  • Nielsen Music Year-End Report Canada 2016
NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

Staples The Lemons in Lemonade Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album, Lemonade, is an artistic and conceptual triumph. It is filled with cultural references from powerhouse literature like Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, Morrison’s The Bluest Eye and Sula, Butler’s Kindred, and the poetry of newcomer Warsan Shire.1 It presents a tapestry of journey method through iterations of consciousness and experiences that are tied to a feminine and Black feminist tradition/s. Each of the album’s eleven chapters, from “Intuition” to “Redemption,” contains critical expressions and creative embodiments of a human predicament assigned to women, to Black women in particular: t/Terror in love.

  • BTS Love Yourself: Tear Throughout the Past Year Or So, K-Pop Group; BTS Has Been Blown up Like Crazy
BTS Love Yourself: Tear Throughout the past year or so, K-Pop group; BTS has been blown up like crazy. If you haven’t heard their name at least once, then I’m assuming you don’t keep up with the internet much. BTS has had so much worldwide success over the past year, that it’s hard to believe that they started off by advertising themselves with posters on the streets just 5 years ago. Their stage presence makes fans go wild, and have an amazing global following. They soon had became the most successful K-Pop act in U.S. history. Members from left to right: J-Hope, Jungkook, V (Taehyung), Jin, RM, Suga, Jimin If you are not familiar with K-Pop already, it is a genre of music that has originated in Korea. Korean Pop music has been popular internationally for a good few years, it’s not limited to just people in Korea. Every fan has their reason for liking the genre, maybe it’s the language, the sound, the style, or all of those things. Some people misinterpret fans as being ‘Koreaboos,’ which is internet slang for people who appropriate Korean culture and fetishize Koreans. Not all K-Pop fans are like that, many international fans respect Korean culture, and many are in fact against this kind of behaviour. Biographyoooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooo As for BTS fans, ARMY’s is the official fandom name, every K-Pop group or artist comes up with a name for their fans. BTS originally stood for ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts,’ however throughout the years they have become comfortable with it standing for ‘Beyond The Scene.’ They debuted in 2013 along with their first album ‘2 Kool 4 Skool,’ simultaneously with the lead single in it, ‘No More Dream.’ The album was a big hit as it sold over 145,000 copies.

  • From Bandannas to Berets: a Critical Analysis of Beyoncé's “Formation” Music Video by Kesha Shalyn James a Thesis Submit
From Bandannas to Berets: A Critical Analysis of Beyoncé’s “Formation” Music Video by Kesha Shalyn James A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Communication Auburn, Alabama August 5, 2017 Keywords: Beyoncé, Formation, Black women, Black music, Black culture, media representations Copyright 2017 by Kesha Shalyn James Approved by Susan L. Brinson, Chair, Professor of Communication & Journalism George Plasketes, Professor of Communication & Journalism Kevin Smith, Associate Professor of Communication & Journalism Abstract The release of Beyoncé’s “Formation” music video as well as her debut performance of the song at the 2016 Super Bowl has incited debate and controversy across the United States. While some feel empowered and prideful, others are angered and outraged by the lyrical and visual messages Beyoncé communicates in this mediated text. Applying a critical/cultural studies perspective lens, this study explains how Beyoncé challenges the sexist and racist dominant ideology in the United States. Critically analyzing the visual and lyrical composition of “Formation,” this analysis interrogates the messages of both race and gender as well as the representation of Black Women. The findings indicate a direct challenge to white androcentric power as the visuals and lyrics re-appropriate stereotypical images of Black Women, thus demonstrating Black Women’s power and dominance in society. The implications of explaining the ways in which Beyoncé communicates what and how it means to be a Black Woman in “Formation” inform and explain the social, political, and economic reality of Black Women in the United States today, as mediated texts re-present everyday reality.
