Daily Information The Sports Notice Board, situated outside the Sports Office window (link foyer area), contains information about draws, results, team lists, future sports events and opportunities, cancellations and defaults. Students should check the notice board regularly as it is their responsibility to stay informed. In addition the daily notices are available on notice boards around the school and are placed on the school website at around 3pm each day for the next day. Parents can access these through the Parent Portal. A College Sport Wellington App is available. CSW runs much of the sport Onslow is involved in, plus the app also contains draws for both Netball Wellington & Wellington Hockey. It is freely available through both Ap- ple App & Google Play stores and gives everyone immediate up-to-date sports draw and result information.

Sporting Achievements During the course of the year there are a number of occasions where the school recognises and applauds the sporting achievements of its students. The Physical Education and Sports Departments often hear of such success but there are some students who reach representative status outside of the co-curricular sports pro- gramme that we aren’t aware of. Please tell us about these achievements by emailing the sports office [email protected]

Communication Students are encouraged to discuss any sports issues (such as defaults and deferrals) in a timely manner with the Sports Office as they have a responsibility to their own team members, the teams they compete against, and the competition organisers. Late advice of defaulted games incur a charge from tournament providers which must be paid by the team concerned.

5 General Information

Sports fees will be added to student accounts following registration and can be paid once they appear on your statement. Accounts can be viewed online through the Parent Portal and a statement will be emailed to parents. Once an account is received, please ensure payment is made within two weeks. Registration fees assist with the cost of equipment, uniform replacement, first aid, competition entry fees, compulsory officials fees, turf and facility hire charges, photocopying, reimbursement of coach/manager ex- penses, use of facilities and facility upkeep, some transport costs and administration. Additionally, students involved in exchanges and tournaments will pay associated fees and should expect to be involved in fundrais- ing activities to help reduce the costs of these tournaments to families. Please contact the school office if you need to discuss a payment plan or use the Payment Plan form in this booklet which can be returned to the sports office on the first day of school or soon after. Students are asked to think carefully about each sport and the level of commitment that will be required of them. 6 General Information

Winter & Summer Tournaments Teams or individuals may compete in various North Island or National Secondary Schools Tournaments or other events throughout the year. The two main tournament dates are: Summer Tournament Week 30th March - 3rd April 2020 Winter Tournament Week 31st August - 4th September 2020 Senior teams participating in these tournaments will be selected depending upon their level of achievement in local competition and on the expectation that they could gain selection to a national competition. If selected in more than one top team, students may only represent one code during Tournament Week. Team coaches and the Director of Sport must be advised of their decision by 15th May 2020. This may re- quire the student stepping down from one team in order to allow the tournament team to train together. NOTE: To participate in either of these tournaments, students will be required to pay extra costs for travel, accommodation, food and entry fees, these must be paid PRIOR the tournament commences or the student will be unable to attend. It is expected that students will be involved in fundraising.

Junior Triangular Exchange

Onslow competes in an annual exchange with Tawa and Newlands Colleges for the McDonald’s Cup. Junior teams (Year 9 and 10), are chosen for this event in the following codes: Football, Basketball, Netball, Rugby, Cross Country, Hockey (6-aside) and Badminton. The exchange is hosted by Onslow College every third year. The exchange will take place on Tuesday 5th May. Parents are welcome to attend the exchange which will be hosted by Newlands College in 2020.

CSW Tournaments

Throughout the year CSW runs one or two day tournaments for most sports that have a weekly competition (e.g. volleyball, netball, badminton etc). In most cases, these are for the top junior and senior teams. Teams will be contacted throughout the year if they are invited to such a tournament, and an extra fee for these tournaments may incur and added to your account.

7 General Information

Coaches and Managers—Always Wanted!

Teams will not be entered into competition without a Coach and a Manager. We are very grateful to all our volunteers as without them we would be unable to provide the sporting op- portunities that our students enjoy so much. With around 160 teams at Onslow College each year it is vital that we have parental and community involve- ment in coaching and managing teams. The Coach/Manager/Officials Registration & Contact Form in this document should be completed if you are available to assist with our sports programme. Please complete and return it to the Sports Office or scan and email to [email protected] Alternatively, contact the Sports Office directly. NOTE: All coaches and managers will be asked to complete a Police Vetting Form. These will be due before the sport commences.

Sports Team Photographs All sports teams will have the opportunity to have a team photograph taken at the College. The success of this opportunity relies on all team members being available, on time and dressed in their team uniform. Term 1 summer sport teams will need to arrange for uniform to be available on the day if they have loaned uniforms from the Sports Office. Photographs will be made available online in full resolution for all sports students to access with a username and password which will be issued by the school. Payment is covered by your sports fees, however hardcopy prints may be ordered directly from the photographers website at an additional cost OR an image file down- loaded and taken to a local lab for processing.

