Fred Guarino Downtown Sounds Chairperson

Greetings,

Welcome to the 2018, Downtown Sounds Concert Series!

The Glen Cove Downtown Sounds Series has grown to a point where it has achieved a well respected, and enviable position in the enter- tainment field on Long Island. The series attracts many talented groups who express their desire to perform at our venue each year. So it now has become “The place to be!”

It’s due to the dedicated work of our talented committee members, and the City of Glen Cove. And of coarse, a huge thank you to all of our loyal sponsors. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Throughout the year, we have numerous meetings that focus on bringing you the very best. We strive to improve our services and are constantly looking for new ideas to make our shows a better experi- ence, and an enjoyable season for our citizens.

I would also like to thank our new Executive Director of the BID and Downtown Sounds, Patricia Holman. Patricia is doing a wonderful job and has been working hard to add new features to enhance the overall concert series experience.

We have an exciting talent line up this year.

So sit back, and enjoy the show!

Fred Guarino Chairperson of the Downtown Sounds Committee

History of Downtown Sounds As a way to bring people into the downtown, the Glen Cove Down- town B.I.D. in 1997 created its first free concert series, Jazz in The Square. It was a hit. During the following years, the concert series evolved to accommodate a variety of musical styles that broad- ened its appeal to residents and visitors alike. Today, the event— now known as Downtown Sounds — is jointly produced through a partnership between the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improve- ment District and the City of Glen Cove.

The City of Glen Cove has a long history of fine musical events, which began in 1959 with the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival. Going forward the partnership between the Downtown B.I.D. & the City of Glen Cove will be focused on fulfilling our vision of making Glen Cove the “Music Capital of the North Shore.”

Every Friday night during July & August, the downtown Village Square comes alive with music featuring New York area artists. With the sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues, rock, latin and other genres filling the air, the public enjoys great music while dancing and dining in our open and inviting downtown area. Many downtown business- es find they receive benefits beyond increased foot traffic and pub- lic awareness by becoming a sponsor of Downtown Sounds. Why not make your organization a part of this yearly fun!

Dear Glen Cove Music Lovers,

As Executive Director of Glen Cove’s Downtown Business Improvement District (BID), I am delighted to welcome you to the 2018 Downtown Sounds Concert Series. It is well established that music is a tie that binds and for the past 21 years, Downtown Sounds and its predecessor Jazz in the Square have united area residents at this very intersection on many a hot summer night. This year, the Downtown Sounds Committee has worked throughout the winter and spring to line up a diverse array of talent to entertain you these nine Friday evenings. Our goal was to provide something for everyone and we are confident that we achieved this objective.

During last year’s concert series, I was the new kid on the block having just taken over the reins from Francine Koehler, the woman at the helm when Downtown Sounds grew to what it is today. However, this does not mean I was unfamiliar with Downtown Sounds. You see, when I was running a down- town Glen Cove business, I enjoyed both the music and the increased foot traffic that the concerts would bring. Talk about a win win! Free concerts for local residents, increased activity for local businesses and the opportunity for concert goers to take advantage of everything our vibrant downtown has to offer. You can’t beat that!

In attempt to “learn the ropes” last year, I circulated through the crowds to get feedback regarding the music we featured and the efforts of the BID throughout the rest of the year. To all who provided such feedback, I thank you. But our job is far from done. Our goal is to continue to grow both the concert series and Glen Cove’s downtown and we cannot do so without your input. So, if we don’t get to you, please come to us! Visit the BID table and the tables of all of our sponsors to let us know your thoughts. And remember that those sponsors are helping to foot the bill for the talent you are enjoying so make it a point to give them your support. After all, when Glen Cove businesses prosper, Glen Cove prospers which means every Glen Cove resident benefits. And that should be music to everyone’s ears!

