Dear Mrs. Hunter,

Thank you for your 23 May 1996 letter. advising that Thomas Atkinson was credited with Patriotic Service because he paid the supply tax in 1781 in Washington Co., P A.

In September 1995 I published our family's genealogy in a book entitled Atkinson Ancestors and Allied Families in which I stated that from a careful study of all known records it was impossible to say for certain that "our" Thomas Atkinson matched up with any National Archives records. of military service for people with names close to the same spelling.

For this reason it was reassuring to get your letter confirming that the /'~. two "leading candidates" for such a match up were definitely not "our" Thomas. It may be that some of your DAR members would be unhappy with such news, but their acceptance was long ago, apparently before proofs became more stringent.

The best evidence I could fmd about Thomas Atkinson's military service was as a part of the Westmoreland Co., PA militia. That seemed both consistent and believable based on his age at the time. His son, also named Thomas, was with the ill-fated Lochry expedition in 1781, but survived that as well as 2 -3 years of indian captivity. H_g_ should be in the DAR's Patriot Index!

lam enclosing a promotional sheet describing my book (from the standpoint of potential purchasers with strong Virginia backgrounds). The Atkinson family narrative ( one of 18 separate narratives in the book) is the major family documented and consists of 59 of the 263pp. Obviously, I'd be especially pleased if the DAR Library chose to order a copy. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness in writing to me. '~ Robert W. Atkinson ~afinnal ~nriefJJ ~aug4fers nf f4e ~eriran ~ettnlufinn Mrs. Charles Keil Kemper, President General

DearMr. Atkinson, While working on a supplemental using Thomas Atkinson as a Patriot Ancestor, I reviewed your letter on the service and birth date of this man.· We agree that the military service with the 1st Virginia State Regiment was not correct. The man with this unit was with Capt. Charles Ewell. Capt. Ewell's Company was raised in Prince William County VA. This Thomas Atkinson (with 1st VA) enlisted March 1, 1777, and served to mid-1780. The man with the 3rd and 7th Virginia Regiment died June 28, 1778. The above two histories were found in the Revolutionary War Service Records available at the National Archives or here on microfilm. We have credited this man with Patriotic Service because he paid the supply tax in 1781 in Amwell Township, Washington Co. PA. (Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, Volume 22, page 701) We have changed his birth date to circa 1728. Besides Thomas Atkinson on the tax list above are. George Atkinson, Charles Crecraft, William Elliott as payers and a Thomas Atkinson and William Atkinson as single men. We are assuming the older boys were born in the 1750's and thus the circa 1728 birth date. Quite frankly, we don't have any proofthat the. first two children were born 1744 and 1748. Thank you for your interest in correcting our records.

Sincerely,

(Mrs) Darlene Hunter Assistant Corrections Genealogist Code 1A

In 1794 or 5 Thomas Atkinson sold their 600 acres in Pa. and moved by flatboat to Springfield Church, Maysville, Bath Co., Ky. and purchased 200 acres on Flat Creek. Note that Bath Co. was part of Clark Co. when Thomas moved there. He served in the Revolutionary War and was in Col. Archibald Lochry's batttalion of Pa. Militia in 1781. Refund to Aug 24,1781 as a prisoner. Thomas in his youth was a woodsman, fond of the chase, and became an expert indian spy and hunter. He and his brother William were indian scouts with Wetzel, Brady and others. Thomas was taken prisoner in the campaign of Col. Morgan in 1776 or 8. They were going down the river in bateaux when the river was low. The indians waded out into the river on shoals and captured them. Thomas was a man some 5 ft. 9in. in height, stout build weighing 180 to 190 pounds. He was chosen prisoner by Big Pine, a chief of the Wyandottes, and kept in Northeastern Ohio. After serving some eight months awaiting a chance to escape, he got the agur so bad that he could not attempt it and so remained two years and eight months. He and another man and three women started walking to Fort Pitt in the winter time. The first night it snowed. The second night it froze a crust on top of the snow. They had to strip hickory bark off the trees and tie on their legs to protect them. When they got to the Beaver River, they made a raft and placed the women and guns on the raft and the two men waded and pushed the raft across. When they came to the Allegheny river they waved to the soldiers at Fort Pitt and they came across and got them. They were without food most of the trip. See History of Greenup Co., Ky. RICHARD SARGENT S # 23889 or 238899 01 erbatum transcription) Revolutionary War Pension

