Under the proposed plan, commonly known as the Merit Plan, a statewide committee composed of equal numbers of lawyers and laymen would be set up to recommend the three best-qualified candidates for any vacancies on the state's higher corts. The governor would have to appoint one of these candidates to fill the position. After two years, the apointed jurist would have to gain support from 55 percent of voters to retain his office. If supported, the judge would remain in office, subject to another vote of confidence every six years. Such a plan is far superior to the direct election of judges. It eliminates the guessing game by voters who are unable to make sound choices because of their unfamiliarity with the candidates. The Merit Plan has proven itself in 31 other states that have adopted numerous variations of the theme. Ohioans at long last have an alternative to selecting their higher court judges that will provide a means for improving our court system. Politics have no place in the courtroon. The Fin-N-Falcon Scuba Club may have "Scrabbled" its way into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing the longest underwater scrabble game in history. About 25 divers from the club participated in the 60-hour underwater Scrabble Marathon held in the University's Student Recreation Center's Cooper Pool. "It will be a while before we find out an official verificiation from Guinness," Robert Ensign, president of the Fin-N-Falcon Scuba Club, said but the real reason for the marathon was to earn money for the American Leukemia Society. A representative from Guinness Superlative limited in Enfield. England, said that she was not aware of a previous record in underwater Scrabble and because of a legal technicality, a first attempt record is not usually printed in the book.

THE DIVERS collected money pledges based on the total number of hours the team stayed underwater. Ensign said that so far the club has more than $800 in pledges but expects to have $1,000 when all pledge sheets are turned in. Ensign said the choice to hold the Scrabble Marathon was made by some divers while sitting around a campfire in Florida. Several games were con- sidered but Scrabble was chosen because no one had done it before and it's an easy game to play. Clancy J. Wolf, a graduate student in secondary education, organized the marathon and decided to donate the proceeds to the American Leukemia Society because a friend of his had died from the disease a few months earlier.
