There are different versions of the tradition of origin of the Remo people, most of those stories are linked to Ijebu-Ode and Ile-Ife. Since 1959, Ilisan Remo has witnessed a gradual migration Igbo and Ibibio people who migrated and eventually settled in Ilisan Remo. Among these settlers, the Igbo are more in number and have lived cordially with their Youruba host. The Igbo have contributed to the economic development of Ilisan. Conflicts are amicably resolved and no record of any major confrontation between the settlers and their host. Culture is not left out in their interaction as inter-marriages have occurred between the two groups. This paper examines issues on Igbo migration to Ilisan Remo, Ogun State since 1959, the causes of this migration and their contribution to the development of the community. In order to have a clearer understanding of the subject matter, the paper has been segmented into sub-headings, clearly stating the content analysis of the study. The objective of this paper is to carefully examine Igbo migration to Ilisan Remo and the reasons for this migration.

In Ogun State, the UBE Act was passed into law in 2005 after that of the Federal government in 2004, hence, the demonstration of the intention to make the UBE free, compulsory and universal. The aspects of the policy which is capital intensive require the government to provide adequately for basic education in the area of organization, funding, staff development, facilities, among others. With the commencement of the scheme in 1999/2000 until-date, Ogun State, especially in the area of facility provision, has joined in the collaborative effort with the Federal government through counter-part funding to provide some facilities to schools in the State, especially at the Primary level. These facilities include textbooks (in core subjects’ areas- Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Primary Science), blocks of classrooms, furniture, laboratories/library, teachers, etc. This study attempts to assess the level of articulation by the Ogun State Government of its UBE policy within the general framework of the scheme in providing facilities to schools at the primary level.

[email protected] 2Land and Water Resources Management Programme, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Obafemi Awolowo University, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, Nigeria [email protected] ABSTRACT Environmental pollution caused by the activities of Ewekoro Cement production facility of the West African Portland Cement (WAPC, Plc), Ogun State, Nigeria was studied at some terrestrial and aquatic receptor locations within the catchments area of the production plant which has been in operation for over 40years. Air, water and soil samples of the adjoining villages (Ajobiewe, Olapeleke, Alaguntan and Wasinmi) were analyzed. High particulate matter deposi- tions were recorded for all the sampling locations. Dusts emitted from the cement factory were rich in heavy metals. Heavy metals concentration at Ajobiewe, Olapeleke and Alaguntan were significantly (p<0.05) higher compared with those obtained at Wasimi – the farthest location from the pollution source, which served as control for particulate and soil sampling. The distri- bution of heavy metals in the soil sampled followed in decreasing order of Mn>Ni>Fe>Cr>Zn>Cu>Co>Pb>Cd. Heavy metals concentrations were significantly different (p<0.05) at the closest locations around the plant compared to Wasinmi (the control). Basic cations and anions in the water samples from the 3 rivers draining the area were within interna- tionally recommended values for irrigation except the electrical conductivity (EC) and nitrate - (NO 3 ) in Alaguntan River which were found to be above the maximum permissible limits by 5.41% and 64.30% respectively.

A two-stage simple random sampling technique was employed, and with the help of 120 well- structured questionnaires, data were collected from 120 rural households. The collected data were then subjected to both descriptive and econometrics statistics (regression analysis, Marginal Propensity To Consume (MPC), price elasticity of beef). The results indicated that the highest age of the consumers was within the age bracket of 30-39 years. 65% of the population was married. Secondary education takes the dominance with 49.2% having it. Their major occupation was petty trading (45%). The results showed that beef price and monthly expenditure on food items negatively affected beef consumption in the area, while beef preference, fish price, beef availability, total monthly income and major occupation positively affected beef consumption. Price elasticity of beef was found out to be -0.90006. The Marginal Propensity Consume of beef was 0.0017484. The identified major constraint to beef consumption in the area was low availability of beef. It is therefore recommended that large scale beef cattle rearing should be encouraged which will help to increase the production of safe beef for consumption.

    Ijebu-Ode Ile-Ife Truck Road South- West Nigeria. Client: Federal Ministry of Works Lagos- Nigeria. Location: Osun- Ogun State - Nigeria. Date: 1977 The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Works commissioned Allott (Nigeria) Limited to undertake the location, survey and detailed design of a new trunk road to link the towns of Ijebu Ode Ile-Ife and Sekona which lie to the north of Lagos and south east of Ibadan. The route over which this road was to pass was through thick tropical rain forest and sparsely populated. Access was difficult and the existing dirt roads were impassable in the rainy season. A suitable was located from a study of aerial photography and a ground reconnaissance which was followed by a traverse survey. The detailed design of the road’s alignment was carried out using the latest computer-aided techniques, further to the results of the topographical survey. Other field work Included a hydrological survey and a borehole survey. On completion of the design, the centre line of the new road was staked out by the field team. The proposed road had a two lane carriageway with bituminous surfacing, a crushed stone base and a laterite sub- base. The total length was 140km and there were a total of 13 bridges. The two major structures were the 150m long 6-span bridge over the River Oshun and the 75m long 3-span bridge over the River Shasha. These have in-situ reinforced concrete voided decks supported on reinforced concrete piers. The location of sources of suitable road Construction materials was an important part of the design.

However, there is a tendency for its quality to deviate from recommended standards as most groundwater sources are close to regions prone to erosion and most well are not usually covered. The tragedy is that the adverse effect might creep into the ecosystem and affects humanity if a regular check on the quality is not been made. The Geographical location and altitude of each well location were taken using Global Positioning System (GPS). The moderate PH range (6.30-7.36) can be linked to low values of TDS (352 mg/L) and EC (695 ms/cm) which are within the standard recommended for drinking- indicate a low concentration of salt contents. The relationship between the parameters shows a direct trend with the hydraulic head. Hence, groundwater sources (wells) in Abeokuta North Local Government are good for drinking.
