Wright Angles: A DIALOGUE 2017 A LANDMARK YEAR

From the President & CEO

Celebration of the 150th anniversary of ’s birth resets the lens of history, persuading us to reconsider his artistic achievement on the international stage of modernism. As personal remembrances of his contemporaries fade, the work endures and is elevated in estimation and depth of meaning. This year’s schedule of programs at the Trust includes enhanced returning events as well as new offerings. The Wright Plus 150 Housewalk embraces the immediate neighborhood encircling Wright’s Studio, the incubator of his ideas. Here he created the first uniquely American Sutra library, Chion-in Temple, Kyoto and here it remains, exquisitely preserved along Frank Lloyd Wright, 1905 the surrounding tree-lined streets. Wright 150 Lecture and Dinner — June 8

Lecture: The Art of Life: Frank Lloyd Wright and the ‘Organic’ Nature of Japanese Art Lecture by Kevin Nute, author of Frank Lloyd Wright and Japan | Partnership with Art Institute of Chicago 6 pm | Fullerton Hall, Art Institute of Chicago | 111 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago

Despite Frank Lloyd Wright’s frequent references to his ‘debt’ to Japanese art, its relationship to his own work remained largely a mystery throughout his long career. It had never been explained, for example, how in a matter of little more than a decade, this engineering student from rural had become an internationally respected connoisseur of Japanese woodblock prints, nor what such an obscure two-dimensional art form could possibly have to do with revolutionizing modern Western architecture. As this talk will demonstrate, a coincidental personal connection at a critical moment in Wright’s early career can effectively answer both of these questions.

Kevin Nute is the author of Place, Time and Being in Japanese Architecture; John Yeon and the Landscape Arts of China and Japan; Vital: Using the Weather to Bring Buildings and Sustainability to Life; and Frank Lloyd Wright and Japan, which won the International Architectural Monograph Award from the American Institute of Architects.

Page 11 STUDIO CARRIAGE STOP HISTORICALLY RESTORED

On the parkway directly in front of the Oak Park Studio, the welcoming limestone and brick landscaping served as a carriage stop until modes of transportation changed and horses no longer had to be tethered while client meetings took place. During the Home and Studio restoration in the ‘70s and ‘80s, funding constraints permitted what was considered a temporary installation in concrete of the carriage stop. This past summer and fall, the carriage stop and planters were restored to their 1909 appearance in limestone and brick, matching the original material used when Wright’s Studio was at the height of success.

Wright altered the Studio entry several times between 1898 and 1909. The parkway also evolved over time. By 1909 limestone curbs enclosed ground- level planters and the carriage stop blocks were built up into brick piers with limestone caps. That is the parkway landscaping we see today, thanks to the 2016 restoration. Construction was reinforced with a concrete foundation system to extend its life. This spring, historically appropriate perennials will fill the planters.

A GREAT YEAR TO JOIN THE TRUST FAMILY Become a volunteer interpreter and lead tours at Trust sites

Volunteers are the Trust’s public ambassadors at our five Wright sites. As tour guides, they interpret our world-class historic sites and their neighborhoods for an international audience. Their talents help ensure that Wright’s vision and legacy inspire the public.

Join our volunteer ranks this spring and cultivate long-lasting relationships while you receive ongoing education and training on topics related to history, design and Frank Lloyd Wright. Training for Robie House interpreters starts March 7; Home and Studio interpreter training starts April 18.
