We seemed to be on the go much of the time. No doubt our relatives and friends must have wondered how this was all financed. Well, so did we, kind of, but we’ll get to that in due time. By the time we reached September, 2000, we were hardly settled in Grand Rapids any more; it was one trip after another. If we had been able to look at it all ahead of time, we would have shaken our heads in disbelief, if not outright denial. We would never be able to afford all that travel. Well, somehow we did. It is a story of God’s provisions that has amazed us throughout our post-Nigeria years. Please understand that this volume assumes you have read Volume 4, for there will be some references to events recorded there. I am not about to repeat what’s there. This one is long enough as is! These travel chapters are not just travelogues; they contain stories about interesting people, our reactions to situations met on these journeys and reflections evoked by them. At the same time, if you don’t enjoy travel stories, then you could simply skip them. We personally have deeply enjoyed our various travels, both in North America as well as to the other continents. As much as we have traveled, we remain curious about and interested in so many places not yet experienced. In fact, during in 2013 we have been discussing China. China has always fascinated me. The question always is: what would be the purpose of such a journey? Can we afford it? And, if so, is it a responsible or stewardly expense? By early summer, we had decided with regret to drop China. With recent changes in our financial situation we don’t tell you about, we needed to sit more tight. Lutjegast—Down Memory Lane (1997) It was probably fitting that the first trip abroad in my new life was a May 1997 pilgrimage to Lutjegast for the centenary celebration of the Christian school which most of the Boer siblings had attended. It was a personal journey down memory lane. You’ve read all about my years there in Chapter 2. The four sisters had all agreed to go. I had no intentions, not with our unstable income. Suddenly, Fran came home one day with return tickets for me to also attend the event. I was totally taken by surprise and moved to the core at this gesture of sacrificial love for me in her situation. Of course, I gratefully accepted. 10 We decided to surprise my sisters by meeting them in Lutjegast. Somehow, they had gotten wind of something but were not sure. The surprise was dulled.

  • Venerable Alfred Pampalon, C.Ss.R. (1867–1896)
    Venerable Alfred Pampalon, C.Ss.R. (1867–1896) Alfred Pampalon was born on November 24, 1867, in Lévis (Quebec), the ninth of twelve children. His father was a builder and contractor, who worked building churches. After attending primary school for two years, Alfred enters the Collège de Lévis, in 1876, where he takes courses in business. Five years later, after an illness, he begins classical studies in order to become a priest. Shortly before his sixth year, in 1885, he contracts pneumonia. They thought he was going to die. Following his recovery, that was attributed to the intercession of Saint Anne, Alfred sets out on a pilgrimage, by foot, to the shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré to give thanks for his healing. Here, on this occasion, he asks to enter the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer of which his brother was already a member. He is accepted and in July 1886 he sails off for the Redemptorist novitiate in Saint-Trond, Belgium. On September 8, 1887, he takes his perpetual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Given the precarious state of his health, the superiors had been reluctant to receive him into the community, but his exemplary piety outweighed all objection. After completing his studies in Philosophy and Theology, he is ordained priest on October 4, 1892. The following year, on August 31, he is appointed to the monastery in Mons, where he carries out various duties, replacing absent priests or on occasion accompanying those who go to preach in neighboring parishes. From April to September 1894 he undertakes a second novitiate at Beau Plateau, which among the Redemptorists served as a preparation for conducting missions and parish retreats.

    Sedimentology and chemostratigraphy of Carboniferous red beds in the western Moncton Basin, Sussex area, New Brunswick, Canada: possible evidence for a middle Mabou Group unconformity M. M. Keighley* Department of Earth Sciences, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, New Brunswick E3B 5A3, Canada *Corresponding author <keig@unb.ca> Date received: 30 November 2017 ¶ Date accepted: 12 July 2018 ABSTRACT The area around Penobsquis, east of Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, is an important location of natural resources for the province. The McCully gas field produces from strata of the Mississippian Horton Group whereas younger strata of the Windsor Group are host to major potash and rocksalt deposits. Overlying these units are over 1 km of poorly understood red beds currently assigned to the Mississippian Mabou Group. To date, this latter unit lacks significant marker beds and has had no useful biostratigraphic recovery, despite recent extraction of close to 5 km of drill core. Research on this core broadly identifies siltstone and sandstone at the base of the Mabou Group that gradually coarsen up into conglomerate. The succession is considered the result of alluvial-fan progradation from the northeast. Within this succession, in several of the cores, is a single interval of localized, horizontally laminated to cross-stratified, bluish-grey sandstone, containing carbonaceous plant fragments and siltstone intraclasts. To assess the importance of this interval in the context of the red bed succession, a total of 131 samples of core from three boreholes have been analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma and spectroscopic techniques to determine chemostratigraphy. Study of various elemental ratios can delineate two packages, one that corresponds to the grey interval and overlying red beds, and the other to the underlying red beds.

ALPHONSUS Archconfraternity of The confraternity, whose aim is to propagate devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, was erected on 25th May 1871 in the church of Sant'Alfonso, Rome, by Cardinal Costantino Patrizi, Vicar General of Rome. The miraculous picture had been exposed for veneration in the same church some five years earlier. Pius IX conferred the dignity of archconfraternity on 31st August 1876. Greenspond is one of the oldest continuously inhabited outports in Newfoundland. In 1698 Greenspondwas inhabited by 13 men, women and children. By 1810, the population was 600 and by 1901 the population had risen to 1, 726. Greenspond was one of the major settlements in Newfoundland.