Sincerely,

Patricia Holman Executive Director Honorable Mentions 2018

FRED GUARINO, Chairperson of Downtown Sounds:

As the owner and engineer of Tiki Recording Studios, Fred Guarino has been supplying quality services, great equip- ment, a comfortable recording environment and talented engineers to a plethora of musical acts for the past 40 years. Beginning with an eight-track studio in the base- ment of his parents’ home, it wasn’t long before Fred opened shop with a brand new studio that has blossomed as a Glen Cove business since 1983. Indeed, throughout its existence, Tiki has remained at the cutting edge in an in- dustry where recording and technology trends are contin- ually evolving. For example, in 2004, Fred sold his studio to recording artist Alicia Keys and downsized to his current location on Glen Street. The move allowed him to incorpo- rate the most modern technology in a more intimate envi- ronment and Tiki Recording now features modern equip- ment along with traditional analog gear. The combination allows for a hybrid analog/digital recording approach that has been well received by the artists he works with. Over his 40 years, these include Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Jimmy Webb, Ashanti, Maureen McGovern, Billy J. Kramer, Odet- ta, Joan Osborne, Phoebe Snow, Peter Allen, Brian Setzer, Kenny Rogers, James Earle Jones, Woody Allen, Andy Cooney and Crystal Gayle. Throughout his career, Fred has earned numerous Grammy nominations for projects he has recorded and in addition to being the chairperson for Downtown Sounds, was National President of the Soci- ety of Professional Recording Studios. DEPUTY MAYOR MAUREEN BASDAVANOS:

Community involvement has always been a top priority for Maureen Basda- vanos. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Maureen Moran graduated from North Shore High School and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. After finishing the program, she worked for Coca Cola as an executive sec- retary and administrative assistant followed by stints as office manager, bookkeeper and assistant to the director at a variety of organizations in- cluding the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation. During this time, she married Bill Basdavanos and had children Sean and Kelly. However, from when her children were young, Maureen still found time to dedicate to community service serving as a Cub Scout and Brownie leader, Jr. Football Cheerlead- ing Coach and Booster Club Public Relations Officer. She is also a long- standing Board Member of Glen Cove C.A.R.E.S. and a member of the La- dies Ancient Order of Hibernians. But Maureen’s biggest commitment to the people of Glen Cove was made in 2008 when Mayor Ralph Suozzi asked her to serve as his Deputy Mayor, which she did until 2013. At that point, she decided to retire and spend time traveling and enjoying her family; howev- er, her plan was short lived. In 2017, duty again called when new Mayor Tim Tenke asked her to return to the Deputy Mayor role and she gladly consent- ed. “There is no other job I would have considered at this point in my life,” she says. “But with this job, I know I can make a difference and give back to my hometown. And what’s better than that?”

MARY COOPER:

Working as a mother’s helper, Mary Cooper relocated to Glen Cove from the South in 1956. It was love at first site. She came from a family of 15 chil- dren and once she moved to Glen Cove, she married and had two children of her own. Glen Cove won her over because she saw it as a family- oriented place. She now has grandchildren and great grandchildren in ad- dition to many children and adolescents in the community that benefit from her wisdom. Her community work began with the Glen Cove Housing Au- thority and spread to the Glen Cove Youth Board of which she is an original board member. Working with the Youth Board lead to her involvement with the Business Improvement District and Downtown Sounds where she has been impressed with the progress that the series has made over the years. She also volunteers her time to SAFE, which provides drug prevention ser- vices to the community. Mary derives great satisfaction from volunteering because it allows her to help people. Celebrating her 80th birthday this sum- mer, Mary’s youthful exuberance and propensity to help others is an inspira- tion to old and young alike. “I don’t like idle time,” she explains. “I like stay- ing busy and I like making people happy. So, volunteering my time to help the people of Glen Cove is perfect for me. I like to help the kids of today get the things that I wasn’t able to get when I was their age. But I also teach them to appreciate what they have. I’m down in the dump sometimes, but people don’t know it because I always stay positive.” FRED DIMENNA:

During 20 years as a competitor bodybuilder, Fred DiMenna won two ama- teur drug-free Mr. competitions including one that earned him his pro card in 1994. He went on to compete 11 times as a pro including a runner-up placement in the heavyweight class of the 1998 WNBF Pro Natural International. He retired from competition in 2003 and returned to school to pursue his Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at Adelphi University. After graduating with a 4.0, he left native Glen Cove to obtain his PhD at the Uni- versity of Exeter, the leading university for sports science in the U.K. His PhD supervisor was renowned physiologist Andy Jones and his research was in the field of oxygen uptake kinetics. After returning to the U.S., he has contin- ued to work with the group at Exeter in addition to assuming a position as a Research Associate in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease for the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan. He also works with researchers at the Pulmonary Institute at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Israel and the Faculdade de Ciências at São Paulo State University in Brazil. Through these affiliations, he has amassed 40 PubMed publications. For the past eight years, he has served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Movement Sciences at Columbia University Teachers College while in 2014, he assumed what might be his most daunt- ing challenge yet organizing the chaos at the View Grill, his wife Jeanine’s restaurant.

