    APRIL 2011 ISSUE QUE PASA IN LA By Rudy Mangual Victor Manuelle Once again, the summer season approaches the City of Angels and preparations are underway for the upcoming annual festivals and concert series that are an escape for Angelenos. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced its 2011 Concert Season at the landmark Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The season’s opener on June 17, 2011 features the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by Thomas Wilkins and honoring Harry Connick, Jr., among other legendary Hall of Fame inductees. Music Director Gustavo Dudamel conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 14 weeks of subscription concerts that include two LA Phil commissions, both of which are world premieres, plus a Green Umbrella series concert with an LA Phil commission and world premiere. The 2011/12 season finds Dudamel at the helm of numerous large-scale projects. The Summer Concert Season runs from June 17, 2011 through September 24, 2011.   • Two Important Documentaries You Need to See, If You Care About the Future of Salsa
    Two important documentaries you need to see, if you care about the future of Salsa Most of you know that I’m very passionate about Salsa and keeping it alive. I’m constantly seeking to educate myself about the history, legends, masters and its current state, to the best of my ability, within the time constraints that my busy life afford me, at this point in time. As I didn’t have any gigs last weekend, I took advantage of a very cool free two evening program called CineMusicaCity, a South Bronx, Culture Trail Festival, put together by a few organizations: Casita Maria, Dancing In The Streets, City Lore, LISC, NYCHA, Banana Kelly and Bronxworks. Thank you to all of the above. I’ll be sharing my views about 2 important documentaries that were included and featured in the program’s schedule. They both feature amazing historical footage of the evolution of Salsa, mostly in New York and Puerto Rico, and a bit about Africa and Cuba too. Both movies, although different, pay tribute to Salsa music and dancing, that inspired the evolution of Hip Hop and Reggaeton in The Bronx and Puerto Rico, respectively. Both feature commentaries by highly respectable authorities and artists of the Salsa genre, as well as those of Hip Hop and Reggaeton genres. As I don’t know much about Hip Hop and Reggaeton, I won’t mention the notable people of those genres in the movies, but there a quite a few. I will mention some of the featured Salsa commentators and artists featured in the movies.
