Arkins on 17 October. Jim was a life member of during the November-December period so I hope LANSW, a Little Athletics Australia Roll of they are successful for all concerned. This season Excellence inductee and was a widely liked and sees the introduction of the eight region structure respected man in and out of Little Athletics. He and an expansion of the new qualifying process will be greatly missed. from zone level. Good luck to every athlete and I hope these changes bring improved equity to On a happier note it is very encouraging to see a qualifying. significant increase in registrations for this season. No doubt publicity on the back of the This will be the final E-News prior to Christmas so recent Olympics is a factor, however, regardless on behalf of LANSW I would like to wish of the reasons it is terrific to see and is also just everyone in our Little Athletics family a happy and reward for a lot of hard work by centre personnel. safe Christmas and New Year. Our challenge now is to ensure all these athletes and families enjoy the experience and to retain the vast majority of them for coming seasons. Cheers, Dereck Fineberg (OAM) I hope all who attended the recent Trans Tasman PRESIDENT Trials enjoyed taking part and good luck to those who were successful in making the team for the Trans Tasman Challenge in January. 2 editorial The season is well underway now and it looks like our registrations are up across the state. This is a good thing and shows there is much interest in our sport. Being an Olympic year always brings greater attention and McDonald’s has done a great job with some extra advertising. Feature articles in the Daily Telegraph have also assisted with lifting the awareness of Little Athletics. Increased registration numbers brings with it extra challenges and hopefully most centres are keeping their members informed about what is happening and adjusting programs to ensure competition programs can run efficiently. One of the benefits of Little Athletics is that athletes and parents can choose their level of commitment to the sport. If they are just out to have fun and a little exercise this is possible and most of these athletes choose to only compete at their centre. Keener and more dedicated athletes can choose to compete at other centres gala days and Little Athletics NSW carnivals. The great thing about gala days and Little Athletics NSW carnivals is that are communal and create camaraderie between athletes. Centres enjoy friendly rivalry, and support not only their athletes, but also all athletes who are competing. Do remember to support and congratulate all athletes not just your own. Carnivals and gala days are also a great way to meet new friends who you can catch up with each time you see them. Wherever possible, also thank officials for their time. Without these officials, carnivals cannot be run. Finally, please enjoy your Little A’s experience, don’t be afraid to ask questions and please give feedback as to what Little Athletics NSW and centres do well and not so well. Michael Gray Business Development Director 3 The ROC (The Rules of Competition) Did you know..... STANDARD RULES The following are some of the rule changes for this season as a result of the adoption of Little Athletics Australia Standard Rules: 1. Three point start The three point start will no longer be an acceptable start method. 2. Running out of lane If an athlete runs on the inside lane line (of their lane) on a bend the material advantage test will only apply to under 11’s and below. 3. Progression to final eight in field events A count back will now be done at the end of the third round to determine which athletes are given an additional three trials. 4. Signals by javelin officials Officials in the landing area will use hand signals to indicate fouls instead of flags. Only the chief judge will have red and white flags. Out of sector - the sector judge will point past the sector lines Not point first - the judge will wave their hand from side to side What is the ROC? The ROC is the LANSW Inc Rules of Competition. It contains the requirements for competition for LANSW Carnivals. Whilst the basic rules for athletic competition are contained in the IAAF Competition Rules we have modified those rules to suit children. These modified rules are contained in the ROC. Where can I find the ROC? All centres should have a copy of the ROC. The ROC can also be found in the Competitions section of the LANSW website. 4 Championship News Trans Tasman Trials The Trans Tasman Trials were conducted at Myimbarr Community Park, Flinders, on Sunday, 4 November. Athletes from 73 Little Athletics centres attended the Trials. All athletes seemed to enjoy themselves. Many thanks to the Lake Illawarra Little Athletics Centre for their preparation of the ground and assistance on the day. The Trans Tasman Trials results and Team to compete in Sydney on 13 January has been posted on the website. State Relay Championships The State Relays, to be held on the weekend of 24 and 25 November at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre, should be a great weekend of athletics. The total number of teams entered is 1330. The Junior Day (U8-U11) has 719 teams entered and the Senior Day (U12-U17) has 611 teams entered. State Multi-Event Entries for the State Multi-Event for athletes in the U7 to U17 age groups (to be held at Waratah Sports Ground, Orange, on 2 and 3 March 2013) close at the Little Athletics NSW office on Wednesday, 6 February 2013. Congratulations to the students who have earned a chance to represent your school at this event. This is a very exciting time, and you should all be proud of all of the time and hard work you put in to get to this point. Thank you to the coaches, parents and guardians who play an important role in supporting our talented young Nebraskans. Participants, make sure you also thank all of those who have supported you and helped you get to this point in your life. When students are involved in extracurricular activities they are able to build the character and discipline needed to succeed long after graduation. These outside of the classroom competitions encourage the development of important values such as sportsmanship, hard work, and responsibility. As you partake in these activities in the upcoming days, remember that it’s not just about winning and that you will take away experience, friends and memories that will last long after your time in high school. Best wishes for a safe and exciting competition! Pete Ricketts Governor Competing for a state championship is the goal of most students who participate in sports and performing arts. So to those high school students who have reached this championship, we say congratulations and good luck! Students participate in high school sports and performing arts for a wide variety of reason, not the least of which is to have fun.

SSSummerSummer 2020201120 111111----2012012012012222 Club Premiership The Athletics NSW Club Premiership was held over 9 rounds at various venues from 22 October to 19 January as well as the NSW Relay Championships on 19-20 November. This season the Club Premiership was won by U.T.S. Northern Suburbs while Asics Wests finished back in equal 5 th place (out of 41 competing clubs). For our Club the premiership got off to a disappointing start when at the split venues on 22 October we only had five athletes compete at Campbelltown and five at Narrabeen to be placed 15 th after Round 1. In later weeks when more of our athletes turned up the Club placed as high as second or third for those particular rounds, to improve our overall position from our lowly start. In the age point scores Asics Wests were placed 4 th in the Juniors, 5 th in the Open and 7 th in the Masters. Club members competing most often over the 9 rounds of the Club Premiership were: Paul De la Motte (9 rounds), Robert Jessep (8), Michael Doggett (7), David Lewis (7), John Crandell (7), Robert Mason (6), Tavleen Singh (6), Lauren Clark (5), Jeff Pillon (5), Tom McCoy (5), Monique Byers (5), Charles Hunter (5), Kiara Fioravanti (5), Jake Stein (4), Emily Crutcher (4), Rhys Stein (4), Hayden Perry (4).