MICHAEL “EPPY” EPSTEIN

For 17 years, 19 Bryant Avenue in Roslyn was the site of Long Island’s equiva- lent to Manhattan’s CBGB and L.A.’s Whiskey a Go Go. However, neither of those musical palaces had Michael “Eppy” Epstein as its mastermind. Eppy was the owner of My Father's Place, which served as a cultural capital for an entire generation of Long Islanders. The day the music died at MFB was in 1987; however, when you mention the club to Eppy today, the twinkle in his eye breathes life into the lost, but not forgotten era. “The place was a bowling alley before we made it into a club,” he explains. “Richie Havens opened it on Memorial Day of 1971. Anyone who was around played there, but from the start, we were all about developing new talent.” That talent included Bruce Springsteen, The Police and a local up-and-comer who filled in when Charlie Daniels was scheduled, but had laryngitis. “He was record- ing his first solo album and we asked him to be the piano man that night,” Eppy recalls. “And that was Billy Joel's first live radio broadcast.” Given its profound influence, there is no doubt that the music world mourned the death of MFB when Tower of Power performed the club’s final concert; however, given recent events, any epitaphs appear premature. Indeed, in November of 2017, Eppy reached an agreement to bring the club back to life in the ballroom of the Roslyn Hotel and its rebirth began with a perfor- mance by Buster Poindexter on June 29. They say we can’t go home again, but it appears that Eppy just proved them wrong! CAROL HAMMOND:

While working in the legislative office of New York State Assembly Member Charles Lavine in 2005, Carol Hammond found out about the Downtown Sounds concert committee and was quick to join the ranks. As a lifelong resident of the Glen Cove area, she recognized the need to bring vitality back to the downtown of the city. As far as Carol was concerned, provid- ing free concerts at the Village Square was the perfect way to do so. What is more, she loves music so it was the perfect fit. Carol has spent most of her career working in the banking industry so her expertise regarding financial aspects of concert planning has been invaluable to the committee. Her background in banking also gives her a unique perspective to appreciate the strain on area businesses and residents who struggle in these trying economic times. Consequently, volunteering on a committee whose work provides a boost to local businesses and free entertainment for local citizens is a win-win in her book. Carol currently serves as Vice President and Client Relationship Manager at Bank United, a position she has held since 2011. She has worked for Herald National since 2008 after serving as the Chief of Staff for Lavine for four years. Carol’s work with Downtown Sounds also includes helping to figure out the best acts to bring to the Village Square stage. Being that her mother Sally Famiglietti is often in the front row enjoying the concerts, the pressure is on Carol in this regard!

FRANCINE KOEHLER:

Experiencing the growth of Downtown Sounds from its inception as Jazz in the Square in 1997, Francine Koehler saw an event she envisioned evolve into reality. In 2004, as Executive Director of the Glen Cove Business Im- provement District, Francine decided that a more eclectic blend of music would attract a larger audience. “I envisioned a musical event that would appeal to a broad base of the community,” she explains. “Over time, the City of Glen Cove became a partner. This allowed us to extend the concert schedule from July into August. And the many wonderful sponsors that sup- ported us throughout the years gave us the ability to provide great talent. Watching Downtown Sounds flourish over the past two decades has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. It’s a joy to see so many people – friends, neighbors and newcomers to Glen Cove – enjoying them- selves on the streets of downtown on Friday nights.” Consistent with her vi- sion, the change from the all-jazz format that Francine instituted broad- ened the horizons of Downtown Sounds allowing it to grow to what is has become today and she was at the helm for all of that growth. However, she retired early last year, which left the series in the hands of new Execu- tive Director Patricia Holman. “When I turned the reins over to Patricia, I was confident that Downtown Sounds would continue to flourish as part of the fabric that weaves us all together.” Given the success of last year’s series, it’s safe to say that Francine’s vision in this regard has also come to fruition.

