ABSTRACT : The parameters of length-weight relationship Labeo fimbriatus were estimated from Vani Vilasa Sagara Reservoir, district, Karnataka. The regression co-efficient of male was found to be lower than female. From this observation it may be opined that female gained more weight in length compared to male. Even though ‘b’ values are around ‘3’, it was found that there was significant difference between sex. Hence, separate equations for both the sex were derived. During 2013-14 the equations were for male 0.0182 L2.9427 and for females 0.0158 L2.9808 likewise, during 2014-15, the equations were W = 0.0197L2.8782 and 0.0161L2.9857 for male and female, respectively. Data on seasonal variation in condition factor (Kn) of both male and female during both the years of the study showed that the values were more or less similar in both the sex, indicating almost identical metabolic activity in male and female which may be attributed to gonadal development and high feeding intensity. The Kn values were observed in the range of 0.9902 to 1.0653 for males and 0.9996 to 1.0686 for female in different seasons. These parameters are useful to evaluate the wellbeing population, their biology for scientific management of fisheries and stock assessment. Key words : Labeo fimbriatus, length-weight relationship, growth and Vani Vilasa Sagara Reservoir.

INTRODUCTION are the important biological parameters which indicate Computing mathematical relationship between length the suitability of a specific water body for growth of fish and weight of fish is an important aspect of applied fishery (Le Cren, 1951). The values of these factors depend on biology. Length-weight relationships provide basic physiological features of fish namely maturity, spawning, information in fisheries biology and therefore, useful to environmental factors and food availability in a water body. determine the weight of an individual fish of known length The present investigation has been undertaken to or total weight from length-frequency distribution (Forese, assess the length - weight relationship in both male and 1998 and Koutrakis et al, 2003). Length and weight female of Labeo fimbriatus from the Vani Vilasa Sagara measurement can give information on the stock Reservoir, , Karnataka. This study composition, life span, maturity, growth and production provides a baseline data on food fish, which maybe (Erkoyuncu, 1995; Moutopoulos and Stergiou, 2000). It important basic tool for management and conservation was observed that in natural habitat when length of fishes practices of this species. increases, weight of fish also increases in proportion there MATERIALS AND METHODS by showing the weight of fish is function of length. This Monthly samples were collected from the Vani Vilasa relationship was initially used to obtain information on Sagar Reservoir fish landing centre and fish market from the growth condition of fish and to find out whether the March, 2013 to February, 2015. A total of 2,381 individuals somatic growth was isometric or allometric (Le Cren, of Labeo fimbriatus ranging in size from 10 to 60 cm 1951 and Ricker, 1975). The relative condition factor (Kn)
