  • The Branch That Snapped Off the Le Mesurier Tree
THE BRANCH THAT SNAPPED OFF THE LE MESURIER TREE THE MYSTERY OF JOB INTRODUCTION The study of one‟s family tree sometimes leads one into ways and byways that one would have preferred, initially at least, not to enter. Such was the case when, sometime after the death of my father whose own memories might have provided me with some shortcuts, I decided to investigate his mother‟s Le Mesurier family. This, after all, was my only Guernsey link. We had visits from Le Mesurier relatives in Australia and it was to them that I turned. From them I got some idea of my grandmother‟s family and the fact that there were still some members left in Guernsey but none bearing the name Le Mesurier. I was then able to contact Mrs. Burt (Madeline), then some 90 years of age and a first cousin of my father, who was able to fill in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge of my Guernsey grandmother‟s family. In addition, I joined the Family History Section of the Societe Guernesiaise and went to evening classes on the subject of genealogy given by Michael de Carteret. With Guernsey records conveniently housed in the Greffe and the Priaulx library the prospects for a fruitful and problem-free outcome looked good. Armed with my father‟s birth certificate, his parents‟ marriage certificate with the spelling “Le Messurier” altered to “Le Mesurier” and initialled and the smattering of knowledge already gained, I entered upon my researches. FIRST CONTACTS. Madeline told me that when they were children and on special occasions only, the original of a Letter of Patent granted to their great grandfather, Thomas Henry Le Mesurier, for his invention of a pump useful in ships, was brought out for them to marvel at in wide-eyed wonder.

LONG ISLAND Colonid PATENTS BY FREDERICK VAN WYCK BOSTON A. A. BEAUCHAMP I935 PREFACE LL the publications cited by the author in this A tract have been consulted in the Boston Public Library, the Harvard Law Library, and the library of the New England Historic Genealogical So- ciety, some in one of them and some in the others, and for the unfailing courtesy shown to him by all three of these libraries and for the favors and privi- leges freely extended to him by all of them while he was making these researches he expresses here his appreciation and gratitude. The first patent by the King to the Duke and the Duke's commission to Governor Nicolls have been reproduced from photostatic copies of these instru- ments as published by Brodhead. The comparing of the other quoted matter in Part I with the sources has been done without assistance, and while care has been exercised it is hoped that those interested in the subject will consult these sources direct. As is in effect said in the tract, it is mainly a collection of authorities thought to have a bearing on a certain legal question, but arguments have been avoided and no assertive position on the question is taken. -..+. $ On the subject of Seventeenth Century chirography, reference is here made to Oyster Bay Town Records, Volume I-1653-1690 . • Jersey Post Office Issued Five Stamps on 21 March to Mark the International Camellia Society's Congress from 30 March to 4 April
The Jersey Post Office issued five stamps on 21 March to mark the International Camellia Society's Congress from 30 March to 4 April. The stamps are a good example of the diversity of the camellia world 'Captain Rawes', on the 18p stamp, arrived in England from China in 1820, the first C. reticulata to reach the West. 'Brigadoon', on the 23p stamp, a C. x williamsii, is a cross be tween C. saluenensis and C. japonica 'Princess Baciocchi', a semi-double from Armstrong Nurseries in the USA in 1960. 'Elsie Jury', on the 30p stamp, a .C. saluenensis x C. japonica 'Pukekura' hybrid ofpeonyform, was produced by Les Jury in New Zealand in 1964. 'Augusto Leal de Gouveia Pinto', on the 35p stamp, is a C. japonica formal double from Portugal, first seen about 1904. 'Bella Romana', on the 41 pstamp, is a rose form double from a C. japonica cultivar raised from seed by Del Grande, a nursery owner in Florence, Italy, in 1856. It was dedicated to Rome on the occasion ofthe Italian unification. The idea for the camellia stamp issue was broached to the ICS Directors by Mrs. Mayda Reynolds in 1986. It was put to the Jer sey Post Office two years later. The camellias are from the Jersey gardens of Mrs. Mayda Reynolds and Mrs. Vi Lort-Phillips and were photographed by Stuart Abraham, a commercial photographer, Final work on the layout was begun in 1992 by Mrs. Andree Valentine, now Philatelic Manager of the Jersey Post Office. All ICS members attending the Jersey Congress received Pres entation Packs; Mint sets and Presentation Packs are still avail able from the Jersey Post Office (see advertisement on opposite page).