PAT MCLAUGHLIN:

When Downtown Sounds started as Jazz in the Square, local musicians played before modest crowds at the Glen Cove Village Square. Contrast that with the modern version where world-renowned artists like John Oates, Jimmy Webb and Billy J. Kramer play on the Village Square stage and it should be apparent that the stakes have been raised when it comes to technical support. Enter Pat McLaughlin, the man who puts the sound in the downtown. A veteran in the field, Pat has operated PMB audio since 1979 providing sound and other technical services to many major artists in all mu- sical genres. In addition to the Glen Cove Village Square, locations where Pat has plied his trade include Lincoln Center and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the U.S. Open. What is more, he currently provides audio services for NBC’s The Today Show, the fifth-longest-running American television series. The show is routinely viewed by five million or more people per week. However, the notoriety Pat gains from working on such a prestig- ious television series does not come without a price. Live music performanc- es are frequently featured on the show and delivering the sound through a narrow space between tall buildings with pavement below and a crowd of audience members is a daunting challenge. Indeed, it requires the coordi- nation of many talented people just to get the music portions of the show on the air and Pat is front & center in the process working hand in hand with each band’s monitor engineer.

EVELINA RASO:

Despite the fact that she only has two children, Evelina Raso is referred to as “Mama” by many Glen Covers. Evelina was born in Falerna, a town and commune in the province of Catanzaro in the Calabria region of southern Italy. However, 40 years ago, she moved to Glen Cove & has been an influ- ential member of our community ever since. Indeed, just about every Glen Cove resident has experienced Evelina’s kindness first at Marra’s Restaurant on School Street & now at the View Grill on the Glen Cove Golf Course. “Evelina’s value at our restaurant is immeasurable,” the View’s chef & own- er Jeanine DiMenna explains. “We could never replace her!” Evelina has also spread the sweet things in life at Chocolicious Chocolatier. However, the main way that Evelina has positively influenced the people of Glen Cove is my dedicating her time and energy to community service. For the past 25 years, she has been an active member of the Nassau County Dem- ocratic party participating in committees that have been influential in fur- thering the party’s political cause. What is more, she is involved in the Columbiettes and the Rosary Society of St. Rocco’s R.C. Church. She was also an original committee member of the Glen Cove Youth Board and served in that capacity for 25 years. Of course, last but not least is Down- town Sounds where regular concert attendees know Evelina as the 50-50 raffle lady because she is always circulating through the crowd welcoming people & giving them the chance to hit it big! DANIELA SOLEIMANI

After a challenging but rewarding academic journey, Daniela Soleimani earned her Master’s degree in Business Administration from Long Island Uni- versity’s School of Business. This school has been ranked a “best business school” by Princeton Review for the past 15 years and is accredited by AACSB-International, a distinction given to only 5% of business schools in the world. During her time at LIU, Daniela was recognized as a top performer in her graduate program. What is more, her academic achievements earned her induction into the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. Founded in 1913, inclusion in this exclusive business organization is notewor- thy because only the top 20% of graduate students in AACSB-accredited institutions are deemed worthy of the distinction. After obtaining her de- gree, Daniela assumed the position of Executive Assistant for the Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District and during her tenure with the BID, she has provided valuable assistance to Executive Director Patricia Holman. She likes working for the BID because it has allowed her to put what she learned in the classroom into practice. Daniela’s work with the BID also lead to her involvement with Downtown Sounds, which included working with the committee to set up this year’s schedule of acts. “I really enjoyed the chal- lenge,” she explains. “Our goal was to ensure a diverse array of performers that will entertain the many different members of the community we serve.”

KEITH WAY

As a teenager washing dishes in a restaurant in Vermont, Keith Way’s jour- ney to the top of the hospitality industry started inauspiciously. However, a few years later, Keith attended the Culinary Institute of America, which paved the way for his future success. At CIA, Keith met Arno Schmidt, who brought him into the Big Apple chapter of the American Culinary Federa- tion. This opened up many job opportunities for Keith who began working as Assistant Steward at the Westbury Hotel. After a month, he was promoted to Chief Steward and after a few years, became Food & Beverage Director and Banquet Manager. He moved on to positions as Banquet Manager at the Park Lane Hotel and U.N. Plaza Hotel where he hosted dignitaries includ- ing former President Gerald Ford. After 20 years of working in hotels, Keith wanted to spend more time with his family so he began working for Break- fast Productions, a boutique bread & pastry company that eventually merged with Voila! Bakeries. During his time at Breakfast Productions, Keith was named Purveyor of the Year by the Food & Beverage Association of America. He also worked for three years with Bouley Bakery before retiring. Nowadays, he stays active on the local front helping Chef Jeanine DiMen- na with operations at the View Grill and, of course, also dedicates his time and energy to Downtown Sounds. Thirty-three-year residents of Glen Cove, he & wife Jennifer participate in many other local events, but also enjoy travelling the globe.