State ofPennsylvania Greene County

On this 11th day of September, 1832, personally appeared in open court, before the Judges or Justices of the Court Common Pleas of Greene County now sitting, Richard Sargeant, a resident of Morris Township in Washington County in the State of Pennsylvania, aged seventy two years, who being duly sworn according to law, on his oath makes the following statement or declaration in order to obtain the benefits ofthe Act of Congress, proposed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he volunteered in the year 1778, thinks about the first of Sept. of that year to serve in what is termed Mcintosh' Campaign, he joined Capt. James Brunton's Company at Washington in Washington County, Penna. From whence he was marched to (Mentine's?) Lake below Pittsburg where he joined Mcintosh' Army where he remained about a week, from thence he was marched to the mouth of the big Beaver where entered a fort which is called Fort Mcintosh. His company was joined to a regiment commanded by Col. John Evans. After staying some time at Big Beaver, part of the forces including his company and regiment was marched to Tuscaroaring river where another fort was entered called Fort Laurens. We remained here some time. When we got starved out we were marched back to Fort Mcintosh where my company was discharged. I volunteered to serve six months until sworn discharged .. I cannot tell exactly when I was discharged but I know I was four months and nineteen days in this campaign. I received no written discharge. There were two regiments of Continental troops in this campaign. Viz. The 8th Penna Regiment commanded by Col. Broadhead & the 13 111 Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Gibson. I also knew Captain Bell of the Virginia Regiment, Col. Crawford, Col. Morrow of Virginia, Col. Baker and Col. --- of the Militia.

I also served a tour as a volunteer of six months under Captain George Myers, of Washington County, in guarding the frontier against the Indians. We were stationed for five months of this term at Lindley Fort on Ten Mile Creek in Washington County. This company was raised under the authority of Col. Daniel McFarland the County Lieutenant. The last month of this tour was served at Jackson's Fort in now Greene County Penna. under Lieut. Nailor. Whether I was with others ordered by Capt. Myers I cannot tell what year this took place but think it was the year after I returned from Mcintosh' Campaign. This was a tour of arduous duty. We were constantly employed in scouring the country often and guarding the settlements against the incursions of the savages. I received no discharge from my captain from this tour. I also served a tour of one month under Sargeant John Lindley in scouting after the Indians on the waters ofTen Mile in Washington County. I cannot say any thing about the Country through which we marched in Mcintosh' Campaign. The country has (three rivers?) & is called the Indian Country. While stationed at Lindley Fort we watched the streams ofTen Mile, Wheeling and Buffalo in now Washington and Greene Counties. I was born in Caran County, Ireland on Christmas, 1760. Was eight years old when brought to America, lived some time in Baltimore County, Maryland. Came to where I now live in the fall before Dunsmore's War. He truly relinquishes many Claims being Claims whatever to a pension except those present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any other State. He names the following persons in his neighborhood to whom he is known who can testify to his character for his honesty and those knowing of his service as a soldier of the Revolution. Viz. Samuel England, James Templeton, James Reed, Rev. Jacob Lindley and James Carroll. Sworn & subscribed September 11th 1832 in open Court RICHARD SARGANT Attest Wm.J.Hays

James Leaks Esq. Being duly sworn on his oath doth say that he is well acquainted with Richard Sargant who has signed the written declaration. That he well knows he served in Mcfntosh' Campaign as stated in this written declaration, as he served in the same Company and Regiment with this deponent. That he truly believes he served in the Indian wars as further stated in said declaration. James Leaks Sworn & subscribed in open Court, Sept. 11th 1832

Attest Wm. J. Hays

And the said Court do truly declare their opinion after the investigation of the matter and after ... the interogations ... by the main deponent and it further appears to them that James Leaks whose name is signed to the above affixant is a man of credit and whose statement is reliable to the fullest extent.

1/J. William J. Hays, Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of Greene County, do hereby certify that the foregoing contains the original proceedings of the said Court in the matter of the application of Richard Sargeant for a pension. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal of Office this 11th day of September 183 2 Wm.J.Hays Code 1 GA

REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATION OF WILLIAM LEE

New Lisbon, April 6111 1818

I, William Lee ofthe County of Columbiana and the State of Ohio, having served my Country in the capacity of a non commissioned officer During the Revolutionary War. I in 1776 entered as a Volunteer into a Company raised in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. We chose Rob Cluggage for our Captian, Jn. Holady for our Lieut., and our Ensign, I do not recollect any more and we marched from thence to Cambridge in the vicinity of Boston from thence joined the 1st Regiment of Pennsylvania commanded by then Col. Thompson, Lieut. Col. Hand and Major McGaw being encampt on far prospect hill before Boston siege. I served that year as a Corporal and in March 1776 our Regiment received orders to march for New York, But being unwell was left behind in the Hospital. But in two weeks I got able to follow the Regt. where I found them encampt in west end of Long Island where we staid till our year was up and on that day the British fleet arrived and cast Anchor in Sandy Hook Bay. Col. Hand then spoke to us and desired us to wait a few days longer to see what the British had a mind to do. And in a day or two they weght (sic- weighed) Anchor and dropt throw (through) the Narrows and landed on Staten Island then the Col. gave us our discharge and paid us off. I then made my way to the Westward ofPennsylvania and on my way in the vicinity of Chambersburg I delt (dealt) with a Certain Tho. Cook (?) who had got a Commission as first Lieut. in a Company to be raised in Bedford County and by Capt. Andrew Mann and for to join the eighth Regt. (Commanded by Col. Enaas (Enos) McCoy, Lt. Col. Geo. Wilson and Major Rich. Butten) by whom I inlisted (enlisted) again and he promised me I should be Sergeant in the Company and desired me after I had arranged my Business I would go to Bedford and there take charge of a Number of Recruits that he had there ....According to his Orders I when (went) up to Bedford and there staid (stayed) till Capt. Mann and the rest of the Company .....(arrived?) there were Lt. Cook introduced to Capt. Mann and told him that he had enlisted me for a Sergt. in his Company we took up the line of march and attempt to join the Regt. then lying at the Hatanian (Raratan?) where the (they) received orders to make a Return of his Company when done he Returned me as first Corpl. Of the Company of which I declined serving as such and entered the Ranks as a private after this Lt. Crawford our second Lt. came and advised me to go and make my Complaint to Col. Wilson how Capt. Mann had served me I did. Accordingly he sent me to tell ye Capt. To come to him and obey his orders and fetcht the Capt. Forward Who received a Severe Reprimand from the Col., who then ordered me to be first Sergt. in Capt Mann's Company. I remained in that office till the first of April, 1777 when Major Butten (Butler?) after the Decease of the two Colonels had the Sole Command had me appointed a Quartermaster Sergt. of the 1st Regt. I remained in that Office till the opening of the Campaign and then I was made a Sergt. Major and the ensuing Winter we Lay at the Valley Forge and Col. Daniel Broadhead who than was our Col. and first Col. of the 2nd Brigade of Genl. Wayne's Division had me appointed Forage Master of the Brigade.

I continued that Office till May 1778 when the Col Received orders to march his Regt. To Fort Pitt and I resigned my appointment as Forage Master to that Brigade as was reappointed as Forage Master to the Detachment Under his Command I continued as such until the year of 1780 so that in all I was in the Forage Department about two years and a half Hence I Retired to the Regt. that lay Fort Pitt and served as Sergt. Major till Peace was Proclaimed in the year 1783. And Whereas I am yet a resident citizen of the United States aged seventy one years, who by a reverse of fortune have become in Revolutionary Pension Application - William Lee Page2 reduced circumstances in life and do stand in need of assistance of my country.

Thomas Marsh had three tracts of land. One was called "Marsh's Ridge" in the Valley of Jehosaphat in Baltimore County on the Great Gunpowder River now above Lock Raven reservoir. The second was called "Charle's Neighbor" and located in Hartford County, Md.. The third was called "Eagles Nest". The "Eagles Nest" as shown on historical deeds, is located at Jarrettsville Road, Dulany Valley, five miles north ofTowson, Md. In 1987 it was owned by Clifford Shaw. The patent was granted by Lord Baltimore to Richard Smith Jr. of Calvert County on Aug 4 or 10, 1684 for 2,500 acres ofland and called the Valley of Jehosaphat. It was sold to General Dulany who gave it to his son Walter. During the Revolutionary War it was seized from Dulany and sold to Thomas Marsh, Joshua Marsh and Mr. Fitzhugh in 1784. Two small stone buildings with pyramidal roofs flank the slave quarters and the kitchen garden wall heavily buttressed. The wall and shoke house were used as a fort for settlers when Indians were in the valley. The original part of this house was built in 1684 and forms a wing of the house as it exists in 1987. Parts of the fifteen room house was damaged by fire in 1790 and have been restored. When J. Marsh Matthews inherited the land in 1911 there were 1200 acres. He was interested in horticulture. He planted many varieties of holly around the house and bodering the stone wall is a holly hedge 200 feet long. This place was also called "Marshmont". John died May 18,1806. Thomas is listed as having taken the oath of allegiance in Revolutionary Patriots of Baltimore Town and County. Code3AEB