Onslow Sports Awards This is an annual event held to present Onslow Sport Achiever Awards and Trophies. The event is held in Term 4, and is for students who have participated in top sports teams or to a high level in other codes not provided at Onslow during the year, along with coaches, parents, members of the community and staff members. This is a free event and all students in top teams are expected to attend.

Sports Contracts Students in Onslow’s top sports team will be required to fill in the Sports Contract once they have been se- lected into the team. This contract is at the back of the booklet, as well as on the Onslow Sports Website.

General Information

Uniform Requirements

Uniform requirements are kept to a minimum but in all cases the uniform is non-negotiable and must be ad- hered to. Wearing sports uniform is a requirement of the sports bodies who provide the competitions our teams enter i.e. College Sport Wellington, Wellington Hockey Association and Wellington Netball Centre. Onslow College’s official sports colours are green and red.

Uniforms provided by Onslow College will be signed out to students at the time of issue. An annual loan fee of $20 per sport your student plays will be charged to the student’s account (where applicable), or $10 per term.

Uniform that is not returned will be charged to the student’s account at $150 per item. Uniforms will be collected at the end of the season by coaches/managers or can be returned to the Sports Office. Uniforms not provided by the school can, in most cases, be purchased from the Sports office. A price list for sports uniform is at the back of this information booklet. Payments should be made to the school office and the receipt brought to the Sports Office where the order will be filled. Uniform items cannot be charged to student accounts.

Details of the uniform items required to be purchased for each code are included with the individual code information on the following pages. All attempts are being made to standardise the uniform to our new ‘Koru’ design and to limit the number of items you will need to purchase. Any items you purchase should be able to be used for several years and several sports codes and PE classes.

If you have any questions or issues around obtaining the right uniform for any code, please contact the Sports Office as soon as possible.

Handball is an exciting team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goal- keeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. Goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "jumping" into it. The game is quite fast and includes body contact, as the defenders try to stop the attackers from approaching the goal. Handball has been an Olympic sport since 1972. Code convenor: Paul Teesdale-Spittle Season: All Year Orienteering combines running with navigational challenge. Courses are set for all levels of experience. Be- ginners' courses have simple navigation, generally using tracks. More advanced courses require runners to make decisions about how to navigate quickly and accurately around an off track course.

Orienteering at its top level is a fast and physical sport, but is just as enjoyable at a more sedate pace. Some team members will run every event fast and hard, others will walk around the course, enjoying the time out- side

Training: Training sessions are held on most weekends without a local event.

Competition: Events run all through the year and are generally held on Sunday mornings, usually starting after 11am. 15th March Competition begins 22nd—24th April North Island Secondary School Championships 16th - 18th July National Secondary School Championships

Cost: $10.00 administration fee plus there is a charge for each event, typically between $5 and $12 to cover the cost of map printing and the event timing equipment.

Parent Help Required: Please indicate your availability on the Coaches/Managers/Officials Registration & Contact Form on the website. It would be great to get parents involved with anything from transporting stu- dents to help with course preparation.

Code Convenor: Tina Manker Season: Summer The Onslow College Rowing Club (OCRC) is the provider of College representative rowing within the Onslow College community and has a well developed programme with experienced coaches and a well run com- mittee and parent group. We are affiliated to the Wellington Rowing Club (WRC). Students row for the WRC in local regattas and represent Onslow College in the championship regattas at Lake Karapiro and other sec- ondary school regattas, including the Maadi Cup (NZSS Rowing Champs).

The season begins with a Learn to Row programme starting in August followed by a camp at the end of Term 3 to identify students with the right drive and potential and then continues over the summer holidays until March of the following year.

Rowing requires some time commitment. Novice squads train 4-5 times per week from Oct to Dec. Up to 7 trainings a week are likely near the end of the season as crews build for championship regattas. It is unrealis- tic to expect that you will be able to play another major sport during Term 4 and Term 1 of the following year if you choose to row.

A full information evening in August will provide students and parents with a comprehensive picture of what is involved.

Trainings: Onslow College, Wellington Rowing Club, Frank Kitts Park, Lagoon and other venues.

Venues: Wellington Harbour, Wanganui River, Wairarapa, Lake Karapiro.

Uniform: Full information will be given at the pre-season meeting.

Costs: Students chosen as novice rowers after the ‘Learn to Row’ camp should expect costs of around $2800 (excluding Maadi) for the full season. These costs include the Learn to Row programme and the LTR camp as well as all club, coaching and uniform fees and participa tion at the summer camp, at least three away regattas as well as local regattas and other mini camps. Actual costs may vary depending on the individual rower’s participation in all events, but are indicative of a typical season. Costs are charged on a per event basis.

$10.00 Administration fee will be charged to your account once squads are confirmed in September.

Rowing is an expensive sport and fundraising opportunities are provided to assist students and their families.

Parent help required: Rowing is very much a family affair with everyone expected to pitch in and help. Please be prepared to take on some responsibility such as parent help at camps and regattas, transport, tow- ing coach boats, driving the boat trailer and boat loading/maintenance.
