The United States bombing of the countryside continued (now publicly) and increased from 1970 to August 1973. when Congress imposed a halt. Nearly half of the US bom bing tonnage was dropped in the last six months. The total was 540,000 tons. Rural Cambodia was destroyed, and 'Democratic Kampuchea' rose in its ashes.