Bait & Tackle Shop 17 Bridge Street Glen Cove, NY (516) 200 9517 Gloria’s Miami Sound featuring Nikki Torres July 6th

Gloria’s Miami Sound featuring Nikki Torres brings fiery Latin American to Downtown Sounds Concert Series. Gloria’s Miami Sound presents a tribute show that pays homage to , the influ- ential Latin American group that featured as their lead singer.

Gloria’s Miami Sound features Nikki Torres playing the role that Gloria played in Miami Sound Machine. Nikki has toured the world with many major artists; however, her work with Gloria’s Miami Sound brings her closest to home because much like the group they are paying tribute to, husband Bill Ciaramelli is a member of the band. Indeed, while Nikki assumes the front-and-center position with her singing and dancing, Bill takes up the rear behind the drum kit. How- ever, she does send the spotlight his way for some incredible drum solos during the show. Bill is also musical director for the group.

No less than 14 artists take their place on stage beside Nikki and Bill during Gloria’s Miami Sound’s high-energy performances & these include vocalists and dancers replete with authentic costuming. With the music of Miami Sound Machine featured, the performance is sure to satisfy anyone who wants to “get on their feet” and “feel the rhythm of the music getting stronger.” However, the group also bridges the Latin American gap by performing hits by Ricky Martin, Selena, Celia Cruz & Carlos Santana so there is sure to be something for everyone.

Kramer (one of Brian Epstein's original British Invasion stars); Tony Sheridan, who recorded an entire album with The Beatles, themselves; and Pete Best, who (in case you've been living under a rock for all these years) was, early in their careers, the drummer of The Beatles! They have most recently performed an ex- clusive engagement for "EMI" at "Ruby Foo's" in NYC, not to mention their 2005, one-time-only 40th anniversary recreation of The Beatles' historic 1965 concert at Shea Stadium… Shea Stadium! Offstage, Richie is an established writer and director, currently working as the musical director for the Bernie Williams Band. He also wrote the theme music for the Barcelona Olympics. He is the musical director of the Monday Night Jam Band, New York’s best open mic jam for over twenty years. This vision continues today with an impressive collection of Santana's songs in the band's repertoire. The band began playing a few small clubs and performing at area colleges while constantly developing their sound as well as adding & replacing members. By 2013, the lineup had changed, except for two original members, to reflect the current membership and ever expanding venue roster and gig schedule. Our current schedule features some of the areas top venues. Milagro has been featured on the in- ternet show, The Maverik Soul Hour, positively reviewed in LIVE Magazine, and performed with Santana’s original vocalist Marvin Moore-Hough. Urban Artist Design Downtown Banners

The Glen Cove Downtown Business Improvement District and Downtown Sounds are thrilled to work in collaboration with First City Project on a series of banners throughout the downtown that feature urban themed artists. This collaboration is part of an initiative to create a vibrant, exciting arts-filled downtown environment.

The artists featured in this program represent the creators of the new banners designed expressly for Downtown Sounds 2018.

First City Project has a goal to introduce the residents of the City of Glen Cove and surrounding communities to the next generation of urban themed artists through the transformation of a 9000 square foot historic structure. The Coles House as a designated city landmark structure has architecture details dating back to 1810 with additional portions that could be traced back as far as 1690. It was the home to one of the origi- nal five founding families of the City of Glen Cove. This building has long been neglected and essentially abandoned for years until local businessman Joe LaPadula had a vision to infuse new life into the structure through an ambitious art program.

The essence of FCP is to use Coles House as a platform to intro- duce the community of Glen Cove to a new genre of art and showcase the rising local area talents with numerous NY area street art professionals. FCP aims to start a dialogue with the community where a balance can be achieved through a new art medium and a new spirit of creativity that can rise along- side the traditional values within the first city on Long Island. The Downtown B.I.D. & Downtown Sounds are excited to be a part of this dialogue.
